I expect the story to be amazing because the stones of that have had plenty of polishing time. I presumed writers worked nearly the whole time with breaks here and there.
I expect the battle mechanics to be garbage. I didn't like Inquisition, Andromeda, or Anthem. Ass Creed Odyssey was meh. Never played Game of War and don't know how they could even make a team of 3 anything like the Witcher. If that's the direction they're going for this sequel then fighting will be the annoying thing it's always been.
I am annoyed at the prospect of a reduced team size (4 to 3) because I'm here for the story and I rarely switch out the team that makes sense for that protagonist flavor I'm playing.

I finished Vampire the Masquerade Swansong
I don't regret my time there, but so glad I played it as part of a free subscription. I have no desire to play it a second time. Occasionally it reminded me of Detroit: Become Human, which I loved. I love social interplay, and vampire mind control, and mind fucking. I loved that there were literally no good guys, like, everyone was just an asshole rationalizing their behavior. But you could also understand why
But I hate puzzles and deduction/clicking to find passwords. Trying to find items sucked, you know where you shove your character against all the walls just to see if an interactive pops up. Leveling up, where you don't get to rollover your experience, absolutely making every leveling up experience frustrating rather than feeling good. There are some skills that honestly should not exist for to even pick for each of these characters.
If you can deal with the cons, there is a super interesting story with tons of dialogue choices.

Duncan did me a solid, from one stranger to another (City Elf Origin). I didn't grieve his death, but I could appreciate why Alistair was torn up about it. Same for Hawke sibling, I felt nothing, but I empathized with Leandra. Who actually grieved Alec Ryder the man rather than Alec Ryder the well trained Pathfinder? No one. Imo, Ryder Jr can't even properly grieve outside of your own head cannon.
Anyway, doing a checkin. This thing coming out for Christmas? I may actually get to play it over school break, but playing the series leading up to release day can't happen. I so wanted DA4 to come out before medical school sucked me in.

*unavoidable grin* All I ever wanted was DA4 before medical school starts this fall for me, and I don't think I'm going to get that. I have no confidence in a DA5 and I certainly won't be hanging on tenterhooks for it for the 6 years I was for DA4. Only 6? Lucky. It would have been 8 but then I realized I stopped waiting 2 years ago. 😅

The Rose of Segunda
2 hours for the first route. 90 minutes for rereads. I laughed a LOT. The heroine is witty, clever, and not afraid to bite, hard, with words. Anyone who loves "Pride and Prejudice" will love this.
There are 6 routes, the spiciest it ever gets is a kiss CG. 3 men, 2 women and a locked secret incest route if you're so inclined. All are done well, and I found the endings of the female love interests routes especially engaging. All that said, what was introduced on Leopold's route-- a coup!!!-- makes me especially keen to see what the sequel, The Thorns of War, would have to offer.
The Prince, when given space to breathe, is solid- he was my second favorite route. Bastian himself, well... I almost felt like I had to conjole and bully him out of his job role as the lowly steward to get him to make a move. And he still freaked out and tried to call it off at the end which ,wtf. As for the secret route, I liked how it was written, I will give it that. The explanation being that raising children in complete isolation as tools can give them weird inclinations I guess.
I mostly recommend it for the comedy. And the Thorns of War is totally in my list to read now.

I finally got back to finishing off Astarian's quest after not having any time for gaming over the holidays (spending time with family, organising activities and meals to spend time with family at) Surprisingly managed to convince Astarian not to do the ritual after a successful insight check (my druids specialty) and a persuasion check (MVP Wyll coming in with a bardic inspiration) - what an emotional scene! When he started crying after killing Cazador - I've never wanted to hug a fictional character so bad , when he told the other spawn they had a choice now I legit felt proud! And he seems so happy after freeing himself and the others, my heart is filled with the warm fussies Now I better go to bed its almost midnight here When he started crying, I started 😭 crying too in real life. That scene and the scene later with Karlach. Third time I cried was final game scene about a big choice. Those are the three times this game made me cry.

BG3: Playing Dark Urge Monk Lady on Balanced mode (already finished Co-op Tactician run last week.) I have some Durge events spoiled already but I have tried to avoid most of them. Met the Dark Butler on the 3rd Long Rest. I'm playing my durge off as disturbed at the lack of memory, disturbed at the lack of self control but NOT disturbed at murder. Often kills people who dared to be alone in dark corners just to prove that murder is in HER hands and no one else's. (RIP: Nettie, bugbear tiefling, Fist who never stops praying at Wakeen's rest even though everyone left days ago.) Shadowheart got a pass on the murder knife on the beach because she looked dead and Durge kept walking-the dead are not interesting and she certainly didn't care enough about the woman to actually check if she had a pulse. Pardina got a pass on the murder knife, because she submitted so pathetically under intimidation my Durge lost interest. I wanted to kill Rugan, but considering he spoke to KArlach first and Karlach got mad at Durge recently, we did not stab him in the back. That may have been biased on my part, I wanted access to Zhentarim trade. I've taken maybe two Dark Urge choices and two resist urge choices. To top it off, no, she is not interested in tadpole powers. She's already got a lot on her plate and introducing more variables to her self control is not on the docket. She didn't hide the Bard Alfira's body- there is nothing to hide for Durge has carefully selected her party members. - Astarion could join the party because his attempt to murder my Monk was a sign he had the right moral alignment.
- told Wyll he couldn't join the party because I knew he wouldn't like working with a monster and picked exactly that explanation when Karlach asked why.
- Lae'zel wouldn't say please. That was that.
- And Shadowheart just sits there in the Grove, fiddling with the prism, and never asks to join. my Durge wouldn't ask anyone to join in the way the options present. HELP? TEAMWORK? PAH!
- Uh, Gale--- so my Durge had some thoughts and well, now part of Gale is in a box at camp. Oops.
- The only reason Karlach got a pass into the group is Wyll said she was a heartless monster and her immediate request to murder some paladins up the road seemed to support that description. Durge is very confused at the mixed signals they are getting from Karlach, considering Karlach got mad about the Bard murder she didn't cover up.
- She doesn't have Withers. Because beyond murdering those easy marks out front, WHY would she explore an old ruin when she has a tadpole in her head that may explode her and a blood lust to slate?
Questlines she's not following: kids are boring so forget talking to them. Owlbear cave-Why would she go into a cave? Ogres- why would she put her life at risk talking to them? Also she's not particularly into exploration so the kid on the harpy beach, the cave under the grove, Ethel, already mentioned the ruins are skipped. Kagha gave her lip so when she stumbled on the note indicating dirty laundry, she was quite happy to track that down so she could end the woman's life without the consequences witnesses usually have to murder. Ahem. "self defense" I was pleasantly surprised when, after stealing the bag from those spiders, I was like...ya, she'd kill some spiders. So we cast firebolt at the nest and 4 cat sized spiders came out. I laughed because I honestly didn't think anything would happen, it's be like burning a spider nest only in my heart, but the game responded to the action. So I'm accidentally running a 3 person party with no Withers. Even on Balanced that has resulted in TPKs level 3 and under. Level 4 is so much better. This has been interesting because my original intent was to run an evil-ish play through and see Gale, Shadowheart, and even Wyll be their worst selves. And none of them are in the party because I'm role playing. I grumble yet I find it excellent nonetheless. Because it's fun finding out what kind of person I'm playing when I just give a few rules.

Dude, WHAT? I can't imagine you'd actually finished the game when you made this comment. I would say Astarion and Zevran are quite similar. I don't see the similarity with Dorian.
Zevran voluntarily chose seduction over the traditional method. Even his ex boyfriend comments on it. Morrigan, though, was heavily pressured by mommy dearest to have sex and murder her marks. I also think their personalities are a lot more similar because Zevran is actually pretty laid back and will try to talk you out of some of the evil choices, where Morrigan is more like, "why are you helping people, weak people, and for free?"

Oh well I dunno then. We've been playing on PC and haven't encountered any real bugs at all tbh. We were playing PS5 couch co-op from September to New Year's Eve. Act III had loading issues- once an entire building didn't have walls. Several times, using the portals to travel around Baldur's Gate the city, a scene would start- audio only, black screen, because the image hadn't loaded yet. Happened for when random citizens turn into Illthid but also when Counselor Florrick threatened to arrest us for "killing Duke Ravengard". Which made for, "huh, what's happening, people are yelling but I know not why" moments. These didn't super bother me, but not being able to save for the last 15-20 hours of gameplay did. The game was made for PC first, so it makes sense that it runs well on PC.

We saved all the gondians in the prison and the foundry. Some folks swear up and down that the prison is insanely difficult because of buggy AI. My partner and I did it on Co-op, blind, without a hitch. So when I say what I saw in the basement of the foundry was impossible because of screwed up AI, then I simply believe we had different experiences based on the voodoo of computer programming. Enough people have issues saving the Gondians that I absolutely believe it is a legitimate issue that needs to be fixed.

It's not really something that's fully come out via the LP but man the companions seem to be pretty universally...not nice people. Yet some of them are extremely attractive,in one way or another, people. I'm confused. The coldest thing I ever heard Karlach say was about the Soul Coins- may as well be used for her to kill bad guys than for the bad guys to use them. I get it, but my poor heart, some of the stories behind these coins are deeply dark.

I love DA:I to death but BG3 clearly has a lot more in terms of choices and reactivity, but it mostly boils down to '' which person/group do I kill '' or '' good choice/evil choice. '' What DA:I might lack in terms of choices or '' illusion of choice '' and overall reactivity, it makes up for the few choices you do make not have a clear right answer, and while you do not see the consequences of your actions during the game (which is a shame), your choices do shape the world in big ways. I don't think there's anything at all close to Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts in BG3, for example. Honestly, there is probably only one choice in the entire game of BG3 that I feel like will have people debating (fpr years to come) on what is the '' best '' choice, while every big choice you make in DA:I has people still discussing what is the best way to go, in general or for their character. The debate over who should rule Orlais is still to this day really interesting to read. Agreed. My interest in other people's choices in BG3 lays in, "oh neat, you can do that?" But there are clearly wrong and right choices.

It feels like it's the entire fanbase, every encounter with a BG3 fan has been horrible. Why should I listen to the "good" fans if they're not even standing up to this nonsense? The good fans are getting downvoted on Reddit, no worries 🤣 on Reddit, I don't believe I'm allowed to dislike anyone but Wyll. If I say I honestly don't see Shadowheart and Lae'zel as a couple capable of naturally happening or that Gale is a smarmy prick, I'm downvoted to oblivion.

Ok I’ll give you the tie as it’s subjective but I’m waiting on the rest They're all subjective you know? Like River said, people have different tastes. I'm looking at BG3 and I'm wondering why are people forcing me to like a CRPG that I'll probably have a hard time playing on console? Really? It's super easy? Since it's turn based you have all the time in the world. Can use toggle or D pad to select bad guys. R1 and L1 don't even have to be constantly pressed to keep the action wheels on the screen.

I’ve been playing now for weeks and there isn’t 1 thing dai does better than Bg3. Bg3 excels in romances Ignoring your subjective view, this here already proves you wrong. BG3 just has playersexual romances that forces sex, while DA has romances with actual orientations including letting you play Ace. Unfortunately true. My partner tried to do an Ace relationship with Shadowheart. But not kissing her ends the romance. BG3 made some great characters to romance but do fall back on the standard Romance=Sex trope that Bioware broke the mold in with Andromeda

Post by phoray on Jan 2, 2024 17:07:39 GMT
I finally finished BG3.
better CC: Dragon Age Inquisition remains the best I've ever used (minus hair options) I went to try to move a scar on my new avatar in BG3 and realized I couldn't. Also realized there are race locked faces so it doesn't matter if I really liked that tiefling face AND don't want to sport a tail. Also, ambiguous gender or effeminate male faces don't seem to exist, and the female bodies are tied to the female faces.
Graphics: BG3 has better graphics than DAI. The hair is a LOT better even though the PS5 can't seem to render it the way I see on youtube videos. The expressions are beautiful too--mocap!
Cinematics: BG3 is better. The bulk of the romantic scenes, and over half the rest of the normal scenes, look like they got the same treatment the Cora Sex Scene from Andromeda got. Lots of mocap = good. Thumbs up.
romance system mechanics: It would really behoove some of these scenes/conversations in BG3 to be locked behind Story Events. Lae'zel can proposition you for sex after one day of knowing you. I haven't had this much romantic whiplash since Dorian, similarly not locked to story events, did everything practically back to back. I suppose other than the speed/rate, they are on par with Dragon Age.
Story is good. Nothing I'd write fanfiction about which only Dragon Age ever made me do. I don't really HATE any of the bad guys? No one person is your main enemy. There were more like "Enemy of the Act" flavor of the month kind of thing. I hated Loghain, Meredith, and Coryface, at least right after Haven I did.
Companion story lines: Astarion and Karlach moved me to actual tears. Wow. And Lae'zel moved me on several occasions so much that I deeply came to respect her. Wyll is plain toast and the rest of the cast I'm pleasant, neutral, or slightly dislike about them. This is compared to Morrigan's, Anders', Blackwall's storyline arcs.
Music: That house of hope song slaps and I put it on repeat for a couple hours. Alfira's song was great the first two times but I'm over it now. The rest of the music is forgettable and I'm downright tired of the start screen music. Dragon Age wins.
Combat: I only ever liked Origins' slower combat out of all the trilogy. Considering BG3 is that on steroids, I'd say BG3 combat wins. it can be finnicky though. Complete Build Control is glorius. Lot of ways to min max or just have flavor fighting that feels significant, so BG3 wins.
Stealth: Is possible, stealing is possible and worth trying. YAY
BG3 has the murder knife! And evil decisions that are remarked as evil and companions with agency that leave because you suck. but sometimes not. I've heard the narrator say the MC was siding with the bad guys as a form of infiltration when people are playing as evil. Like, it doesn't recognize a character that would be Pro Absolute and follow the cult because they believe in it.
Dialogue System: We need some Heart Symbols to indicate flirting lines. What are we doing here, BG3? no one should be ninja manced in 2023/2024. They have brackets for persuasion/intimidation etc, so why not flirting?
companion and inventory management: I can't equip that item on that character unless I kick someone from the party and add the other one. The new patch 5 slightly helps in that I can at least SEND items but come on.
Long rests to receive companion content: I don't love it. I can understand it gives some control to the player to make sure the scenes trigger when THEY want them to rather than say... going back to camp to get something only for this dramatic scene to start. I don't know how they could fix it, because it is better than clicking on a companion any time or day and getting a cutscene you didn't know you were gonna get. But the fact of it is that this ultimately causes me to long rest 3 times as often as I would naturally. The drawback to this is all the ritual spells, potions, and elixir buffs resetting and some of these are hard to come by, so I don't want to burn through them willy nilly just to get all the scenes. So then I'm doing 6 long rests back to back to save on potions/elixirs.
In the world companion banter: on par with Dragon Age and seems to trigger more often and correctly than DAI ever did.
BUGS: BG3 has some game breaking bugs. I literally couldn't save the last 15 hours of gameplay on the PS5 because of Error Code 544 and it's a well known PS5 error. I had to just save the end game for a Saturday and played straight until 5 in the morning, just leaving it idle if I did other things rather than log out and lose my efforts. I've heard Xbox is having severe issues as well. I think expecting the game mechanic of "saving" to work is a pretty acceptable thing to expect out of a game that's been out 6 months.
AI: Some of the AI for NPCs in battle are broken, everyone who's made it to Act III knows about the Gondians. I literally don't know how anyone can save any of them. WE dimension door'd one to safety only for it to misty step BACK into combat on it's turn and then die. I almost feel like you'd have to attack and knock them out and then dimension door their unconscious body to save any of them.
I'll probably come back and edit in more as I read other's stuff.

Croatsky"was a bit surprised to notice he is hugely popular among women. I thought Gale would be more popular!" I was neutral to Gale. Then I turned him down for sexy time at the party and he was nasty about it. This was Early Access so they may have "fixed" the dialogue like they have for other dialogue but it left a pretty disgusted feeling in me. Much time passed and I even saw a bit of his romance scene and flirted but we didn't click. Honestly found his complete acceptance of his plan to kamikaze at the mere direction of his goddess, no questions asked, to be pretty smooth brained. As another person mentioned, he sure does speak as if he is currently in love with his own Goddess with very little clarification offered as to otherwise. So I start a new play through as a Sorceress and then he has the audacity to claim that since my magic was innate rather than learned that I was some uneducated pleb incapable of understanding the Weave. I was like, oh ya. You're an elitist asshole. I'd almost forgotten. Gonna leave you to die in a portal 100% going forward. Also, as much people paint Astrarion as lacking morality and being power hungry (which, ya, true) Gale sure does go on a long tangent about the possibilities in Act III that were just as bad as some of Astrarion's worst plans. Gale may pretend to be a goody two shoes but if he can contemplate THAT plan, he simply isn't. I don't like Wyll because he's a hypocrite. Then he got horns and that made him even uglier. His confession scene is also super abrupt with absolutely no lead up. I ship him with Karlach to be honest.

olnortonI thought it was you who told me that Geralt loved Yenn before the wish. He's the one, guided by that emotion, wishing that their fates would be forever intertwined. Yenn then doubts the emotions she has back towards him are real, and it delays their love by many years. This seems to be supported by the TV show as well Okay, so Triss thinks Yenn is dead. It's still absurd that she can find time to fuck him multiple times but never actually fill him in about a huge part of his life. The fact that she omits the existence of Yenn says to me she wanted to hide it. If Yenn is dead, she truly believes it, then there no harm to her chances of being in his pants to say, "you used to absolutely adore a powerful sorceress named Yenn. These were you adventures. I miss her too " and then proceed with the fucking, more or less. She thought the knowledge would cock block her, so she withheld. And that's insecurity and dishonesty that makes me dislike her.

Triss has her charms, but like you say she is very young compared to Geralt, whereas Yen is much closer to his age (maybe even older...? Not sure, but closer definitely). At the end of the books, Triss would be at least 100, so older than Geralt, who was about 85, and Yennefer 10 to 16 years older than Triss, but no more. Their relationship is a bit messed up - inherent power imbalances will do that fairly often - but, in the games at least, the mere fact that she went to the effort of finding out if what they had was real means that she's a genuine partner for him. Yes, by Witcher 3 she clearly loved him, but for the previous 30 years they had known each other, she was just using him. I think the important part of all this is that he loved her anyway. He knew exactly what she was and he loved her anyway. He was complicit in his own use. I can't forgive Triss for trying to steal his affections while he had memory lapse. Triss used him but Geralt was consenting to that use while not knowing himself or his history- but she did know his history of loving Yenn and still she did it. Maybe it's because in the games, I play as Geralt so "I'm" the one being used and take it more personally. UNRELATED:I took a break from romantic visual novels to binge two romantic animes - one of which is getting a romantic visual novel sequel where you can actually put her together with one of her harem. I feel like the anime thus far only sees Keith, Nicol and Prince Geordo as real options for her as much as these shows try not to pick favorites. They waffle on whether Sofia loves her as just a best friend or sexually. Maria seems practically asexual but romantically into her. Mary is full Sappho. And Prince Ian is the forgotten male love interest who seems to be fine with being forgotten. It's be hard to pick 1 of the 3. I think she's always found Nicol attractive, which is saying a lot for her denseness if interest in romance for herself. But the Prince has made the most moves, since they've been engaged since childhood and feels safe to do so. But she's said multiple times that she isn't royalty material and she would find being prince consort to be stifling so I just feel like those concerns are valid. #2, Keith is her precious "brother". They are very distantly related cousins. In her mind, she's not even from this game world so she's not related to anyone. I don't mind the "blood relation" but I do mind them being raised together. At least from her perspective, it does seem that she absolutely sees him as a brother but he never saw her that way. But she seems in one episode to apparently seek him out for all validation of her activities, to me this is not a sibling thing to do. Her actions don't bely what few thoughts she has on the Matter (she has so little contemplation of romance in any of her monologues.) do get a bit frustrated in the second season with how the equivalent of a 25 year old woman in a 17+ lady's body who reads as many romance novels as she does is so naive but 🤷🏻♀️ anyway, the least problematic seems to be Nicol- she doesn't have to act like royalty and she has always found him beautiful which is the closest to attraction I've seen her have. But it will be a video game so I'll get to pair her up with a couple folks and see who I like best.

He still loves her, even after the Last Wish had been lifted. Don't judge me. I like brunettes.
I picked her again last time too. She's just so much more pleasant to be around when she's happy.
I think it was olnorton who really explained the books to me and I kinda feel like as screwed up as their romance was, Geralt loves her and she loves him. I also like that she's ready to settle down with him, whereas the redhead is just gearing up for her career
