Huh. So I was listening to the theme (as one often does) and I realized we don't actually have a thread for this. Why the Elder Gods would allow this to go unaddressed for so long I do not know. But it's time to rectify this and Test Your Might! Discuss any and all games, movies and merchandising tie-ins! Also characters and lore and krap. Replacing any and all C's with K's optional. My favorites- Characters: Raiden, Shang Tsung, Noob Saibot, Sindel, Mileena, TOASTY! guy Game: MK9 Crossed over Kharacter: Kratos. Mostly because Sony ensured he never went out like a bitch. A rare example of good Executive Meddling. Random thing: Cooking with Scorpion!

I remember picking up MK vs DC to support the team during the uncertain future with Midway, and I LOVED spamming my friends with The Flash and Green Lantern! LMAO!
Then I checked out the 2011 game, and it was phenomenal! It was like the series returned home and reminded us of what makes it stand out from other fighters.
Will pick up Mortal Kombat XL when I get the PS4 Pro.

I've liked most of the Mortal Kombat games, wasn't a fan of how stiff the characters were in the 3D era though.
My favorite characters are: Reptile, Sub-Zero, Kano, Mileena, Skarlet, Tanya (MK X), Johnny and Cassie Cage. I mained Kano, Mileena, Sonya, and Skarlet in MK 9, while in MK X I mained Kano (Commando), Mileena (Ravenous, love her new design!), and Tanya (Dragon Naginata). hoping that Kano, Mileena, Skarlet, and Tany make it into the next MK game, whenever that happens.
One thing I absolutely love about the 2 recent Mortal Kombat's is that they both had a really great story for a fighting game, and MK X having those pre-fight banters.

I remember being incredibly excited for Mortal Monday back in '93. I still have my pin somewhere.
My brother and I played MKII pretty much every night until bedtime. Once he managed to fluke out like ten wins in a row against me and we decided to let him win the next forty to see Noob Saibot. After the fiftieth win and the music started playing, the game crashed. We had the SNES version, and I guess it was a common glitch. We eventually tried again and got the same result.
I have "Select, A, B, right, left, down down, up, up" permanently burned into my brain - I think it was the "kooler stuff" menu from MK3, that had the option for one button fatalities. ...a quick google confirmed this.
I didn't like the shift from digitized actors to blocky polygons in 4, and not just because I had a bit of a thing for Liu Kang. It seemed like a huge downgrade in quality, but I guess YMMV on that one. We didn't play much of MK4, but I do remember being surprised by Reiko's ending.
I have both of the live-action movies on DVD. I saw them both in the theater on opening day.
I saw every episode of the live action series Mortal Kombat: Conquest (Konquest?) EXCEPT for the final one, because I was sick. They never re-aired it, at least on the channel we watched it on. My brother excitedly recapped the show for me. It sounded like a rather explosive cliffhanger. Sadly, nobody else watched Conquest (admittedly, it was quite terrible) and it was cancelled.
Deception's Konquest mode was the best thing. I played that for HOURS.
I haven't played much of the newer games (or any new-ish fighting games, tbh) because I'm pretty much restricted to offline play due to awful internet, and once I've finished the story mode there's nothing much left for me. Great games, though.

I love Mortal Kombat, and overall prefer the fighting gameplay of these games over, say, Street Fighter. I haven't played MKX though since they released the Predator. I do have the season pass though, so I should go and at least give the new DLC characters a try. IMO I think between NetherRealms' 2 big franchises, I think Injustice has the better singleplayer and story mode, but Mortal Kombat has better actual fighting (I'm still pissed off that after 2 whole fucking games, they refuse to put a dedicated block button in Injustice).
Since MK9 retold the stories of MK1-3 with its new plotline, I would like to see future MK games do a retell of the 3D games' plots. The 3D games played like ass, but I will say that I was interested in the storylines if nothing else. I know that MKX kinda-sorta homaged the plot of MK4 by making Shinnok the main villain, but I actually would like to at least see characters introduced in the 3D games (Havik, Onaga, and Blaze especially) make an appearance in a GOOD game. All this said though, I absolutely loved the Konquest mode of Deception, with all of the exploration and side stuff.

Mileena (Ravenous, love her new design!) One thing I absolutely love about the 2 recent Mortal Kombat's is that they both had a really great story for a fighting game, and MK X having those pre-fight banters. Eh, no thanks to the new design. The lips thing is stupid and looks stupid. Beyond that- ok I'm going to be honest here, I enjoyed and have no problem with the stripperific look of MK9 and I'm not a fan of moving entirely away from that. "Realism" got it's skull shattered in an X-ray and its spine pulled out its asshole in the fatality. I encourage new costume designs to keep things fresh and I would also support costumes running the range of practical to fanservice so everyone can get what they want. But I'm not down with the toned down thing alone. The pre-fight banters thing is a great addition. That's the one thing I kind of miss in MK9 now that I've seen it in MK-X and the Injustice games (neither of which I own I just watched the story/related vids on Youtube). I never actually played any of these games, fighting games are simply not something I'm interested in (or good at). That said, I appreciate the design and style of the MK series. Characters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Johnny Cage, Shao Khan, and others, are all interesting to me both in terms of design and backstory. Yeah, I am also interested primarily for the lore. I have moderate-low interest in fighting games but I really suck at them. I have never been able to do a fatality until MK9. I can't do combos more complex than three buttons. And I spam stun attacks and/or teleports like mad. But I got into the story and world of MK enough to enjoy most of the media. Games wise the original trilogy (and thus the updated story of that in MK9) is the pinnacle of the series for me. I think beyond that it got a little too crazy, characters got lazy and they needed to do the in-universe reboot that they did. I can't say I'm a fan of where they're going with the new one either. Too many classic characters dead, and this "new generation" ain't doing it for me. I can appreciate an actual narrative with consequences so you don't just repeat the same damn thing every time but I still like me my classic MK.

I didn't mind the stripperific stuff too much either, but I personally like their characters having better proportions (And Faces!) along with their outfits being less fanservice-y (I still feel like plenty of the outfits in MK X have some fanservice to them). My only problem with the pre-fight banters is that DLC characters seem like they get less, and some lines get recycled. I'm in agreement about liking the lore and story, even the stuff from the 3D era. I also hope they bring back some of the more popular characters from those times, although I'd mainly like to see Ashrah, Kira, Hotaru along with Li Mei and Sareena returning as fighters.

It looks so bad though! I guess YMMV but I think it's just awful. Do they even explain how she went from full Tarkatan mouth to that unholy in-between? I don't recall it being mentioned in teh story mode, but in all fairness I did only watch it once. I think if you wanted Mileena to be a legitimate character and not just a gnashing psycho, you would have to address the mouth (although the case could be made that she just accepts it and covers up) but I think the better answer to that is she masters enough sorcery to do an illusion or minor shapeshifting so she appears normal until it's time to let the teeth out. I think the more recent webseries had that as an innate ability tied to her anger (although they played fast and loose with the canon, with her being a more legitimate twin to Kitana even before Outworld's invasion). Anyway, the point is all teeth or temp no teeth, but not this halfway shit. And yeah, still disagree on the fanservice. The Edenian girls did it best in MK9 and there the order is Mileena > Jade > Kitana. Proportionally... eh. Some variety would be good (although Mileena should mirror Kitana, being a clone and all) but again I think they went to far in MKX. And yeah I agree some faces could've used a bit of work. Unmasked Kitana for example. Ironically she conveys emotion better when she's masked. The only other flaw of MK9 is the lack of playable boss characters. On PC you can mod this but on console you're screwed. That would truly make it the complete Mortal Kombat experience for me.

The funny thing with Mileena was that during Deception she somehow managed to pass herself of as Kitana, even though her veil at that time was a tad transparent. eh, agree to disagree on Mileena's face and the fanservice. I heard that the MK 9 boss characters in even have Arcade endings.

Unpopular opinion, but hear me out: I think it's too gory.
Like I get that MK is supposed to be over-the-top with its gore, but I feel like the ultraviolence should serve as the cherry on top of a match rather than just slapping casual disembowelment into every other move.
It makes it lose its effect. Fatalities are supposed to be climactic and shocking ends to a match. That's what made them fun. But here, by the time the "Finish Her/Him" pops up, it's like "well, what's one more blade through the face when we've already seen 7?"

Pre-order or else you won't have Shahrokh Khan! For the celebration of MK11, I played some MK9 after a few years and I've become very clunky... the highest I came:

Nice.
MK9 was a trendsetter for the cinematic storymode in fighting games and I think Injustice 2 set the bar. They have come a long way. Can't wait to see what they do with MK 11.
Gameplay looks a bit slower/weightier, but I kind of welcome that.

If I take out the messed up progression to unlock stuff, I frickin' love this game. Dividing offensive and defensive bars really enhances the flow of a fight, because you allways have the potential to dish out damage right after an escape. I also love Frost the resident mecha-girl weeabo edge-lord, who is pissed off because no senpai is noticing her. You show them girl.

Don't get me wrong, I've played games that has blood and gore but MK is FAR too much for my tastes. And the storyline and characters are terrible for me to pick up the game to play it.

And the storyline and characters are terrible for me to pick up the game to play it. It does a great job at it, for a fighting game. And I do like some of the characters. Some more than others. I think most of the designs are great and the new Kitana is such a cutie patootie, it's downright criminal. But yeah, the gore can be overwhelming and it feels even more so, for me, when it's towards the MK girls.
