My, he's picky and it's clear he has expectations. Me, not so much since I don't really have high expectations of Greedfall. What I'm seeing and playing now is reasonable and enjoyable. Also, plus points. It has no MTX. I dunno, I pretty much agree with what he had to say. I honestly feel like I am back playing a poor mans DAO and that game is 10 years old. The travelling back and forwards and negotiating multiple checkpoints (that is visit 3 people for 30seconds of basically irrelevant conversation) for a small amount of dialogue is already driving me nuts after <10hrs. Add to that the travel system which is like a rip off of DAO's travel system again which is 10 years old and is also tedious. Then I was so happy to head to the wilderness and within thirty minutes I had slaughtered so many animals and the combats lack of diversity and graphical WOW factor again was just a bit underwhelming. I hate being negative about a game and I keep hoping at every turn that the game is going to somehow WOW me but I just keep being disappointed. Some people talk about "Feels"during the game, so far I have not experienced one. For me one of the biggest frustrations is money and ammo. Ammo costs way too much and the amount of coin you get for missions etc. it terrible I think. I had to spend ages just running around New Serene to scrape together some extra coin from crates etc I missed just to buy some new gear. Anyway, I want to enjoy the game really badly and maybe that's the problem but I am just finding it a tad frustrating and quite tedious. I'll give it another couple of day, so maybe 10 hours but if I don't start getting invested in De Sardet and his quest and the companions by that stage I think I'll put it aside. I'd rather go back and finish my incomplete MEA PT, play ACOD again or play Crysis 3 after recently completing the first two for the 3rd time. Hell its actually motivated me to go back and play DAO again so maybe I'll do that. Man I hate being negative about a game!!!!! For me; I can't remember DAO's travel system but I do recall it being tedious. Feels?? Bioware Feels? I don't get that with this game. It's just a game with reasonable dialogues, etc. I don't know about money and ammo because I'm not using firearms very much though I picked up the skill just to have a third option. Most of the time it's magic which cuts through the armour bullshit. Yep, magic ignores armour so I never have to spend a huge amount of time trying to beat down the shields. When I ran out of mage power, I just shoot or if near the target, wade in for a melee and retreat. Definitely the combat is lacklustre. I don't buy armour either. My toon is still wearing the same stuff she has in the beginning. I can't upgrade because I didn't choose that skill yet though for some reason I could upgrade Kurt's armour and his sword. That could be the first aborted PT though. I chose magic for the second try after finding I don't like the melee style. And oh yes, I'm playing on easy. I don't see the point of spending a lot of time, as I said, beating down the shields with boring combat. De Sadet just made level 10 after killing one of those odd looking big white monsters with huge spears. I just let the companions do most of the harrying, stayed out of the way and just blast the critter with magic.

I focused on melee and guns but think I'll respect tomorrow and do guns and magic. I started on normal but yeah the combat was a chore so dropped it a few levels ago. Had a tough fight just before I stopped against some Forrest guardian. Big green tree thing. It's late here, will message you tomorrow to discuss more as typing on my phone is a PITA. 😛

Hell its actually motivated me to go back and play DAO again so maybe I'll do that. Man I hate being negative about a game!!!!! You should not feel pressured to like a game only because it's the same genre you usually enjoy. Sometimes a game just doesn't hit home, no matter how close it is to something you previously liked. Greedfall does pick up after the first 5 hours, but if you are at 10+ already and don't feel it, then it probably won't happen even after 20+.
Ammo and money do seem a bit too tight at first, I completely agree. This should be remedied by a patch, or, since you are on PC, just use a mod or a trainer. I was tempted to do this on a few occasions, but instead diversified my gun build with some sword skills and now that I am at two handed swords, I barely remember to use my super gun with 180 ammo in it (each ammo crafting gives 5 units. I didn't know that, so when I thought I get 10 ammo, I actually crafted 50 Was wondering how the hell those bullets get replenished so much. Now, I don't even buy the iron ore needed for ammo, as I have too many). Took some time to practice in the Arena and get the hang of parrying the different enemies (learning their cues). Also, before I knew it, I was minmaxing my gear (you probably know I love to do that) and maxed the Balance score, because I was sick of being knocked down. Did the same for my companions. And suddenly all fights on Normal became a stomp fest. Siora and Petrus killed even a big swamp boss without my help (well, I was just evading him, so still helped) Turned to Hard for now to see how long I will last.
Personally, I enjoy the game immensely and so far will rate it above DAI (my least favorite DA game), maybe close to DA2, but not better, at best - even. However I am familiar with Spiders's previous work and my expectations were largely based on that. In the same way I had set my expectations for MEA based on DAI - wasn't too disappointed and still rate MEA above DAI too. Yes, DAI is very superior in the companion department, but outside of that - as a story, quests and especially minute to minute gameplay (where you spend the vast majority of your time) it just isn't as much fun as MEA (where combat is great just about every time).

Bioware has one last shot, DA4, can they do it? *sits back and watches*

I wouldn't call DA4 their last shot exactly. If it does very well in initial sales, which it probably will unless there's a massive upset in design, there's still something for EA to hang onto the Bioware studios/label for, even if just for sake of intertia.
I do insist that DA4 is their last shot at anything resembling a legacy Bioware reputation (however each of us see it, whatever 'era' we come from). Any game after that will either be a totally new form of Mass Effect (being several years after the soft reboot MEA, and over a decade after ME3), or an Anthem 2 We're Sorry, or a new game/franchise we're not familiar with.
DA4 will be the last time they have to let gamers know that they know, or at least have some good and respectable idea, of what 'Bioware' means. Because the common narrative now is that with at least Anthem and MEA (and some would say DAI, and even fewer would say DA2/ME3), they are rapidly losing it. They can still make money if they lose at this, but good luck at building a new fanbase that'll show up to anything you want to do and buy whatever you want to sell.

Well - It's finally released a few day's ago. One of the games I was looking forward the most (although I cannot play it yet, see below as for why). Anyway - The first early review are in, and it looks promising. The game also gets a good score on Metacritic (for what it's worth). Here are two reviews:
And a maybe more biased review, because the guy likes the Trails series.
And for the reason I cannot play the game (hopefully yet). It's PS4 only, and I do not own a PS4. With a price (Including the game) of more than 510 Euro's it is just not within my reach (I also want to keep my DAW software up to date, so that takes some money too). I can only hope there will be a PC version in a not too distant future.
That said - It's great to see the English localization of the game finally released. I hope the game sells well, so it will be interesting to also translate the last part of the series (Cold Steel IV).

I enjoyed Greedfall. I would recommend it with the warning that the middle drags and it has weak (but likeable) companions. The strong story made up for the drawbacks for me.
