But you could always do that. The only time you needed to access the power wheel is if you wanted to use more than 3 powers for Shepard, or 1 apiece for the squaddies. You still have to pause and bring up a wheel to use more than 3 powers - except now it's a complete profile change instead of simply selecting the power you want to use. Nah, profiles (favourites) are just for changing gameplay style a bit. That is how I think of it anyway. It is like a "cheap" way to respec when you have a lot of abilities or a way change your playstyle a bit without having to respec. Mostly cos it's tied to 3 abilities with non interrupting play. Not really viable to change on the go due to the cooldown, otherwise I'd agree with you.
If you could change to 4 different "styles" of abilities, that is better than 5. Also some of the "profiles" like combat drone (the one about you) and sentinel armor were an ability before, not they are a passive. So in some cases it's like 4 abilities at times you have now, depending. Previously you have what, an ammo power or two, medigel and maybe something else? so that is 3-4 right there.
Not a fan of a few round consumable "ammo powers" though.
My point is that people who wanted fast, smooth, pause-free combat have always had that available. In MET, you could map your 3 favorite powers plus 1 apiece for squadmates to the controller as you wished. You only needed to pause if you wanted to use medi-gel or some other power that wasn't mapped. As for ammo powers, you could establish them at the beginning of a mission, and didn't need to deal with them again unless you wanted to change something. The profile system does offer a flexibility that a strict class system does not have, but I preferred the class system for reasons I already specified - and I really miss the power wheel and its attendant mini-map.

I don't like on the principle profiles to pick and choose freely as I like to roleplay a specific character so in my soldier playthrough I ended up investing in the combat powers only. I'm not against profiles as they stand because I can simply ignore this possibility and play like a strict class as it was in the older ME BUT what irks me is that they took away the companions powers from my control.
I generally liked to pick squadmates that complemented my powers so when I'm a soldier I used the biotic and tech squadmates powers. Now I can't control their powers and it's kinda irritating. If they give me back control over their powers I have no problem with the profiles system.
Playing as a strict class enhanced the replayability for me because in other playthrough I'd pick a different class and consequently use different squadmates to complement a different playstyle.
