SO... is no one going to comment on the three ability thing we've seen? In the gameplay trailer, you can see at the bottom that there are 3 abilities mapped to LB, LB+RB and RB. Wether or not these are specific for a javelin type or additional equipment, I'll leave in the middle, but what are the odds that we'll have the possibility of having lots of skills because of levelling up/having multiple equipment in our inventory, but only being able to use 3 skills in combat? I ask mainly to get the discussion about "only 3 active skills" out of the way now, so that we won't have to have this one time and again once the game releases

It could be a placeholder UI, but more like the same combat-design to me. Whether it was designed for Anthem (but used for Andromeda) or vice versa - we'll never know.

I think it just works. Three seems limited but also means it'll be easier to balance sets of abilities. Three is easy to relate to muscle memory instead of having to get used to a dozen skills.
Also, in anthems case, I'm guessing the abilities are directly related to the equipment options you install on your javelin: left arm, back, and right arm. The l1+r1 is most likely the item on your back - in the gameplay video this was the mortar or cluster missiles. We also see the colossus player do a right handed smash to the ground like a nova, which could be r1 activating a blast device equipped to his javelin's right arm slot.

I have to be honest: I'm not a big fan of the 3 ability limit. It felt overly restrictive in MEA, even with the 4 different sets of favorites. That being said, if Anthem puts more emphasis on gunplay while relegating abilities to auxiliary or support roles, then it could work out fine.

-(_ANTHEM_)-
Halo 5 didn't need that many abilities either.
If Anthem is truly a hard core sci-fi game, then the Freelancers only need armour, weapons and consumables. Sensors, life support, coms are integrated in the combat suit. External gear is attached to the suit which leaves your hands to use a weapon of your choice.
This game is streamline for combat shooter action. The demo clearly shows the point and shoot philosophy.

The senior/lead gameplay/combat designer of Anthem (Corey Gaspur) is the same one has ME3 (mp from what I understand) and ME Andromeda. Why can't it be that he just like it that way considering he's been designing combat like that for 7 years now?

Also keep in mind those are just your 3 changeable abilities as far as we know. Each javelin will probably have its own melee attack, movement abilities, consumables, etc. That are tied to other controller buttons and just dont need an icon to represent them in the ui.
Think to me:a's melee: you can equip an omniblade, sword, hammer, dagger, biotic amp, or cryo gauntlet, all of which have varying effects, and those aren't shown in the ui either.

Well considering it's an online multiplayer game all the time just like Destiny, you can't pause the game with a weapon wheel or ability wheel. Everything needs to be real time. And everything has to map out well on a controller since the majority or gamers and sales comes from consoles

There may not be skills as such. There may only be weapon modes and a way to cycle through weapons, assuming you can even do that -- since you can in Destiny, it seems a fair bet. Then each weapon may only have a limited number of modes.
Keep in mind that some portion of the controls have to be dedicated to jetpack flight. There will at least be one button Jump/Dive and one for Accelerate/Decelerate. Direction and climb/descend are probably on joystick/mouse. Point being that this reduces the total number of buttons available for abilities/weapon modes, at least on controllers.
An interesting question is whether you can use a weapon while in flight. My guess is no, since making flight a non-firing mode allows all the controls to be dedicated to flight. However, their might be a fixed reticle gun that fires in the direction you are looking/pointing, so that you can use SPACE/trigger to fire. This is basically how jets work in Battlefield.
If there are skills, I hope they attach to the player, not the Javelin. And they might only be skills that increase the functionality of a suit, like, fly under water skill that you have to unlock. Or track beasts for hunting skill, that gives you a glowing trail to a beast you are hunting, but isn't an active combat skill. We'll have to wait and see. Anything is possible.

It looks as though you shoot while jet-jumping (ascending or descending), but as soon as you go into full flight-mode, your weapons holster automatically. I will be interesting to see whether BioWare will add any interesting features to leveling...

I much prefer a limited ability bar. I think of it like a trading card game: you're building your hand/deck out of a selection of abilities; each with specific strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately the goal is to find abilities that both work well with each other and with your playstyle. A card game isn't much fun if you have the entire collection of cards available at all times - it just becomes a game of hunt and peck to find the ability you need amongst the dozens you have. I admit 3 is on the low side though, I usually prefer 4-5 minimum, but well see how it plays out. Like I said before, the ability slots probably dirwctly correlate to your left arm, back, and right arm equipment. For example the mortar/cluster missiles were back mounted, but the nova ground slam may have been something equipped to the right arm - a shockwave device or some such. If it is setup that way, it will feel ergonomic and natural in battle. Put a flamethrower on one arm perhaps, a middle launcher on the back, a repair device on the other arm, there's your 3 abilities. On top of those, you still have potential default melee attacks, equipped guns, and movement abilities.
