Been following it since they announced it. Looking forward to playing it, past that awful Devil May Cry reboot Ninja Theory has dished out some great little gems.

I won't be able to play this game due to the protagonists accent. It completely breaks immersion for me, it's not credible. Senua is a member of a Celtic tribe from northern Scotland known as the Picts. The game is set around the time of the Viking raids on the island of Orkney. So why would this Celtic warrior from the north of Scotland sound like an southern Anglo-Saxon? Why would she sound like the very English, very posh/privileged Lara Croft? Obviously an 8-10th century Pict warrior should have a generic, anonymous, middle class southern English accent and use received pronunciation. This anglification is an insult to people of Celtic heritage/identity everywhere. Not only is it not credible, it's pretty damned offensive. Well, what else would she sound like? The Scotti were a Gaelic speaking group from northern Ireland that largely subsumed the Brittonic speaking Picts, whose language died off, so would it make sense for her to sound Scottish? A closer approximation might have been to have a welsh or cornish actress do the voice, that would at least be the right branch of the Celtic language family.

A closer approximation might have been to have a welsh or cornish actress do the voice, that would at least be the right branch of the Celtic language family. Any celtic accent would be more appropriate, the words disappear in the mists of time but cadences, timbre and the general tone tend to linger and influence decendants and successor communiities. She certainly wouldn't sound like somebody from the south of England using rp. What I don't understand is this, if they were going to use an English (RP) voice why didn't they simply make the character English. It's a perfectly credible and viable alternative at this time in history. At this time the protagonist could easily be an Angle from the Kingdom of Northumbria circa Lindisfarne attacks and later invasions. Make her an Northumbrian and there wouldn't be a problem.

Well, accents change over time too. A linguistics professor I had in college told me about an interesting study being done regarding Shakespeare's works original pronunciation that apparently indicated American and Irish english dialects retain older pronunciation patterns now lost in most of England. But I take your point. Ninja theory is based in England, so I suspect they just thoughtlessly hired English actors. Or they're thoughtlessly perpetuating that unfortunate habit developed in American cinema of giving all non-modern characters English accents, originally because American accents would sound too "modern" to American audiences (rather ironically if that study is accurate)

BTW why do all Roman Patricians in movies have the accent of an English gentleman, Orcs are Cockneys and Dwarves are Scots in LOTR?

BTW why do all Roman Patricians in movies have the accent of an English gentleman? Because, colonial rubes that they are, American movie makers think the best way to get across that a character is aristocratic is to give them a posh English accent

Been playing this and really enjoying it so far. Different can be refreshing when most games seem to be the same old over and over.

Mind blowing. I'm speechless. Masterpiece. Took me around 8 hours to finish it and I enjoyed every second. (That's around 29.000 seconds. )

Congrats to Ninja Theory on Hellblade winning Games For Impact, Best Audio Design and Best Performance for Melina Juergens at The Game Awards! Very well-deserved. It's an amazing game unlike any I've played before. I was so impressed by Melina Juergens, especially considering she has never done any acting before.

I worked for years in Melina Jürgens's home town, Paderborn. According to an interview in a German magazine, she worked as a video editor at Ninja Theory for five years. When the original actress for Senua quit, she was asked to help out with testing a few scenes... which she did so well that she got the role. She immediately signed up for fitness training so she could also do the motion capture for her character. Melina Jürgens has suffered from anxiety and said playing Senua was like a journey into her inner self. Must get that game.

I remember the times back then we'd visit the town and tour the clubs and pubs. Eventually there'd be a group of Brit soldiers getting loud. I've literally never seen MP react so swiftly. I didn't even see them coming. Were they already there? In the shadows? How the hell did they manage to sort out their folk from the rest? It was over in no time. Brutal immediate reaction. We were impressed.

It's on sale again on Steam I think. Yes it is. It looks good but psychological stuff isn't my cup of tea; I already know the ending.

Sorry for the necro, but I just wanted to go on record that I can no longer say I hate horror games. I guess I have to say I hate jump-scare games instead, because Hellblade had me on the edge of my seat the whole time, but in a good way.
And what's with all the, "It's just another boring walking simulator," criticism I'm seeing on other boards? Did these people not wear headphones like the game tells you to? I mean, okay, I get that for people who don't like visual puzzles, there's a lot of visual puzzles, but a walking simulator? C'mon. I'm just glad I played the game all the way through before looking at the game boards -- it's infuriating to think of all the people being influenced not to play the game because it's "boring".
And here's a really weird thing I discovered: Easy difficulty is actually harder than Auto! I couldn't understand why so many people were complaining about combat being so easy, when I was getting my ass kicked routinely on Easy. Well, I switched to Auto, which is the default, and I see what they mean. How can the default setting be easier than Easy?
