Mods, if this needs to be moved, so be it. But to me IWD and its sequel were simply Black Isle (RIP, gents) tuning the BioWare Infinity Engine for more combat focused gameplay - and they kicked some butt with this approach. BG I and II of course had the more in-depth stories, but if you wanted to lay about with yer two-handud sward and fireball the crap out of some fookin' goblins, this was the series for you. My favorite memories are: (1) The Kuldahar soundtrack by the very gifted Jeremy Soule (KOTOR, Skyrim) - I felt that in this one piece he had outclassed every piece of music ever made for a Final Fantasy game to that point. I just realized he also wrote the soundtrack for Secret of Mana for the SNES - that makes a lot of sense. (2) Defeating bosses or gangs of mooks by giving my biggest, most badass tank fighter "Roids;" that is Potion of Frost Giant Strength + Haste + Chant + any other non-cursed potions in the war chest and having him charge in solo like a maniac. (3) Defeating IWDI's final boss by shutting down his spellcasting with Power Word, Silence* and sending the tank brigade in to put him on ice. This was removed in the expansion pack. *

I've always been fond of IWD1 and IWD2 and they are in my GOG library since forever. I love their epic story, their memorable battles and their astonishing environments. I know that many people criticize them for not providing "enough RPG options", because of the party creation, the pretty linear story, the lack of banters and interactions, and so on, but I can say that it's not entirely true. IWD1-2 just provide a different RPG experience when compared to BG games but they still provide a good one. According to your class, race, alignment and so on those games can play out totally different from a playtrough to another, and those elements have way a greater influence than they have in BG. I am not trying to compare BG and IWD, neither I want to say which one is better, I am just saying that they are very different and that every RPG fan should play both sagas at least once, just to see two different faces of the same genre, but still two beautiful faces.
Oh, and IWD2 was also the first game based on the 3rd AD&D rule set that I played (I think that NWN did it before, but I bought it only 2 years later), therefore I quite remember the nice change that it provided and the fun that I had in discovering the new game mechanics.
