I thought it would be interesting to start a thread like this.
We know ,judging by what we have seen, that this is a post apoc./shattered world setting where humans have a hard time surviving. But what else? What do you think the story will be about? When does it take place?Where is this planet? What happened to Earth? What exactly are Freelancers? What is a shaper storm? Etc. etc.
The questions are unlimited so this is a place to speculate to your hearts content.
Here are my theories: -This is way way way far into the future where humans have spread to other systems.Pretty obvious. -Earth is probably no more.Just a dead rock no one can go back to.A place of legend and no one alive has seen -We have met no aliens so far. Kinda like in the Expanse TV show where it is scifi with no aliens.I ve only watched S1 btw. -We used Terraforming Tech to shape the planets we wanted to settle in but that tech screwed us over making the planets more hostile...Maybe that shaper storm is actually a byproduct of terraforming.
That's it from me so far.
Edit: Just wishful thinking here but I wish this is set in the Mass Effect Universe. But in a way that it doesn't matter. Maybe this is so far off in the future ,like thousands of years after the OT.Or maybe after Andromeda.Like if people travelled to an entirely new galaxy .but yeah...Wishful thinking.

Are we actually sure this isn't Earth?
A theory I was toying with if this was Earth was that aliens had arrived to terraform the planet for colonization only we damaged their terraforming engines, leading to a runaway terraforming system destroying our civilization..
Otherwise, I agree with the idea that this is terraforming tech run amok. It's either ours or belongs to an advanced alien species. I saw stone ruins in the demo, so it'll be interesting to find out if this is a human planet or not.
What I want to know is if this "Fort Tarsus" is an isolated outpost or if it's part of a bigger group and there are other human holdouts out there.

I like your idea about humans ruining the terraforming tech ofnthe aliens who invaded us.Reminds me of that cancelled scifi show, Defiance.Which had a cool concept but not executed well.

I even feel like it could be a ringworld. With the wall actually going from side to side.

My feeling is that the human group are colonists, cut off on a planet by betrayal of Governement. Freelancers are folks with little to lose and who have the specific set of talents to wear the suits without frying their CNS. I honestly don't think there is much more to it.

While it could be Earth, that would be too much like Destiny, which is based on future Earth.
While it could be a ringworld, that would be too much like Halo.
It's both easier and safer, in terms of minimizing criticism for being derivative, to just make it be some other planet.
(And if they really wanted to f--k with us, we'd find a very ancient and weathered statue of a Wolf with many Eyes, suggesting this might be the homeworld of Thedas in the very, very distant future.)

I like the idea that Fort Tarsus is on another planet that humanity was attempting to terraform, only for their world "Shaper" tech to go haywire and start messing with the ecosystem, turning it more hostile. Basically, it's a story about survival at that point... survival from the very thing that was supposed to help humanity live here. Who knows? Maybe the world didn't even have a breathable atmosphere beforehand.

Are we sure this isn't a hidden MEA sequel and we're not stuck on Havarl with the monoliths gone haywire again?

Maybe the world didn't even have a breathable atmosphere beforehand. Maybe its Mars. It could be interesting if it were another body close to Earth, but we don't know what happened on Earth. Admittedly that's the plot to Technomancer but this is better.

Looking at the video again I can see some ruins all over the place, and the ruins look way too old to be a recent thing.
That would suggest that if it's on Earth then it's a "long after Humanity fell", or else if we're on another planet we might be dealing with a lost ancient civilization(A shocker in a BioWare game, I know =P)

I'm curious if this is a planet we're on, are we actually stuck there? Are the people capable of space flight?
Are we capable of atmospheric flight beyond the jets of the Javelin?

I saw an interview the creative director (I think it was him?) of Anthem gave to a YT presener where he said that "humans are at the bottom of the food chain" something like that.

My thinking is still on terraforming disaster. We arrive looking to colonize, but there's either infighting or conflict with the unexpected native population, resulting in a crash and an out of control terraforming process, which is what I think that "Shaper Storm" was.

We do see a intelligent "native" presence of sorts. Maybe. The 'scrafs' or whatever they were called? The ones who shoot at the PC after they dodge the Fiend- I mean strange new reptile/gorilla hybrid monster. Same guys who presumably shoot down the big robot walker that looks like the same model you can see walking about back at home-base. Hard to tell if they're biological, machine or just wearing suits themselves but they clearly don't like us.

I personally like the terranova route. Humanity went back in time but found out it was an alternate timeline/universe. Would be pretty cool if they did that but I doubt it would happen
