"you can lead a horse to water but you cant make it drink "
it doesn't matter what you do some things are just too stubborn to save
"cant see the wood for all the trees"
indicates that there's no accounting for stupidity
"not all that glitters is gold" ignore the shiney shiney its probably just shit

I do not have a dog in that fight. I have no interest in that subject Bless your heart. This can be sincere, but it usually means 'that's so stupid, I do not know what else to say'.Not in a month of Sundays. NeverA word to the wise is sufficient. You have made your point. That's enough alreadyI heard that phrase over and over again during my first two years at a small, Baptist university in central Texas. Everytime I said, "No, I wasn't born in Texas. I was born in upstate New York," or "I'm Catholic." I heard that phrase. The intent on how they say it will result with a.) getting unwanted sympathy or b.) "F*** you! I know what you mean..."

Here's something funny: in my homeland, we refer to testicles as "eggs," and "to make an omelette" is an euphemism for lesbian sex. You can imagine my levity when I discovered the English idiom "You can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs."

Another german one: "Wasser in den Rhein tragen" - Carry water to the Rhine = doing something redundant UK equivalent: Carrying/Taking coal to Newcastle (major coal mining/exporting region) Other Phrases: The Dog's Bollocks (the best/high quality) Fall/Knocked arse over tit (dramatic fall) Bugger off (milder form of fck off) I'm knackered (I'm exhausted) Dressed up like a dog's dinner (overdressed for an occassion/event) he/she's got a face like a bulldog chewing a wasp (an aesthetically unattractive person or facial expression)

Here are a few more from my native language.
"den Ball flach halten" literally: to keep the ball low meaning: it may sound like a football related instruction, but telling people to keep the ball low means that they should stay calm and not get overly excited or pissed off.
"den Schuß nicht gehört haben" literally: to not have heard the shot meaning: if you haven't heard the shot, you're pretty ignorant and don't know what's going on.
"Schwein haben" literally: to have (a) pig meaning: if you've had a pig, you've just been very lucky and/or avoided a disaster.
"den inneren Schweinehund überwinden" literally: to overcome your inner pig-dog meaning: if you overcame your inner pig-dog, then good for you! By discipline and willpower you have resisted the urge to be lazy (or some similar temptation).

And here is something practical for everyday use. The German language has a ton of compound words that are used to point out that a person is a "Weichei" (literal: soft egg, meaning: wimp). The first of those words was "Warmduscher" (warm showerer), but by now there is an ever expanding list including, but not limited to "Schattenparker" (shadow parker), "Sitzpinkler" (sitting leaker), "Chefgrüßer" (boss greeter) or "Süßfrühstücker" (sweet breakfast eater). These words are generally not meant as serious insults, they are more of a playful ribbing, and if anyone tosses one of those words at you, the socially accepted reaction is to reply with one of these terms in return. Of course, there is a similar list of terms to admiringly state that someone is a "Hartei" (literal: hard egg, meaning: badass). A small selection of these words would be "Ampelignorierer" (traffic light ignorer), "Chefverbesserer" (boss correcter), "Kaktusstreichler" (cactus petter), "Pitbullzurückbeißer" (Pitbull backbiter) or "Russenmafiabescheißer" (Russian mafia cheater). Possibilities are nearly endless.

Soooo since we had many things from Germany, I tried to come up with Austrian ones - no idea if they are really specific to Austria though. Please enlighten me if you know. "Aufgwamt is nua a Gulasch guat." / "Aufgewärmt schmeckt nur Gulasch gut." / "Only Gulash tastes good if heated-up." It's not gonna end well if you get back together with your ex. "Bessa ois an Sta am Schedl." / "Besser als einen Stein auf den Kopf." / "Better than a stone (thrown/dropped) on your head." Don't complain, you could have had it much worse. "Treff ma uns auf da Bluatwiesn." / "Treffen wir uns auf der Blutwiese." / "Let's meet at the blood meadow." Seriously put, this would be a vicious threat meaning you would like to beat someone. I only heard that one as a joke though. "Da Watschnbaum woget scho gewoitig!" / "Der Ohrfeigenbaum wackelt schon gewaltig." / "The slap-tree is almost falling!" If you say that, you're very close to slap someone in the face. Again, it's more of a joke than anything. "Net gschimpft is globt gmua." / "Nicht geschimpft ist gelobt genug." / "No scolding is praise enough." There are several uses for this one I guess. Basically you can say it if you would have expected some kind of praise that you didn't receive. "Wos liegt des pickt." / "Was liegt, das klebt." / "As soon as it lies, it sticks." That one stems from playing cards. Meaning you can't take back a card you already played to substitute it for a better one.

Den Tag nicht for dem Abend lohnen. - > Don't praise the day before evening. Pretty self-explanatory, don't praise the day before it is over, ugly stuff may happen later in the day Die Schäfchen ins Trockene bringen. -> To bring the sheep into the dry. To secure your profit. Morgenstund hat gold im Mund. -> Early morning hours has gold in mouth A really old saying, it means that working in the early morning hours is especially profitable. ( I don't agree by the way. ) Die Flinte ins Korn werfen. -> To throw the shotgun into the corn. It means that you should not give up easily. In der Not frisst der Teufel fliegen. -> In an emergency the devil eats flies. Which means in an emergency you have no choice but to use what you have, even if it sucks

My mother always says that "What you don't have in your head you have to have in your legs", meaning if you are forgetful or just not paying attention you usually have to do more work later. Needless to say I heard it a lot growing up... This is actually pretty cool, it's a pretty common saying here in Greece and I had no idea that other people had that one. XD Anyway, here are some other common Greek idioms: - Do bears shit in the forest? - Usual reply when someone asks a pretty dumb question. - The mare shat in the threshing floor - When you dismiss a piece of news as pretty unimportant. - The mountain groaned and gave birth to a mouse - It can be translated as 'Much ado about nothing'. - 'Dis examartein ouk andros sofou' - literal translation: Erring twice is no wise man's (trait). Commonly: Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me - Go to the crow/ the devil (either word works) - when you want sb to get off your back. Can be translated as 'Bugger off!' - He's become a cowbell - When sb's waaay drunk. ETA: "You've got my liver/ balls swollen! - Used when someone's become unbearably annoying. - Don't speak of noose in the hanged man's house - Some subjects should best be avoided. - Different are the eyes of the hare and different are the eyes of the owl - when people put different value to the same thing.

"hark is that a taxi I see" someone just said/did something utterly dumb and should be feeling so ashamed they need a taxi home, often shortened to just shouting "taxi" when indoors
"kiss your mother with that mouth", "well I think the airs getting a little blue in here" ~ both mean your language is unwarranted and you should tone it down

Something I've noticed is that Swedish "curses" tend to be a lot more innocent than similar expressions in the southern part of Europe. Here are some of them:
Go to where the pepper grows - Bugger off (very far away!) Go to the woods - Bugger off Pull something old over yourself - Bugger off You are behind the bob (as in fishing bob) - You are an idiot S/he was born in the vestibule - S/he is an idiot (This one is usually more used in negation, like "S/he wasn't born in the vestibule") S/he is dumber than the train - S/he is an idiot

"you should take a long walk off a short pier" "go play chicken on the motorway"
both are polite ways of telling someone there too stupid to live...
"were you born on the motorway?" often followed with "cos that's where most accidents happen" or "you must feel special most things don't get to crawl out of the abortion bucket" a less polite way of telling someone there dumb as fuck
