Well, I watched the video, and it does look really cool. In my opinion, it still reminds of the Mass Effect trilogy. There were definitely spoilers, though, so I don't recommend watching the video. I put the info from the video under a spoiler tag for those who are interested in weapons, skills and abilities. If you don't want to spoil yourself at all about how the combat works, don't read it. There are no screenshots, and all the info is only about Ryder. Andromeda's action is built around fluid, fast-paced third person combat. Our combat offers amazing freedom of movement with the use of a jump jet that allows you to jump, evade, and even hover while you're fighting. You'll also notice a new, dynamic cover system that allows you to seamlessly use almost anything, including your own vehicle, for cover. All this freedom allows you to approach the battle in a way that suits your gameplay style.
Weapons Let's take a closer look at our weapons. In Mass Effect: Andromeda, there are four categories of guns: pistols, shotguns, and sniper- and assault rifles, plus a range of melee weapons for up-close combat. All guns are available to every player. There are no class restrictions. So if you decide you want to try something new, it's as easy as switching your loadout.
Guns and gear in Andromeda fall into three technology types based on where the tech comes from. Milky Way weapons typically use physical projectile ammunition that's similar to the types of weapons you might be familiar with from our original games, with some advancements, of course. These are high-impact projectile based guns. They're great against non-shielded targets, but require to keep an eye on your ammo.
[...] weapons typically use beams, have a high rate of fire, and are extremely accurate. They use the overheat system and don't rely on ammo, so you'll never run out of ammo, but you'll have to wait for your gun to cool down from time to time.
[...] weapons are technology from civilizations that live in the Helios Cluster of Andromeda. They're generally plasma based, which means they're lower speed, the benefit from heat-seeking technology, while some are charged-based; the longer you charge before releasing, the harder they hit.
Melee weapons vary in both damage and speed. Our hitting hammers do maximum damage. Our lightning fast shivs or swords allow you to get in and out of harm's way with maximum speed and precision.
Skills and Abilities In addition to weapons you can also develop skills and abilities. Like the weapons, there are no restrictions on what skills you can choose. And each of the three main categories is designed to facilitate a certain style of play.
Combat skills are great if you want to focus on weapons, gear, and making your character the ultimate soldier. These skills focus on improving weapon damage and accuracy, as well as giving you the ability to use flak cannons, grenades, mines, and more.
Tech skills allow you to equip your Pathfinder with more experimental weaponry, or focus on strategic improvements for you and your squad. Cryo Beam and Flamethrower give you more offensive punch, while skills like Invasion or Energy Drain weaken your opponents and make them easier to take down. Want a little extra help? Deploy your own assault turret.
Last but not least: biotics. By controlling dark energy, your Pathfinder can harness the power of mass and gravity. Biotic skills like Pull and Throw allow you to literally control the battlefield, using your enemies as a shield or even a weapon. Abilities like Annihilation Shield or Singularity can disrupt and damage anything or anyone caught up in their powerful grip. Each skill can be upgraded to become increasingly more devastating and effective.
Each also has choices to make when upgrading, offer you more ways to customize your playstyle.
An Example Now that we have the basics down, let's put this into action. In this case our Pathfinder is equipped with a sniper rifle and a shotgun, with three powers selected. You'll notice that different enemies each behave different in unique ways. Some will keep their distance and try to snipe us. Others will charge right in and try to flash us out of cover. Sticky Grenades is an advanced version of the Omni Grenade combat skill. They're effective against just about anything, but they have a limited supply.
Enemies each have different strengths and weaknesses. For most, headshots inflict maximum damage, but you'll need to pay attention to the health bars. Yellow means it's got armor, and won't be as susceptible to certain powers. Blue means they're shielded, and in addition to being more resistant to biotics, you'll generally need to deal with those shields before their health goes down. And just like you, their shields will recharge if you don't finish them off quickly.
Tactical Cloak is a tech skill that allows you to evade enemy detection, and inflict increased damage when attacking from Cloak. And finally, Overload. Another tech skill that's great for taking out enemy shields, and synthetic enemies. By holding it before releasing, you can even chain it to multiple enemies. And this is just one of the hundreds of combinations and weapons skills you can try in Andromeda.
Stay tuned for future installments where we'll show you our profiles, to give you an added boost in combat. Favorites which allow you immediate access to your sets of power so you can change on the fly, and squad skills and commands.

Much appreciated. It seems like Bioware is doing well in keeping the feeling of Mass Effect in the setting while not undermining how the setting is suppose to be alien and new. If anything, I think this could help emphasis the feeling of the familiar against the unfamiliar: basically, adding to the atmosphere of being explorers by having that contrast. I'm very curious to see how it plays out but again, it seems promising to me and oh, I'm so excited. I may sound like a broken record at this point but I'm. so. excited.

Has anyone seen the Mass Effect movie called Paragon Lost? I find it to be surprisingly good and astonishingly accurate in a lot of ways to the games like the weapons are clearly the ones used in the games, shields become briefly visible when struck and biotics has the same sound and movement as they do in the games. I think my only real criticism is towards the character designs and how the characters are bland for the most part but I think the action, accuracy and some of the scenes make it worth a watch.

I can't put my finger on it...it's just weird. She also looks like a teenager. I think it may be a bunch of small things that creates that impression although she might have some babyface features such as her cheeks. I once knew someone who had a similar face and much to her chagrin, she would often looked younger than she actually was. It may be a similar case with Sara where her expressions affect her percieved age so with some expressions, her youthful features are more obvious than with others but I don't know. Scott has a similar face but with slightly different shapes and stubble so because of this, I think the obvious solution is to give Sara a mustache!

While I think she looks young, I think she's looks adorkable. I don't why, it's just endearing. That said, I do think her head looks oddly small in comparison to the armor she's wearing in the first 'shot.

And I'm back with my thoughts on the combat. Just needing a bit of time to read, think and formulate. I’m glad that they kept the lack of restriction on weapons: I never found it to be anything but an annoyance and it never made sense for Shepard to lack knowledge on how to properly handle certain weapons given that Shepard was an N7. A lack of restriction allows more options for players to experiment with and won’t leave them stuck with specific weapon types that they might discover a good while into the game that they don’t enjoy playing with. I’m interested in experiencing the jetpack and generally the changes they’ve made to the cover system. I like the idea of being able to use some means to temporarily hover in the air to take shots at enemies hiding behind a cover. Would be interested to do with a sniper rifle. Of course, I hope this means enemies can take shots at me as well since I'm hovering exposed up in the air. It’d also add a nice way of surveying the field if there’s no upper level to do so from. Please, oh please, just no omni-button. You know, I'm curious to see how many ceiling-involved mishaps we'll see.
I remember all of those abilities that the multiplayer characters had that I wished Shepard could have had so I approve of allowing Ryder such abilities in addition to the normal ones. At least, I’ve gotten that impression given that flamethrower is now a tech skill available and the mention of melee weapons.
Speaking of which, I like the implementation of melee weapons. I know some people don’t think they fit the sci fi setting but honestly, I consider it to be good practice to have a blade of some kind on you and not necessarily for combat purposes. I know the omni-tool was likely designed to fill this role but if it suffers a malfunction then a back-up is handy as an emergency tool. I also like the idea of combining physical objects with biotics to create hybrid techniques. I like the pure biotic techniques just fine but I don’t mind further expansion and more creative uses.
The emphasis on options makes me look forward to experiencing the combat for myself and the seeming mix-and-match freedom to customize your own skillset just seems so wonderful. I think a developer mentioned an Adept-Engineer hybrid that he’d made.
Overall, it seems like Mass Effect’s combat is being carried over and improved upon which, again, just seems so promising.

It seems Youtube is randomly putting Mass Effect: Andromeda videos in the side column of videos. I've had two: one with the 5-minute gameplay and one with the squadmates including a thumbnail with all of them. The ones I saw before I looked away was thankfully the ones I already knew about.
It may be caused by me watching Mass Effect trilogy videos but I thought I'd throw out a warning nonetheless. There is always the option to blank all thmbnails I might start using.

It may be caused by me watching Mass Effect trilogy videos but I thought I'd throw out a warning nonetheless. There is always the option to blank all thmbnails I might start using. I haven't watched any videos related to Mass Effect lately and it still gives me Andromeda videos in my recommendations I've been too lazy to block thumbnails but I might just have to do it after all.

For the hovering in the air under cover or being exposed, it was shown in action in the video, but I'm not sure if you want to be spoiled about that, so I'll keep it to myself for now. The melee weapons and their abilities looked interesting, and I've definitely seen Omni Blades in the weapon selection screen. They seemed to be a separate selection, though. So either you use an Omni Blade, or a melee weapon. I'm not sure about that, but that's what it looked like. I think that the blade would be more like an attachment, so you'd still have the Omni Tool, just without a blade. Huh, so melee weapons or at least some of them might be equippable as oppose to being purely ability? That's unexpected but does make sense. You didn't happen to see any new abilities that you could share? Not just melee but in general?
I like mixing and matching weapons with abilities. An example is how I found that I love being a sniper as a biotic: it's basically my Drell Adept's speciality and it works so wonderfully. I like being able to hang in the back, keeping track of the battlefield while also doing my share of damage with shots or biotics as well. Being able to customize my way of approaching combat is a welcomed freedom. I was happy when I was finally allowed that from the get-go in Mass Effect 3.

Almost done with my trilogy playthrough. Just beat the core game of ME2. All that is left are the DLCs and then I'm off to ME3.
I probably imagine that the forums are now flooded with a load of gameplay/plot/combat information. It is probably the wild west out there. I am glad that I now have really less than a month if you include the 10-hour early access for PC and Xbox One.

Oh, there seems to be a lot out there. I don't think SofaJockey was even a little bit exaggerating when he said this might be the last spoiler refuge left. Youtube seems to find delight in trying to spoil me by randomly putting videos in the side column. Jokes on Youtube, the thumbnail is almost always a character I've already seen! I've never been so happy that character overexposure is a thing. I mean, it's not going to stop me from possibly complaning about it in the near future but for now, it has my gratitude. Google searches has began turning up images from Mass Effect: Andromeda despite my search words having nothing to do with that.
I'm honestly kind of proud of myself that I've made it so far and that I'm no longer as tempted to look up things as I was at the beginning of my blackout. I mean, I've gotten spoiled but only really once was it about something I really didn't want to know. Gives me hope I'll be able to do better with the next game.

Me too. Just started ME3 in my trilogy run last night. Shepard and crew are hanging out in the Mars base waiting for orders...... 1 month from today early access will be available. It's interesting to see how many people are starting a playthrough either of a specific game or of the entire trilogy. I know someone who dosen't even frequent forums but who still has a desire to do the same brought on by Andromeda. It's oddly fascinating. I'm doing a modded run of Mass Effect 3 myself since I have an unfinished playthrough and I don't think I'll have time to do a trilogy run.
By the way, is anyone interested in a spoiler-free video of the character creator if it is possible? I was thinking of making one for this thread during early access for the people who want to see the cc but don't want to risk Youtube. I'd tag it, of course, for those that don't want to see the content.
Ohh! It would be great to see to see a spoiler-free version of the character creator. I would watch it for sure if you feel that you have the time for it I would really appreciate it, show us some hair then. I am really curious about what we will have this time. No pressure though, having access to the full game might be a diversion. Maybe BioWare could do what The Sims 4 does, add more hair in dlc. Sims 4 have Stuff Packs which adds some object with gameplay, some stuff for build mode and things like that. And a lot of more clothes and hair options. I quite often wish there was more to chose from hairwise in my BioWare games. Wish they would add more hair in dlc, I would buy it. I guess they tried with the spoils of the Qunari and spoils of the Avvar. That was all armour so not as interesting to me. The best armor in the world won't distract me from the boring hair. I bought the qunari-version of the dlc and passed on the Avvar one. Had there been good hair in both of them I would have bought both. Gaahh.... maybe we will get lucky in ME:A. Keeping all fingers crossed! Come on BioWare. More fun hair. Add it in dlc, I will pay for it Playing ME:3 feels like a good way of prepping for ME:A, at least I am inte the Mass Effect-world while waiting. It would have been fun to do a full ME --> ME:3 PT but I knew I wouldn't have time to finish it so ME3 it is. Besides, I find combat in ME to be a bit cluncky. I don't really like fighting that much in it. Ha ha, I guess I prefer to play me engineer in Mass Effect 3. I throw out all the droids and sit back and relax, lol.

GAhh... I guess I just have to leave twitter as well. I try to swipe by fast but sometimes you catch a headline of the post. Still avoiding ME:A news, still playing ME3 to keep myself busy. Currently FemShep and Wrex are trying out some krogan diplomacy at SurKesh. We will see how it goes. You'll be fine if you don't keep touching that button... Ha ha, leaving twitter. I have faaar to little self-control for that will just have to learn to swipe faster!

ACK!! Just totally read a spoiler on an LI for MEA in a Dragon Age Inquisition character thread!!! (Blackwall, for those curious. Don't look.) I'm really not tempted to peek at anything at all and am surprisingly patient, I guess because I know I'll only enjoy the game playing it blind like everything else. Once I get my hands on MEA, though, there will be NOTHING else.

When early access hits I guess all bet are off, better just have a link straight to this thread because general forum is bound to be buried in spoilers.

I thought the fifth would be out alongside the 5-minute gameplay trailer but now I'm wondering if it'll even be out in February as oppose to the 1th March where system requirements are revealed. Of course, it may simply be dropped online unceremoniously.
