If there had been an option for 6-8in this poll, I would have gone with that. I feel like six squadmates can work, but definitely not less. Not sure on the number of powers. I want enough variety in personalities as well as skills so I can make both a strong and balanced squad and a squad of characters I enjoy. I also enjoy when companions connect with the plot arcs and themes within the game.
ME1 worked well with six companions. I enjoyed Garrus, Tali, and Ashley, was positive about Liara, but found Kaidan and Wrex a little bland. Obviously, opinions will vary. MEA was also had six, but I only actively liked two of them, Jaal and Liam.
ME2 felt like it had way too many, but reducing the number to six seems too little. I have always felt that Thane and Samara felt like unnecessary add on characters, though I know they have fans. But, if I were to reduce to the six that best covered the game's themes, I guess it would be Miranda, Mordin, Garrus, Tali, Jack, and Legion? I feel like Grunt maybe should be in there too. I also would have liked to see Liara in the squad in ME2.
Definitely agree regarding squad consistency between games. For ME3 I just wish they had brought back more of the ME2 cast instead of adding in new characters. I am okay with losing a companion here or there for good plot and character arc reasons (for example Wrex, Mordin), but really disliked how the ME2 squad got pushed aside in ME3. Especially since ME2 was so focused on team recruitment.

Female Shepard, Colonist, Ruthless, Sniper.
I will be replaying my headcannon, first playthrough, Alexis Shepard. She is pragmatic, willing to sacrifice and do morally questionable things for the greater good of galactic civilization. Most of her choices are renegade, but I tend to mix in some paragon actions, especially when she is asked to do something shady or immoral for selfish reasons. She puts her duty, how she sees it, first.
I'm not sure if I will do a romance with this character. I've tried Kaidan (too nice) and Jacob (cringe), but neither resonated well, and both have issues Shepard being their superior officer. (Admittedly that is the case for everyone, but it feels particularly notable in the cases of Kaidan, Ashely, Jacob, Samantha, Steve, Kelly, and Vega.) Garrus feels more like a friend than a lover. I wish Jack was available for female Shepard, as originally intended.
If I play a second time, it will be my male Shepard, Paragon, Earth Born, War Hero. He was a Vanguard originally, but I might change that, as it wasn't particularly tied to the character concept.
