Here's the T-44, the often overlooked missing link between the T-34 and the T-54. It was developed and fielded late in WW2 and saw very limited service on the eastern front and in the far east against Japan. More info here

Tanks used to be lame, until late generation Panzers were made. Later Russian tanks, much better than western ones. hate to tell you but the chally2 pisses all over it 72 shots active rate of 10 rounds a minute, top speed of 125mph (on a steep downhill with a trailing wind) not to mention 2 separate machine guns on top of the main armament, and of course a stronger engine and chubom armour, but tanks aren't actually that good, they don't stand up well to incoming fire (only small arms /side arms) and whilst the chally could literally get hit by an rpg 7 suffering nothing more than a paint scratch any modern armament would torch the thing, they are all universally vulnerable in the belly where little armour is used and none of them can be driven without tracks.... a better vehicle would be the scout car of course its got tiny little pea shooter and only seats 2 guys, but theres no reason it cant be scaled up and come with runflat tyres as well tanks will be good when someone figures out shielding but until then they have too many vulnerabilities for their costs

I don't see how anyone can still be a fan of battle tanks in this day and age. They're suffering the same fate as the large battleships, they're slow lumbering targets and with todays anti-armor technology tanks have become a death trap, even with the most sophisticated reactive armor.

Modern tanks also have passive(jammers) and active defenses(systems like trophy that shoot a projectile at an incoming round) on them. yes reactive armour has bene around since the mid 80's and its only been marginally improved, however that improvement means it can no longer operate as part of a close working team nor can it operate with infantry in support, so its actually a backwards step in that regard.... its also dangerous and susceptible to emi/emp and its only good for the first time someone shoots at you if they shoot twice your still fucked, unless they use a sabre hesh or du round in which case just the one will do the job .... tanks are like apc's great for playing bullet sponge and useless for anything larger..... when a single grenade on the tracks can take your tank out of action for a minimum of 15 minutes and one in the air intake vent will render it totally inoperable its just a nice white elephant, better off having cheaper things that move faster and still pack a punch, a 2 man buggy can be fitted with a 75mm cannon, you have long ranged artillery like the AS90 that shoots further can be remote operated, is capable of traversing a deep lake and so on.... tanks aren't even good for ramming into buildings, for that your better off with a tow missile and you can mount them on a quad trailer or jeep.... better off ditching tanks really surface ships are a whole other matter though if you could build one that was submersible capable of stealth running being heavily armoured and still able to surface and be armed like a battleship then its would be better, carriers are great so long as nothing gets too close to them so they need battleships and other escorts to provide it with help the real problem is being able to securely link up the entire interdiction capabilities, a problem that once overcome could be scaled down to once again make tanks worthwhile although they would need to become bigger and more capable as well.... really tanks are pretty much screwed unless your talking about unconventional warfare and then it becomes a great thing for the guys inside (so long as they buttoned up before the nbc threat was deployed) and even that has its problems cos its only good for a few days at a time ..... there just big loud and showy and ok in certain situations

Here's a new modern main battle of tank, the Turkish "Altay", which is slated to enter active service with the Turkish Land Forces/Türk Kara Kuvvetleri next year. It was named after General Fahrettin Altay who commanded the 5th Cavalry Corps in the final stage of the Turkish War of Independence(against Greece). Nice vid about it:

Vid on the largest tanks ever designed, from those that were actually built(like the Char 2C above) and those that never left the drawing board, such as the Landkruezer P.1000 The AML is an armored scout car/light reconnaissance vehicle Larry-3

Hate to break it to ya, but the later-generation Panzers were following up on a proud heritage. And that's because the early generation sucked to the point you could penetrate it with a STANDART ISSUE VZ.24 RIFLE. I laughed. They better have at least 2000mm effective versus KE AND HEAT on the front of that turret, because the angling is something the Germans learned simply DOESN'T WORK.

Here's a rather unique tank, the Chinese Type 63A amphibious light tank, the only modern one of it's kind. It packs the largest cannon of it's type too, a 105mm rifled gun. The Russian Sprut-SDM1 is an amphibious air-deployable tank with a 125 mm cannon that is going to be introduced this year.

They're suffering the same fate as the large battleships, they're slow lumbering targets and with todays anti-armor technology tanks have become a death trap, even with the most sophisticated reactive armor. Christ alive you'd think you would know better. Tanks in a Infantry support role are still the ideal. They still do the job they did eighty years ago and still do it well, while anti armor is on the downswing infantry support, fire support and fire direction are still arenas the tank beats out any IFV, APC or ISV. Anti armor will continue to shift towards infantry sure but having command and control in field via infantry acting in concert along with armored elements will persist. Also combining the firepower of infield artillery, along with the mobility of IFVs is hardly a useless feature on a modern battlefield. I suppose I'll just leave it at this because again you figure anyone actually trained in infantry combat would realize it's utilities even if they never saw a battlefield themselves. ._. I've fought alongside a armored column, combine it with out and infield artillery, proper air and infantry coverage and they are unstoppable, capable of piercing through even the most powerful hardpoint you can imagine. *Cough* like that deathtrap of a airport.
