EA's Executive VP Patrick Söderlund has given a brief interview about Anthem. According to him "It’s a social game where you and your friends go on quests and journeys. It’s a game that we’ve been working on for almost four years now, and once we launch it next year I think it’ll be the start of a ten-year journey for us."

I am really curious about how much of this open world Bioware has actually built at this point.

To be honest I wished they challenged them to create an open world full of meaningful content rather than "finding a way to not sacrifice visual fidelity". I think this interview can give us a good insight about their priorities for this game: "It took time to get that done but, you know, with some smart investments in technologies, some smart design from our art team, we got there. I would firmly say that I haven’t seen any open world that looks as good as this, ever, which is kind of what we wanted".
Not a single word about story, content, characters and so on... just "visuals".

Not a single word about story, content, characters and so on... just "visuals". They are entering a competitive market, so they have to differentiate. There are people who care about story, but there are way more people who care about visuals and gameplay. The gameplay trailer has two clear messages: 1) this is a game that people who like Destiny, The Division, and Borderlands will recognize and get excited about, and 2) it's better than those games, at least insofar as visuals go. Now my guess is that, relative to similar shared world action games, Anthem will kick ass in the story department. But that's a relative comparison and not really saying much, because those other games suck at story. So, you'll have to decide if that is a glass half empty, or a glass half full. I think that the chance that it will be as deep in story as ME or DA is very low, and even lower if you expect Anthem's storytelling to be better than DA or ME.

Story stuff can come later, closer to launch. But first, to get people interested, you have to get them excited. And the easiest way to do that at E3 is by showing gorgeous visuals. If the game looks fantastic in the few-minute slice you show people, they will be intrigued later on and follow more information as you put it out. It's really hard to convey "amazing story!" in 5 minutes or less. Especially when the game is still over a year out. They also probably want to avoid any DAI issue where they show something at E3 that ends up not being in game. So keeping some of that close to the vest until closer to release makes a lot of sense. But notice how even with very little to go on Anthem makes the top 5 (and the top slot on a lot) of the "Best of E3 2017" lists across the internet? That's exactly the positive hype they want, and they got that by showcasing how amazing the game looks.

I think that the chance that it will be as deep in story as ME or DA is very low, and even lower if you expect Anthem's storytelling to be better than DA or ME. I am not very hopeful. If EA wanted a game which was focused on story they would have asked BW to create the typical kind of game that they are used to release. If their focus on this game is on action and shared world they'll try to give players a reason to choose that kind of gameplay rather than play solo. No matter how good can be the SP experience they will make sure that it will be a minor feature in the game. Otherwise many people would play it like a "classic" RPG, but this game is not meant to be like that. Here is why I have really no expectations about it and I think that everybody who is interested in a solid, good, single player experience should do the same.

For a while that may be true, but the way they treat SWTOR, is by cashing in on the SP story after the MP got used up. Solid, good SP experience also differs from player to player. Just exploring a pretty world that is rather thin on the main story-line but have a smattering of peculiar encounters can be engrossing and the grind done right, with thematic events and pug experience done right will make for excellent solo experience, at least during certain periods of playing the game.

Once again, Patrick from EA is trying to pull a fast one with his "social game" as if it's something new.
Meh... we all know ME:A's wonky cinematics, at launch & we already have co-op social games in ME3MP & MEAMP.

At first yeah, but after the expansions, raids, iron bannner, POE, and Trials were added, I never got bored. Plus I just enjoyed playing with my clan and help new players get through raids

Yep, Bioware is back blowing its own horn again. That is one thing they are good at and that is why I never trust what they say any more.
It is about time they realise that the player decides if the game is good or not and not some Bioware personnel trying to sell the game. Anyway if this is a 10 year game then there will not be many games that I will be playing from Bioware in the near future apart for DA4 if there is one.

Not a single word about story, content, characters and so on... just "visuals". After Andromeda, can you blame then? Yeah, some people had issues about story, content and characters, too. But they were very few among the people who had problems with the visuals. Andromeda was torn apart and mocked because it's visuals. So it's clearly what matters to most people. Personally, I had tons of fun with Andromeda. But I don't really care about fucking animations.

I hope the visuals bear out 10 years. It is an extremely lofty target for an on-line game. They better have budget to repaint the roses blue should red get stale.

From what I've read from other sources, the meaning of the "Ten-Year journey" is not that Anthem 1 will be played for 10 years as is, but that will include years of expansions, DLC, and sequels. It is very likely that the "Ten-Year Journey" includes Anthem 2: The Antheming. Destiny was described as a 10-year journey for Bungie as well, but that includes a sequel in Destiny 2.

Some people might like to play other games, too. So while they enjoy ME3MP and MEAMP, it is possible they want more than two games to play with friends. I played Left 4 Dead with friends, but also other games like Call of Duty and ME3 MP.

Destiny 2.0 Cannot freaking wait!! It's funny cause Bungie gave the same 10 year line about Destiny, though I do believe the story will be miles better and way more coherent since it's from Bioware Montreal, the current Bungie is a shell of it's former self

I think expectations for SP should be no higher than, "SP is just degenerate co-op, with a team of 1." If they prove me wrong, that's great, but I'm not holding my breath. Now that said, it could be a really fun experience playing a team of 1, lone wolf style. That's how I played a good chunk of Destiny. I didn't expect a great story and I was not disappointed.

My hope is that they will still make the standard RPGs that we love and that this will introduce us to a new genre of gaming. Create a world, story, lore, characters and watch them grow, evolve over many years. Think about DA2 - Instead of trying to cram 10 years into one game stretch it out in a deep and meaningful way over a number of years.... new adventures/stories/missions come out 6 month or every year. For example building on the DA2 idea, have a dlc or even several dlcs revolve around what happens to Bethany or Carver expand for example and continue to grow the story to create new pathways and directions for new characters and old- solve the problems in Starkhaven or quash the evildoer trying to overtake Carvers LI's family in Nevarra - hopefully you get my drift (and clearly Bioware is not going to hire me as a creative writer!)
Anyway - not sure this game will be of interest to me and would have loved an new RPG IP as long as DA and ME keep coming out with new games, I am happy!

"It’s a social game where you and your friends go on quests and journeys...."
a.... what ? Sorry, it was really my reaction the first time I read the article... like others said, certainly just a subtle way to say "MMO" but make people believe it's a new concept, I suppose... also... "I would firmly say that I haven’t seen any open world that looks as good as this, ever, which is kind of what we wanted."LOL. So pretentious... that kind of way to do marketing campaign is so wrong....
