"you should take a long walk off a short pier" "go play chicken on the motorway" both are polite ways of telling someone there too stupid to live... "were you born on the motorway?" often followed with "cos that's where most accidents happen" or "you must feel special most things don't get to crawl out of the abortion bucket" a less polite way of telling someone there dumb as fuck We have a similar saying here in NY. Though its actually 'go play in traffic', meaning you are too stupid to live, and should go play in a place that will most likely get you killed. Thus improving humanity, without you being a part of it. aka, bugger off

Ref. to the other forest and trees idiom on page 2, we have similar one but with a different meaning: Ei näe metsää puilta = One does not see the forest for/because of the trees Meaning: One concentrates on the details only, and doesn't see the big picture. And some of my favourites: Saunan takana on vielä tilaa. = There is still room behind the sauna.Used as a threat or warning; letting someone know that you may have already buried some enemies behind your sauna, (often at the end of the yard near the forest), but if he/she keeps behaving this way, you will still have enough room for another corpse out there. Oma lehmä ojassa = Your own cow in the ditch.Meaning: having vested interest, or your own intrest in mind. I.e. you're more likely to go and help, if you see it is your own cow stuck in the ditch, not your someone else's. (Cows are bad climbers..) Tässä on koira haudattuna. = There's a dog buried here.Meaning: there is something suspicious about this. This is actually an old literal translation from Swedish, "Här ligger en hund begraven." That in turn is said to be a translation of the German "Da liegt der Hund begraben." that is literally the same thing. However, linguists have tried to find the actual story behind it, and the closest explanation is that 'Hund' could've been actually 'Hunde', that meant 'treasure, robbed treasure' which was then buried. But that explanation only explains it partly. It apparently refers to the assumed treasure being buried, but there wouldn't really be a treasure at all, but just a dead dog instead. So, the buried spot looks suspicious. I just find this interesting, as this is one of the idioms that are still in everyday use but has a long, tangled history. We've got a lot of old idioms from Swedish and German, reading through those previous posts even here. Like the mice dancing on the table. Easily explained by historical reasons, for example the popular trade routes, sending students abroad to study (hundreds of years ago), the Swedish rule, etc. providing lots of loanwords.

Arktinen I wouldn't be surprised if half of the indigenous Finnish idioms were related to saunas... I'm pretty sure you also have a saying (in relation to hockey) that is basically "It doesn't matter if we lose as long as the Swedes don't win"! Aside from the one with the buried dog I also recognized the one about not seeing the forest because of the trees.

Wenn dem Esel fad ist, dann geht er aufs Eis tanzen. - When the donkey is bored it goes dancing on the ice. The meaning of this saying is that boredom or idleness is bad because it makes people engage in dumb and dangerous activities. Its similar to the English saying ''Idleness is the devil's playground''.
Das letzte Hemd hat keine Taschen. - The last shirt does not have any pockets. Which means, if you are dead earthly goods wont be of any use for you anymore, so don't hoard stuff, use it and have fun now.
Wie die Made im Speck leben. - To live like a maggot in bacon. Describes people who live from the wealth of other people, in other words: leechers.
Was der Bauer nicht kennt, frisst er nicht. What the farmer/peasant does not know, he does not eat. Describes people that never try anything new and stick to their old ways. Note: In German there are two words for eating - '' essen / isst'' means eating in a civilized, orderly manner, ''fressen / frisst'' means eating like an animal. Also back in the day peasants and farmers were called the same thing, ''Bauern''. Nowadays ''Bauer'' means farmer.

It is quite interesting to see that some similar idioms can be found in various languages. We French also use images like "the tree that hide the forest", "the mountain that gave birth to a mouse" and "when you do not have a head, you have legs".
I have to say that I enjoy the many ways Swedish can invite you to bugger off.
Some more: "Il m'a pris pour un lapin de six semaines". = "He mistook me for a six weeks old rabbit." He thinks I'm stupid/naive.
"C'est pas sorcier" = "It's not wizard" (I know it's weird, it is for me too. "sorcier" is only used as an adjective in that specific idiom. Its prime use is to serve as a noun, which means wizard. I'm no grammatical specialist though; this might have a better explanation) It's easy as pie.
" Tiré par les cheveux." = "Pulled by the hair" Far-fetched.
"Avoir un polichinelle dans le tiroir" = "To have a Polichinelle in the drawer" To be pregnant (it's a bit old-fashioned). Polichinelle is a puppet character from the Commedia dell'arte.
- "Une réponse de Normand" = " A Norman's answer" An evasive answer, which can mean two opposites things.
And the last one makes me laugh because we both try to pass the buck: "Filer à l'anglaise" = "To take an English leave To take a French leave = leaving without permission or notice

Rhabarber. - Rhubarb. Describes senseless drivel. Can be used several times in a row for extra effect, like ''blah blah blah''. The "extra effect" is the very point of it, because you can no longer tell if someone says "Rhabarber" or "Barbara" in that case, meaning it's nonsense anyway. Which reminds me of this little vid (slightly OT, but still fun): Sorry it's all in German, but you aren't missing much in any case, it's more about playing with words and the perversity of German grammar than an actual story.

So many variations of phrases for mockery, comedic teasing (UK/Ireland/Aus/NZ):
Taking the piss Taking the Mickey Taking the Mick Taking the Michael
Usage: Are you taking the piss? They really took the piss out of him. Any of the above can be used instead of piss.
Note of caution: Are you taking the piss? can also be a defensive/aggressive statement from someone either paranoid or angered by others real or perceived mockery.
So it can be the prelude to a confrontation or fight. It depends on whether the tone of delivery is hostile or friendly/jokey.

"Brass monkeys" - Used to describe cold temperatures. Shortened version of "Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey"."Pissing it down" - Often used to describe heavy rainfall. "Bits and bobs" - Used to describe miscellaneous items, similar to "Odds and ends"."Put wood in t'hole" - Yorkshire expression meaning "close the door".As I've never heard the following anywhere else, nor found any other examples whatsoever, it seems the sole invention of my dad; "Do the shacklin'" - Asking someone to close the curtains.

Here's some finnish idioms: Tyhmästä päästä kärsii koko ruumis = Stupid head makes the whole body suffer. Doesn't really need explanation. Some with the ass since it seems to be a global thing: Vedetään perseet olalle = pull ass onto the shoulders ie. get piss drunk. Perseaukinen = open from the ass ie. out of money. And last but not least: Kaikkeen tottuu paitsi jääpuikkoon perseessä koska se sulaa ennen kuin siihen tottuu. = you can get used to everything except an icicle in your arse bc it melts before you get used to it. Ooh, I'll add a few: Ei auta itku markkinoilla = there's no use in crying at the fair/market. It's pointless to complain. Juosten kustu = taken a piss while running. Describing something that you feel has been hastily and shoddily done. Half assed is a fairly close equivalent. Kyrpä otsassa = a dick on your forehead. Basically means you're pissed or just in a general foul mood. Sataa kuin Esterin perseestä = it's raining as if out of Esteri's ass. It's raining really hard. Kadota kuin pieru Saharaan = to disappear like a fart into the Sahara desert. Used for when someone or something seems to vanish into thin air. Suksia vittuun = to ski into a cunt. To fuck off, either as telling someone to do so (suksi vittuun), or describing something like "I got right the fuck out of there in a hurry". Juosta pää kolmantena jalkana = to run using one's head as a third leg. Used to describe rushing somewhere or to rush to do something. Nussia pilkkua = to fuck a comma. Pilkunnussija if describing a person. It's the equivalent of grammar Nazi, except that it can be used more broadly to apply to any subject where someone is being super particular or demanding about minute details.

Here in Chile, we have A LOT of slangs and phrases. Most of them are bad words or curses and i would need a whole thread for those, so here goes the most used: Weon = (depending the context) friend, Buddy, asshole, jackass, idiot, etc... Wea = (same as above) a thing, stuff, a testicle, idiot, etc.. Culiao = Fucker Conchetumadre = Mother Fucker as for phrases, here are some: Buscarle la quinta pata al gato = trying to find the most minimal error in something Al tiro = ASAP Echar la corta = to take a piss Yapo = C'mon!

Huh, we have some of the same ones here in England... that's weird? Like the back of a car is always referred to as being "the boot". (Carboot sales are when you flog stuff from your boot in a field. I went to a right load of them as a kid).

Some Icelandic ones. Or I think they count as idioms.
Að vera alveg úti að aka - To be completely out driving. When you have no idea what you are doing.
Að svína fyrir einhvern- To swine in front of someone. When you cut off people in traffic.
Rúsínan í pylsuendanum- The raisin in the end of the hotdog. The highlight of the event/thing.
Engin verður óbarinn biskup - No one becomes a bishop without being beaten. You don't get far without some pain.
Að fá sér smá í tánna - To get a little bit in your toe. Drinking some alcohol.
Að gæta einhvers eins og sjáaldur augna sinna- To protect something like the pupils of your eyes. When you protect something really carefully.

Usually told to someone who is rushing through things to calm him down. We bunnies do make awesome steeds though - ever seen a horse do a trick-jump like this? I think not! Perhaps I should add an idiom or two: The one who digs a hole for others often falls in it himself - When plotting against others there is always the risk that it will backfire on you. The more chefs you have, the worse the soup becomes - Involving too many people in projects will often lead to chaos and a worse outcome.

"Paljon mahtuu puhetta maailman, tekoja sopii aina odottaa" - "Many speeches can be heard throughout the world, but one always has to wait for deeds."
And something I was told many times as a child. "Isäs ei ollut lasimestari" - "Your father wasn't a glazier" Often said when you are blocking someone's view and they are trying to watch TV for example.
"Vaihtelu virkistää" - "Variation refreshes"
