Interesting article about the upcoming expansion from IGN: www.ign.com/articles/2017/07/12/how-xcom-2-war-of-the-chosen-ramps-up-threats-and-options?abthid=5965ed5614d152372e000006One of the things that I noticed in the article was that there is a new "photo booth" feature when you finish missions: "And of course, I’d be remiss to not discuss the Photobooth feature. At the end of every mission, you can hit the photo button, which lets you pose your surviving squad members in front of the map they were just on against a propaganda poster-style backdrop and write in your own text to create a poster that will appear around the Avenger. I had fun just pushing the “randomize” button and seeing what it came up with, but when I have more time I intend to come up with some good ones."

While I know that XCOM isn't really known for it's elaborate narratives, I think I want to hold off on any significant spoilers for this.
I am really curious to see what Palvonis Interactive (the Long War devs) are working on for this DLC. Fingers crossed for the return of SHIVs, or the ability to 'free' some of the lower level aliens like the skirmishers.

I would love to be able to hire on more scientists and engineers. I played a bit of the campaign a while back, and what stopped me was my inability to make more contacts, to counter the dark project. Purely due to the fact I couldn't staff my comm room, and build anything else. I was an either/or situation, and that really bugged me.

Purely due to the fact I couldn't staff my comm room, and build anything else. I was an either/or situation, and that really bugged me. I'm always short on engineers, but I have found that you really only need about half a dozen scientists or so. The diminishing returns from having more seems to make it pointless to get more.

Hmm… so out of the three new resistance factions, which one would you say is your favorite?
Reaper
Skirmisher
Templar
Obviously, I am going to endeavor to recruit all three onto my squad as I hunt down and kill each one of the chosen, but from a gameplay, and background lore standpoint which would you say is the most interesting?
I would have to say Skirmishers for me. Not only is the faction representative voiced by Michael Dorn (Commander Worf of Star Trek fame), but you can also turn a skirmisher into a mini alien ruler, giving said solider a reaction turn for each enemy attack. Aside from that I personally find their backstory of being liberated, former ADVENT forces to be one of the more intriguing plot hooks.
Sure the Reapers and some members of the XCOM resistance would want to cleanse the Earth of all traces of the alien oppressors, but are they planning on genociding every hybrid human on the planet? Seems to me that such a goal would make such people just as bad, if not worse than the Elders. The concept of the Skirmishers, and how they canonize ADVENT forces as potentially being more than just mindless puppets helps flesh out the world more. Plus, if we can free ADVENT soldiers, and repurpose alien influenced AI to fight for us, then maybe we can do the same for the various alien species under the Elders' thrall.
The Reapers' representative may be voiced by Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi, also of Star Trek fame), but their faction seems to be insular and too backward thinking. Even if they liberate the planet there is no going back to the way things were. What the future holds has to account for the alien elements as well as humanity.
The Templars, I don't know too much about, but it seems to me that they are a bit cultish/elitist. In a world ruled by alien overlords, a resistance group hoarding psionic knowledge that could potentially benefit everyone seems a bit selfish to me. That being said, we know practically next to nothing about this faction so maybe they have a legitimate reason for keeping their powers and techniques to themselves, so we'll see.

Tbh all of them look great and about equally as interesting to me. Same here, all are really interesting and I'm loving the concepts and gameplay mechanics at work in each faction. It's more from a lore standpoint that I defer to the Skirmishers. First goal for me once War of the Chosen drops is going to be fielding a squad of each of these specialists plus a SPARK or two, leveling them up to maximum potential, and then sending them to wipe out an entire ADVENT/Alien battalion. I'll be playing it with Long War 2 active as well, so I'm betting it's going to be pretty crazy.

Also, is this a separate expansion, or something integrated into the main campaign?
Nothing yet on what Palvoins Interactive is going to add for War of the Chosen, though I suspect something is in the works. When asked about any potential updates to Long War 2 for the War of the Chosen expansion, the lead developer for the mod said he couldn't talk about it due to NDAs. As for the War of the Chosen expansion itself, it will be integrated into the main campaign, there will be new missions and story points that come with the DLC, but it's not a standalone add-on.

Yeah, I was rather stupid the other day and pre-ordered both War of the Chosen and Total War: Warhammer 2 on Steam, despite it not being a pay day at work. Oh well, at least now I have those things paid off now.

But let me know how that works out for you! I rarely pre-order games but where I did, I've been disappointed only once (DA2). Also, I will comment, but I'm usually slow with playing a new game or new expansion, so others will probably beat me to it.

I don't trust Firaxis anymore to roll out decent out of the box stuff anymore and won't buy at the release price point. Didn't buy Xcom 2 at release neither - I couldn't be arsed with timed missions and deeply disliked the campaign of Xcom1. I got xcom2 in the last steam sale and rage quit the campaign after half a day. Was about to uninstall, but said "fuck it" the Long War mod was quite decent. Downloaded that and a handfull of other mods and enjoyed the game immensely with that. No Firaxis game without mods is my takeaway - they just don't deliver fun for me vanilla.

Really liking the Lost as a neutral 'map modifier', it would be amazing if you could use them to swarm one of the Chosen or an Alien Ruler and have them do the dirty work for you. On a side note, I love the Fulton Harness mechanic for gathering supplies, I hope you can get a version of that for alien corpses as well. I am currently using a mod called extract corpses that does basically that, but its really cool to me that Firaxis is taking inspiration from those mods and working them into the vanilla game.

steamcommunity.com/games/268500/announcements/detail/1440442886466647497Really liking the new skill trees. It's no longer a binary choice, and the resource you use to level up your soldiers now comes from playing tactically on missions. Things like flanking targets, attacking from elevation, etc. it all directly translates into more ability points to spend on leveling up your solders. If you want you can spend all of your points on a single squad mate and unlock all of their skills, but that would be putting all of your eggs in one basket. And that, coupled with the new fatigue mechanic is bound to make for some tough choices on squad composition. I am eagerly, and dreadfully, waiting to see how the Long War 2 mod will handle these new features.

Not sure I like the "bonds". But we'll see. In a vanilla sense I think they are interesting from a role play perspective, but as far as modding goes, I think they are a solid foundation that the Long War developers can build off of. I am willing to bet that once the 29th gets closer we are going to get a huge article detailing all the updates that will incorporate all the War of the Chosen changes.

Not sure I like the "bonds". But we'll see. The game already keeps track of soldiers bonding under the hood. You can see soldiers with close bonds interacting on the Avenger, visiting each other in the infirmary, chatting in the barracks, etc. I play with a mod that gives a squad small bonuses when you stock it with soldiers who have formed close ties. With the down side of an increased chance of panic and becoming shaken if anyone on the squad is KO-ed, killed, or captured.
