Patrick Weekes @patrickweekesHappy fourth birthday to #DragonAgeInquisition. Whatever happens in the future, I’m proud to have been part of a team committed to making its players’ lives better. We have some of the best, geekiest, most passionate fans in the world, and my life is better for knowing you. Well that doesn't sound incredibly ominous or anything.

Really glad to learn it's both temporary, and that Bethesda did the exact same thing with their previously Think Geek run online store.
The sale had a lot of people very worried.

Have to admit, I've rather enjoyed the day.
No, there's been no earthshattering announcements, but the Archive is a very neat feature (and gives me hope BioWare intend to continue the franchise eventually), and I think most of all it's been really great seeing the various devs/VAs past and present so active on social media, sharing stories and tidbits from their time on the games.
Actually felt like a full day of stuff, rather than a couple of things thrown to us in the morning and that's it.

Must be pretty frustrating for the MP team given how restricted they are. I got the impression from some of Fernando's tweets that while there is a fair amount they can do on the server side, one of the big issues is the knock-on effect it'll have on the game in general, and that because any issues it introduces can't be patched out & there aren't a huge amount of people to internally test said effects, they don't want to poke the hornet's nest too much by changing anything major.
That and they can't actually add any new content, obviously :/

We're entering the infuriating but heartbreaking phase where we'll be flooded with thinkpieces from well-meaning journalists, critics and pundits realising that despite it's flaws, MEA was a perfectly decent game and asking what all the fuss was really about, making defences and arguments in favor of the game they probably should have made 4-5 months ago.
Still, if there's something we can count on to fill the void between now and Anthem, it's the weekly forum threads to the effect of 'I just picked up MEA & I'm 20 hours in - why all the hate?'

Having done a lot of experimentation with this, I can shed some light on how it works... Your Ryder's colours are tied specifically to THAT Ryder sibling. If you play as Sara, change her colours during your game, then use that game as a NG+ but play as Scott, he won't get Sara's colours because he has his own. As for why Scott appeared in black & red - those are the default Custom Colours, hence them being what your sibling sometimes wears during a certain mission towards the end of the game (if you yourself have custom colours selected, I believe). If you set your own custom colours and then use that same Ryder sibling in a NG+, their starting armour will be coloured to match. You can actually fully manipulate what colours your sibling wears by creating them as a player-character Ryder in a different playthrough and exporting their appearance, then reimporting it for the game you want to play. An interesting note here is that your sibling's casual outfit on the Hyperion - and your own in Alec's flashbacks - are dictated by the armour colours, not the casual outfit colours. I managed to get Scott's clothes looking more or less like the default AI uniform by colouring his armour grey, blue & white before exporting his appearance for use.

The twitter reactions from Mass Effect 'fans' have been exhausting from start to finish.
"Fix the animations!" "Give us DLC!" "You killed Mass Effect!"
I'm just as pissed off & upset at the lack of content and how MEA has been cast aside, but for god's sake give the social media team a break. Neither they nor the MP team are responsible for what happened to the game, nor can they do anything about it.
N7 Day is going to be toxic.

It really is fascinating watching the perception of BioWare's franchises and how it changes over time.
When DA2 came out, people lost their minds of the recycled environments and claimed it was super weak compared to DAO. When DAI came out, people were suddenly praising DA2 up and down. This has only worsened over time with the bizarre revisionist history regarding DAI we see today with people acting like the game was a flop and a failure, rather than BioWare's best launch to date.
Mass Effect 3, as others have said, had people angry for a full 5 years. Now it's happily lumped in with ME1 & ME2 when they use 'TEH TRILUGEE' to bash Andromeda.
BioWare fandom rule of thumb: the newest game in each franchise is always the worst, and the previous one is always superior.
Hyperbole aside, I do genuinely think it might be down to a new game having different strengths and weaknesses to the last one, causing people to reevaluate their views of the previous game and recognise it's strengths, rather than hyperfocussing on it's weaknesses. Lots of people found DAI's companions to be less interesting than DA2's, only then realising that was something DA2 did very well, etc. etc.
If and when ME5 releases as a linear shooter with no open worlds, vehicle gameplay or new aliens, you can bet people will suddenly start praising MEA.

It's amazing how much the Synthesis ending simply being an option has had an impact on the Mass Effect franchise as a whole.
Destroy/Control are easy to continue from with a few dialogue differences between them - getting away from dealing with Synthesis is why we went to Andromeda.
I said it in the thread on how to continue the franchise, but if MEA2 isn't an option, my first choice would definitely be handwave ME3's ending and just continue on in the Milky Way with a vague 'Shepard beat the Reapers 50 years ago' backstory. Is preserving the validity of the 'space magic turns everyone in the galaxy into some interconnected techno-organic potentially-hivemind singularity without their consent' really that important anymore?

Ah yes, the guy whose comparison videos for patch improvements often feature shots that hadn't recieved improvements, with him then saying the improvements are 'clearly minor', while he completely misses the ones that did recieve huge fixes, as well as barely playing into the game to actually find what had changed - as evidenced by completely missing the Tempest cutscene change in 1.08 and eventually spotting it and mistakenly attributing it to 1.09.
His refusal to leave MEA alone during the patching process while barely exploring what had actually changed was infuriating.

In the most recent MP livestream they mentioned N7 Day falling on a Tuesday rather than the traditional Thursday they stream on, so clearly that's something they've already checked and are aware of.
Right now I'm guessing we'll get a lot of 'From the archives' tweets during the day showcasing concept art and such, and then a slightly extended MP stream where they might make any book announcements.
Going by the stream chat from this week, however, I really don't envy them. People need to realise none of the devs still taking the time to stream and keep MP going are in any way responsible for the decisions that have been made about the franchise and genuinely seem just as bummed as the rest of us.

Very encouraging that the EA Executive Vice President 'gets' what happened with the game - didn't deserve the sheer level of negativity it got, definitely released with unacceptable issues, but play it today and it's in a really good state - and pretty much confirmed the franchise isn't dead.
Just a shame it does seem the Andromeda story is over - I really worry about what hoops they'll have to jump through in future to make whatever new take on Mass Effect they produce different from both the original trilogy AND Andromeda.

Given the original trilogy was made in Unreal Engine 3 and range between 5-10 years old, it would be a massive undertaking upgrading the games in Unreal Engine 4 (unlikely given EA's ownership of Frostbite) to meet modern standards, and 'porting' them over to Frostbite would more or less involve recreating them from scratch - people don't seem to get that you can't just straight-up transfer the entire game from UE3 to Frostbite and expect it to work. You'd literally be making the game from the ground up, only with a very strict plan of where everything should go.
The only way it would be feasible is if the games simply recieved high-res textures and maybe some general improvements to lighting; anything more would require far too much work, because a lot of it would need to be done by hand. For example, many of the assets in ME1 likely exist (if they've been kept) in far higher quality than they were featured in the original game (being created in software such as maya or mudbox or Zbrush), but each and every one of them would need to be re-sourced from those assets, otherwise we'd be looking at the exact same models in our shiny modern resolutions, and I just can't see that selling. And that's before we get onto environments or special effects or swapping out textures for material based rendering.
Just think of all those corridors that would potentially need to actually reflect their environment rather than relying on crude texture maps, or the areas with baked-in shadows that would now need real-time lighting so your characters aren't casting shadows on shadows. And all the hair that would need remodelling, and would the skin recieve subsurface scattering, and would the game use more advanced depth-of-field effects, and would they seek parity between all the OT games, meaning ME1 & 2 now need even more work, etc. etc.
And let's not forget, as many did when comparing MEA to the OT - we're talking about three whole games here.
There's just so so many things that would have to be effectively remade from scratch, and while it would certainly sell, I very much doubt it would even come close to covering it's production costs given the amount of work required to make it anything more than the original games looking no better than they did on PC with a couple of texture mods.
tl;dr - the cost effective option likely wouldn't sell well, and upgrading/remaking the games would likely require more effort than just making a brand new game

Something really does need to be done about the communication issue, but I'm not sure what BioWare can do with it.
I remember when DAI production was ramping up, they talked about how they wanted to be far more transparent with fans about what they were doing - but that bit them hard when they showed off a couple of features that were eventually removed to improve the gameplay experience & streamline the game, but of course fans reacted predictably and acted like the features had been 'taken' from them.
Because we all wanted to be getting slowed down in mud and there's so many applications for setting boats on fire /s /tangent

I do not accept that Andromeda was a 'failure', and it's canon whether you like it or not.
Nothing about Andromeda was a retcon or a reboot; yes the plot jumped through some hoops to justify it's setting, but nothing about how we get to Andromeda breaks the lore of the original trilogy or impacts the experience of playing through it again.
If knowing Andromeda is canon spoils your enjoyment of games you claim to love so much that are 5-10 years old, I don't know what to tell you.

Honestly I'm inclined to say that in a manner of speaking, yes.
Andromeda has many issues, but the animations were the proverbial rock at the center of the giant snowball. Well before the game even released, they gave people an instant means to critique and mock it; rather than requiring paragraphs of text discussing the game's plot and tone, they could just post a gif of an awkward animation or facial expression, and it was so easy to spread.
Even now, you still see people posting gifs of animation issues that were patched out months ago, using them to laugh at the game.
I still honestly believe that had the game released in it's current state, while there likely would have been many who considered the plot and characters lacking and would consider it weaker than the OT, the level of vitriol and toxic behaviour would have been massively lower. Many people have many issues with BioWare and MEA itself, and those memes gave them such an easy way to go about tearing the game down and spreading their negativity around, and it's clearly had an impact.
No, better animations wouldn't fix the issues people have with the game's story or characters, but I am 100% certain there's a good number of people who would have found it far easier to connect and become invested if they weren't so distracted and unimmersed by the animations and awkward faces that have long since been fixed.

In the past, N7 Day has always been a little underwhelming at best, and I imagine this year's is going to be decidedly awkward. My guess would be showcasing fan creations and thanking them for supporting the franchise, with maybe a final MP livestream as a hangout.
As far as announcements go, I agree it'll likely be final details of the last MEA book and maybe a new comic at a stretch.
I really don't envy the devs and social media team having to plan it though. I'm still heartbroken as a player but right now I can't help but think about how the ME team is feeling. Hopefully on N7 Day there'll be plenty of positive vibes directed towards them.

I think what's getting to me most right now is how genuinely down the team seem about this. Whatever your opinion of the game, we know a huge amount of work went into it for a very long period of time, and I can't imagine how it feels to see it end this way.
I just can't believe a AAA game that's part of a beloved franchise - that we've known for a while now did perfectly fine financially - has been ditched so gracelessly. No, we don't 'deserve' DLC or additional content, but we've seen so many games that were critical or financial failures still get at least some token DLC to squeeze a little more out of the player base.
To see MEA put out to pasture and get nothing is just heartbreaking.

My thoughts on the news are too lengthy and melodramatic to bother typing, but I'd definitely echo the sentiment that Andromeda's PR has been pretty shoddy from start to finish.
We know NDAs exist and for very good reasons, but between the game's very late marketing to the complete silence only for it to end in a blog post after months of speculation, they definitely need to reconsider their fan engagement strategies. The whole wall of silence thing only works well if you're planning on tearing it down to reveal something spectacular when it's ready.
If you're going to drop news using that method, make it good news.

While I'm keeping my expectations low, my general feeling right now is that there will be something SP related further down the line - just definitely nowhere near as much as they'd originally planned.
Had things gone differently, I'm certain we'd have had some weapon/armor packs by now at the very least, with probably at least 3 SP DLC over the game's lifespan. Right now I'd say the middle of the road likelihood is there'll be a single SP DLC and that'll be it.

Honestly I feel like it's going to have to be Ryder or race-selection for the next game.
Ryder and Shepard are such polar opposites in their experience & background at the start of their respective games; any new human protagonist would have to exist somewhere on a spectrum between the two and probably just feel like a weaker version of either. Experienced soldier and freshfaced newcomer are both decent archetypes to follow the adventures of - 'kinda experienced but not that much' doesn't have that hook.
However, if the character's race was up to player choice, that creates a different gimmick to make the experience interesting. Lots has been made of how the Inquisitor doesn't feel as solid a character as Hawke, but on the other hand, Hawke can't be a qunari...
As for the plot of the game itself, I feel like BioWare's definitely got themselves in a bit of a corner - risk continuing Andromeda, or try to squirm out of it only to fall right into the issue of how do you do a non-Andromeda non-ME3-ending-retconning game that isn't a prequel?
Honestly my two main preferences for the future of Mass Effect are these...
1) Andromeda sequel, Ryder as protagonist, continue the story and learn from the MEA feedback
2) New Milky Way set game, protagonist race selection, set ~50 years after ME3 and handwave the endings (Shepard defeated the Reapers, no one knows exactly what happened, Synthesis ignored as factoring it in would be infinitely complicated)

Inquisition wasn't well received? Technically? What? It has much better scores, has game of the year awards and is Biowares #1 selling game. Not well received? Pfft. I've given up trying to understand it. For the past year or so, there's been some weird revisionist history going on with DAI; people talking like the game was a flop and a failure, despite a) all the evidence to the contrary and the fact most of us were there when it launched and saw how well recieved and reviewed it was. It's like people want BioWare to fail so badly they're trying to retroactively tear down one of their most successful games. Baffling

As someone who loved both DAI & MEA, and who has a preference for ME over DA, I do still think DAI is the better game.
It's definitely more polished and 'complete' feeling, and the areas within the game feel like they have far more history and depth, rather than everything just being 'what's here now' or 'really really old'. Plus the companion and supporting characters definitely feel like they have more going on with them and a lot more to say about things as the game progresses.
That said, MEA definitely improved on some of my issues with DAI - none of the planets feel like a dumping ground for sidequests that you can mop up, leave, and never have a reason to come back. Plus MEA has way more cutscene conversations, and those that do use the 'conversation camera' are helped by it zooming in far more than it did in DAI.
On the more negative side, neither DAI or MEA have the best storylines of their franchises for me, but on the other hand, I felt both games definitely feel like franchise peaks in terms of actual gameplay; both are the most enjoyable of the bunch to actually run around and do stuff. I'd honestly say I feel like both games are the right directions for their franchises; they just (in the case of ME especially) need a bit more time and thought put into how the story is implimented into the open world style, which I honestly think does fit both series very well, especially DA.
