Welp, I think I'm finally cured of my most maudlin weekly habit. The contempt the writers show toward the audience is just gross. This whole thing could have been actually effective if it all of the stupid padding had been yanked out and tightened up into a single hour episode. As it stands, all of the worthless filler, replay after replay of the same doe-eyed close-ups, Negan's endless fucking monologuing (with some of the most repetitive, unmenacing and at times just juvenile writing I've ever heard delivered by a 50 year old man; seriously, "pee pee pants city" is my Vietnam), and the cheap manipulation of the various s6 cliffhangers completely undermined any power and tension this arc might have had. But anything for those sweet ad dollars, eh AMC? (Also we've apparently reached the point where the aftershow is longer than the show it's discussing, which is pretty special in its own right)

Had the DVR record it so I could start it like half an hour late and end at the finish time. AMC loves commercials. I just need to know how many episodes until Nagan gets his comeuppance so I can skip the intervening ones. Do you want the good news or the bad news? In spoilers. Seriously, spoilers. Spoilers. Heh, I tried to avoid the spoiler but the quoting made me see a couple words. I figured I had like a season and a half or so, not unexpected given how slowly AMC shows move (well they aren't completely alone).

But anything for those sweet ad dollars, eh AMC? I agree... this show is like an abusive lover, you always hope they'll change but never do. However, I actually thought the premiere was sort of good (by TWD standards) because it actually delivered what the finale promised. No fake-outs this time. Should have been the S6 finale, absolutely. But I liked that Rick's group actually lost for once. For real! No way out. Negan completely owned them. That is something new even if it won't amount to anything. It never does. Round and round it goes eventually every season, with no sense of direction or resolution. And nobody expects it at this point anymore which is the worst thing about it. Makes me want to tear out my hair sometimes. All this potential that never goes anywhere. However, despite this overall narrative mess I thought this episode worked for the most part. Emotionally manipulative, of course. But it was effective on me. Most difficult hour of TV to watch in a long time. I had no problem getting back into the mindset and really feeling their terror and utter despair. Pride before the fall. It was nicely set up imo. But good grief, this show needs to end. Can't really top that shit anymore. You can hit the absolute bottom of despair only once. And this is it now. They came close several times with Rick's family. But now it's everyone. The stakes cannot possible be any higher. What needs to happen now is for them to survive it and then be REWARDED with something lasting. A sustainable community. Some sort of actual effort to rebuild and claim the world for the living again. Something. But I don't think it's going to happen. The writers are committed to the message that this life is endless misery. One day everyone's just dead and that's it. I hope I'm wrong. I wish I could quit this show. But once I commit I need to know how it ends. The show made me care enough about certain characters to keep me watching. And unfortunately my favorite character Carol is still alive so I won't give up on the Caryl ship until it sinks. ;P Definitely the worst show I've ever invested in. I'm constantly ashamed of myself...

... I liked it.
I mean, they killed off my favorite character so I'll be sad for awhile but I thought it was well done.
I also thought they NAILED Negen! The casting, the dialogue, everything! He's way closer to the source material than the Governor was.
I lost interest last season and missed a few episodes but last night got me back into it. Can't wait to see Izekiel and his pet!
Also I like the after show! Chris Hardwick is always funny and even though it's a bit cheesy at times, it's cool to see the actors out of character.

Negan's endless fucking monologuing (with some of the most repetitive, unmenacing and at times just juvenile writing I've ever heard delivered by a 50 year old man; seriously, "pee pee pants city" is my Vietnam) That's just Negen though. They probably won't go into it on the show but in the comic books, before the Apocalypse, he was a freaking high school gym teacher. Not a good one either, always in trouble for criticizing his students with insults and foul language. He loses someone close to him, then kinda loses his mind, then (Somehow? Wtf?) becomes the leader of what basically amounts to a giant cult. He does some TRULY fucked up things in the comic but at the same time he ALWAYS stops to help survivors getting attacked by zombies, punishes people for abusing defenseless women and children, and is shown multiple times stopping, punishing, and condemning rape. He is a complex character, IMO. His intentions are always hard to discern and he instantly becomes the center of attention in every scene he's in. I think he has the most interesting arc the entire comic. He is definitely an asshole though and constantly displays "juvenile" behavior. So probably get used to that.

Well, I didn't think I was gonna be able to do it, but I powered through watching the episode again. Of course, muting it when all the bad stuff happened. I really didn't think that the show could get any more gruesome than Hershell's death. Boy, was I wrong. As a comic reader who is fully caught up with the source material (which is currently well ahead of the show), I will at least say this, as I've been trying to tell folks who are on or going over the edge due to last night's gruesomeness: unless the show decides to go so off the comic reservation that it might as well be Thelma and Louise driving off the cliff, last night was as bad as it gets as far as sheer grossness. If you made it through Negan's introduction - congratulations, the worst is over. Seriously. We are at 159 comic issues. Last night was covering issue # 100 and that issue was, hands down, the most disgusting one of the whole bunch. Yes, there will still be the typical zombie apocalypse violence and bad things, but you will not have to endure that level of graphic horror again. At least, not from my somewhat-limited comic premonition. Because we all know the show doesn't follow the comic to the letter. But I doubt they're gonna ramp the graphic content up to that level again, especially with the amount of negative feedback it is (deservedly) getting right now. (Also we've apparently reached the point where the aftershow is longer than the show it's discussing, which is pretty special in its own right)I hate to see you give it up. I say that because right now starts some of the most interesting and cool storyline arcs from the comics, but that's also just my opinion. And I'm definitely biased because I loved comic Negan's juvenile humor. I will say that, so far, it's translating badly because comic Negan is more of a in-his-30's, football player-looking, cursing manchild... whereas Jeffrey Dean Morgan is, obviously, much older, much less physically imposing, lacks the cursing due to cable censorship (that might be considered an improvement to you, though, because the cursing just reinforces the juvenile thing) and overall just kinda... seems like a conflicting fit. I do agree, however, that the filler was annoying and I was appalled that The Talking Dead was set to be longer than the damn premiere. I believe next week's episode of Walking Dead is actually set to be an hour and a half, which also seems weird, but I also believe it is introducing an entirely new community (not evil), so maybe they are taking time to really establish it. And unfortunately my favorite character Carol is still alive so I won't give up on the Caryl ship until it sinks. ;P Definitely the worst show I've ever invested in. I'm constantly ashamed of myself... Psssst. Keep watching. I mean, the comic isn't over yet. More terrible things could definitely happen. But the comic is way ahead of the current storyline and just trust me: keep watching. Yes, everyone is at the absolute worst pit of hell right now. The only way out is up, as they say, yes? And that's all I'll say because I try not to be a dick about spoilers. Just... keep the faith and keep watching. Negan's endless fucking monologuing (with some of the most repetitive, unmenacing and at times just juvenile writing I've ever heard delivered by a 50 year old man; seriously, "pee pee pants city" is my Vietnam) That's just Negen though. He's a very divisive character - you either continue to hate his guts or you find yourself grudgingly liking some parts of him (and questioning your own morality due to liking that son of a bitch at all). I know of no person who feels ambivalent about him, which is the sign of a well-written character. Personally, he's one of my favorites of any media... and, yeah, I still side-eye myself about that sometimes. LMAO

I thought the Governor's close encounter with a piece of glass was much worse. I had to turn away from that. Can't handle eye stuff. ...yeah, there was a bit of grossness on that front last night, but I didn't turn away. I kinda wanted to, but I didn't.

I was also particularly grossed out by Noah's face literally getting peeled off by walkers in that rotating glass door. I also recognize that last night didn't affect me that badly because I knew what was coming, so I really cannot pass judgment on anyone who walked into that unawares. That shit was brutal, hands down.

That shit was brutal, hands down. I admit I probably would have been a complete mess if I hadn't peeked into a leaked script. I had an inkling of what was coming (I knew all about issue #100) and knew I needed to be as prepared as I possibly could. I don't usually look at spoilers. I'm glad I did this time. I didn't watch it alone, though, and I was the only one who knew what was coming. There were no screams, no tears. Just a half-hearted "aw, not HIM." I also noticed that when they showed the audience's reaction to the "surprise", only one woman covered her mouth in shock, nobody else even flinched. Maybe it didn't have quite the impact on viewers they intended. Or maybe everyone already knew.

See, the governor's eye thing didn't affect me at all. When Glenn first died (or everybody thought he did) I was laughing hysterically. Last night? Whew. I used to think, "Oh, nahh, they won't show that on TV." Last night... They showed that and more on TV.

I hate to see you give it up. I say that because right now starts some of the most interesting and cool storyline arcs from the comics, but that's also just my opinion. This is something I've seen expressed in a few places today, but I'll be honest, even if it is true of the comics, I'm just really not sure I trust these showrunners to translate it in a satisfying way. I think it would be one thing if there was any sense of there being an end game, but I also know that a) that runs counter to Kirkman's whole deal of "hey, wouldn't a never ending zombie movie be awesome", and AMC has no other cash cow like TWD right now, so they're going to ring every last drop they can out of it for as long as they can. My frustrations with the show have been building for a long time now--it has HUGE issues with pacing, the characterisations are often erratic, the cast is way too bloated, and it tries way too often to cash emotional cheques that it simply hasn't earned. I've kept watching because there was always just enough good stuff there, especially in their visual storytelling (and some truly amazing cold opens) that I could slog through the clunkier parts. But between all the stupid fake-outs with Glenn last year, the frustrating garbage with Morgan, then the cliffhanger and last night's culmination (which was essentially just one final Glenn fake-out for the road), all my good will is exhausted. I've invested enough time in it over the years that I'll continue to follow reviews, and I might check in for the occasional episode on the off-chance that this is indeed a turning point for what has essentially turned into misery porn for me... but I guess I'm just too cynical, and too aware of the strings, to keep up the habit full time anymore. And my husband will be happy that he doesn't have to flee to the other end of the house to avoid coming into the barest contact with it. lol Sunday nights are fun.

And my husband will be happy that he doesn't have to flee to the other end of the house to avoid coming into the barest contact with it. lol Sunday nights are fun. I felt that way about halfway through season 5. I had been loosely still following plots and what not, and decided to check out the premiere just to see if this Negan fellow was going to be compelling enough for me to watch the show again. I am not very squeamish when it comes to extreme violence and gore. So that wasn't my problem. I went into it being as open minded as I could be. Since I am not as invested in the show or the characters as someone who continued on after I quit watching... I knew I wouldn't be very fair. I guess I had let myself get too hyped up by the reactions on twitter. I was expecting some kind of heart wrenching and brutal masterpiece. Unfortunately they didn't earn back a viewer here. (For the record Hannibal became one of my favorite tv shows after one episode. As straight up evil and terrifying as Hannibal was as a character/villain, I found him so compelling and was even rooting for him at times despite wanting him to be caught. I am sure my love of that show scared my fiance a bit at the implications of how I could enjoy a show and character like that so much lol. Not sure what any of this has to do with The Walking Dead. Guess just some perspective on how I am sometimes a person that can find evil characters and extreme violence entertaining. When done well. )

If you're a show watcher only, or didn't catch up yet then don't read. At this point after his meeting with Alpha, he's incomprehensible to me. He could have assassinated Rick, taken over the Whisperers, kill or leave Dwight to die etc. I can't wrap my head around this guy. Rest in Pieces to Lucille though.

Negan is such a walking conundrum, and it's for those very reasons. None of the show watchers know that yet because, at the time in the comics the show currently is, NONE of us did. Negan was a horrible, scary, terrible person period. And he is. Truly. But some other facets come out over time. LMAO Comic reader too so spoiler. Yeah, I have no idea what long game he's playing here... or if he even knows, at this point. Really a wildcard right now. I kinda like it.
I'm also living in fear every issue that this will be "the one" where he finally bites the dust. Argh.
The Lucille scene was oddly sad. LOL
Are you following the "Here's Negan" backstory at all? Kirkman's currently penning it and we get four pages of it in the Image+ previews magazine monthly. Because of course he's milking Negan for all he's worth, but I'm a weak woman and subscribed to it, too. LMAO Random sidenote - if you read Letter Hacks, I was actually printed in Issue # 157 (the issue that is Part 1 of 6 of the current arc). I was the chick with the incredibly long-ass letter about Negan that said I read the entire comic series after the Season 6 finale and then proceeded to ask a few questions about Negan and the Saviors that Kirkman proceeded to not really answer at all, because Kirkman is Kirkman.

Plus i wouldn't worry too much about him since his leather coat gives him +100 DEF. Now Rick is who i worry about, Kirkman might kill him off in order to kickstart a Carl's 'maturation into the leader' arc. Lol was this you at the top? *snip* and dat Kirkman response

I've honestly about had it with TWD.
For one thing, the show just doesn't sell its premises very convincingly. Apparently there must have been an "Assholes, Sadists, Psychopaths, and Morons" convention happening somewhere between Atlanta and Washington when the zombie apocalypse hit, since that makes up at least half of all the people that the main characters ever seem to run across. Plus, even though basic resources are still plentiful, the population has drastically shrunk, and everyone has figured out how to kill the zombies, people are still running around in the woods shooting each other and fighting over territory even though half of these conflicts could be solved by somebody just getting in a car (which are still in abundance, it seems) and driving away.
They also keep playing with the idea that Rick and some of his group are crossing a moral line with their own violence (which they are, IMO), but then they'll turn around and make people who are more trusting and altruistic look stupid. If the Alexandrians were out scouting for people to bring into their community, how the hell did they overlook that big pit of walkers? Because aside from finding that pit (which they did simply because the script said so and not because of any discernible logic), Rick's group has frankly been no help at all to them, especially after picking an unwinnable fight with Negan's group and presumably now leaving the entire community at Negan's mercy. And given the situation in the real world, it seems especially unhealthy right now for a popular TV show to be playing to the absolute worst forms of paranoia and fear of the "other."

And in typical Kirkman fashion, he tap-danced around really answering anything. Which I expected going in, but I was still amused. Dude is like a real life version of an online troll.

After reading the faux reboot mini event for "Invincible" and it's conclusion a few months back, yeah he's a huge troll. I'm still salty.

So a question to you comic readers. Is there any more explanation than on the show on how the Zombie virus/outbreak happened? There had to be a Patient Zero? Wish they would explain a bit more.

Sadly, there is not. Heck, the show has tried to explore that more than the comic has - for example, Dr. Jenner and that whole CDC in Atlanta thing? That was made up by the show - never happened in the comic. Pretty much, the outbreak simply happened and nobody knew how or why... just started having to find ways to survive and, now, try to reform society somehow. That was part of my major disappointment in "Fear the Walking Dead". It was supposed to show the start of the outbreak, which it did but then went right into "fall of civilization" mode, without anyone really asking any questions or trying to research this thing. Then, it felt like society fell in less than a season and now it's just a less interesting version of The Walking Dead - West Coast edition.
