Random Fact:
Did you guys know that Sigourney Weaver was nominated for an Best Actress Oscar for Aliens? I still find that amazing that they even paid attention to a sci-fi movie.

Seen the movie, and I kind of have to agree with a lot of the points that Ventus stated at their post above. I'm not going into spoilers since not everyone's seen the movie yet, but I did kind of face-palmed in a couple of places and I even called the ending half-way through, so I didn't get the sense of horror that they were aiming for. As for my experience with the other Alien movies, since I'm at it: My folks *love* movies and when I was a kid, they'd rent just about any movie of any genre. So, when curiosity got the better of them with Alien - especially after the stellar reviews it received - they rented it out, tucked me in for the night (I was almost five), and they settled down to watch it. Unfortunately for them, I got thirsty during the night and went to them to ask for a glass of water. Right at the moment John Hurt's chest exploded on screen. Poor 'Rents were pretty sure that I had been scarred for life, but, except for an extreme sense of disgust at the scene, I was fine. It also had the side-effect of me not wanting to watch the movie for many years because I thought it was just a gore-fest. Finally, my best friend convinced me that it was certainly *not* a gore-fest and I wouldn't regret checking it out. I certainly haven't. I now have both Alien and Aliens in my DVD collection and Ripley is one of my favourite movie heroes. As for the other films: I thought Alien 3 was okay. Not bad at all even if it kind of ruined the happy ending that I felt Ripley deserved after the trauma(s) she'd been through. I've only seen bits and pieces of Resurrection and I didn't like what I saw. The first AVP was meh, at least the Predators looked cool. Prometheus was beautiful visually and thank goodness for that, because otherwise I felt the story was all over the place because, apparently, the script went through so many re-writes that it wasn't funny anymore. I've only checked out two of the Alien Games. Alien Isolation, which is actually pretty good, very atmospheric. And then there's Colonial Marines... Let's just say that the fact that it got the okay to be considered canon in the Alien universe had me really excited at first, but I only ended up cringing by the end of the game.

At this rate I'd expect nothing less than David encountering the Abrahamic God and killing him with the spore powder and a pack of Xenomorphs.

I can't even begin to explain how utterly retarded the writing in these films are. Scott clearly never had any lore laid out, it's just evolved in a sloppy manner as the films got released. Look up how the engineers are responsible for human life and it's like some half baked take on the bible.

I prefer Predators (as in the aliens themselves, not the movie). I never bought into all the wank about the "perfect organism" or indeed how Alien was "the perfect movie". I enjoyed the original movies well enough and recognize their iconic status. But the creature itself? Meh. It's a space velociraptor (made from sex toys). The only unique selling point is the Face Full of Alien Wing-Wong. I skipped Prometheus but just saw Covenant and yeah.... What the actual fuck? This is a whole other level of wank (and not even the favorable kind to the franchise). I read a while back that Scott was shitting on AVP and looking down on people asking if he'd go that route. He can kindly eat a(n alien) dick. AVP is miles above this garbage. Anyway, here's some rankings: Predator Predator 2 AVP2 (the game) Aliens Alien AvP: R Predator: Concrete Jungle (game) Alien Resurrection Predators AVP AvP 2010 (game) Alien 3 That scene at the end of Spaceballs My high school fanfic Making an xenomorph ragdoll flip out in G-Mod Alien Covenant

Ridley Scott is merely parasiting his own series. Like his monster, he jabbed into it, injected some foreign crap and now it's birthing some weird new thing as it's destroying the old that people aren't gonna like very much. I'm not sad Blomkamp's version never saw the light of day either, given he was planning to ignore the last two movies. I hate it when people do that. Otherwise, to soften the blow of what I just said: I heard enough about it looking up stuff on Covenant that I finally watched Prometheus. And you know what, the new shit (David and his black stuff, the Engineers) wouldn't be that bad, if they were their own thing. It's not Alien, and that's why people hate it. But if they made their own franchise with it? It'd be pretty good. It might actually be better than Alien as for the longest time I couldn't figure why anyone would design the alien if they already had some black stuff that can infect anything with varying (but always brutal) results. How is the xenomorph better? The black stuff is easier to store and deploy, harder to defend against (you can still shoot a facehugger, destroy eggs, even surgically remove the chestburster if you're fast enough) and more immediately lethal (if it doesn't mutate you to shit and cause you to attack others, it just kills you). Even from a franchise perspective, if they had gone with a completely different universe, they'd draw comparisons sure, but the black stuff would be gold creatively since it doesn't just do one thing. You could keep pumping out movies and feature different monsters every time.

Otherwise, they're really just wild animals. At the same time, I can kind of see where said robot is coming from. They're cunning, intelligent, and physically strong, highly resistance to physical trauma and are hardy enough to survive in pretty much any environment short of an outright vacuum (and even then you see the Xenomorph in the original Alien surviving in a vacuum for a short time as it crawls along the exterior of Ripley's shuttle after she jettisons it out the airlock, and only kills it by blasting it with the engines and sending it flying away). If they had human-level intelligence and could use tools like us, they would be fairly close to what could feasibly be called a "perfect" organism. It helps that they can populate extremely fast and reproduce asexually, so they're very difficult to fully eradicate from an area once they begin to inhabit it. And yes, a lot of the fear generated by the idea of the Xenomorphs is tied to the sexual undertones of the facehuggers. That was deliberate. The Xenomorphs were originally conceived by H.R. Giger, after all (in fact, the Xenomorph is specifically based on a painting of Giger's from 1976, called Necronom IV, which itself is derived from a recurring nightmare that Giger once suffered from). The symbolism of the facehugger "raping" someone and the overall phallic design of the Xenomorph is 100% intentional. It doesn't scare me personally, but I do think that the Xenomorph is one of the best looking alien creatures in all of fiction. I fucking love their look, it's awesome. I do agree that AVP is better than Covenant. In fact, the first AVP is a perfectly serviceable movie, IMO. The second one is shitty garbage, but the original 2004 AVP is probably the last halfway decent movie that Paul W.S. Anderson has ever made.

Seriously, Ridley needs to rein in his erection for Michael Fassbender. I mentioned this in my first post in the thread. Michael Fassbender went from being an important character in Prometheus, to playing 2 roles in Covenant, with one of said roles retroactively becoming arguably the single most important figure in the series. David is more important than Ripley at this point, and Ripley was a literal stand-in for Jesus in Alien 3.

Otherwise, they're really just wild animals. I know. But some first film purists took that busted robot's words literally. I've actually seen someone argue that Cameron ruined the Alien by having the Marines cap'em left and right. They really took the alien to be literally unkillable. Which is of course pants on head retarded. The space truckers in the first movie were, well space truckers with no guns and no combat training. The Colonial Marines were marines. It's that kind of thinking that leads to boring as fuck slasher movies that become parodies of themselves. The orginal is always about some psycho chasing civilians, usually dumb and horny teenagers that to be fair, would probably die on their own if the warning labels were taken off of everything. They're not meant to be about literally unkillable demons but that's what they always end up as. I do agree that AVP is better than Covenant. In fact, the first AVP is a perfectly serviceable movie, IMO. The second one is shitty garbage, but the original 2004 AVP is probably the last halfway decent movie that Paul W.S. The only positive I can give the first AVP is the pyramid idea was kind of cool and Lance Henriksen. That's about it.

Ehh, it's Bigger Jaws. Besides, it was poorly done in the film. It was advantageous for the human sure, but why would the Predator give a shit? She wasn't a warrior, she wasn't worth the time of day, even if she did hand him a plasmacaster. In the original stories the chick was not only explicitly a certified badass but as I recall the battle was just what she had been looking for in life. She was actually made out to be a kindred spirit to the Yautja, not just "oh I'm here and I want to live."

Whereas he's turning David into Faust, which is a sort of interesting idea if you look at it that way (And it might redeem this a bit if he's destroyed by his own creation) but... I mean, I like Fassbender and his performance, but this is getting to be a bit much. When Prometheus was coming out he talked about how interested he was in following up on Shaw and the Engineers in another movie but I guess he just decided to punt that whole story to the curb in the name of making Fassbender the father of the Xenomorph.

I enjoy both AvP movies, the first one a bit more because I like the pyramid setup and found the characters a bit more memorable. I would agree that the team up wasn't very well done though and it bugged me that the first two Predators go down from one xenomorph.
