So, Anthem is for 'you and your friends'. But I don't have any friends! This is not a play for sympathy I do have some actual friends, just not those who play online. When I get some time to play, I want to very easily match-make with people to play with, but not have to mess about or be pestered by people 'looking for group'. Basically, I want the PUG matchmaking mechanics to be really sophisticated so that even a loner like me can get a game when I want (and only for so long as I want) with no strings and no hassle. In terms of matchmaking, is that too much to ask? Do such matchmaking tools exist? Are there any games that do it well?

I haven't played Destiny or The Division in a while but from what I remember, you can match-make with other players for story missions and dungeon like content (dungeon content is generally always a search for group scenario, unless you have a pre-made group).
The way it worked was, you play the story content first by yourself (or with a friend) and then the option to play that mission again at a harder difficulty became available, where you could either try it solo or look for a group who are doing that same mission.
As far as I know though, general exploration was left to you having to just invite yourself or randoms to a group. There was no searching for a group for that type of experience.

I hear you. At my age I have very few friends who play games and none that play online games. I very seldom play any co-op games for this reason. The only time I do is when I play with my youngest daughter. We play Left4Dead 2 all the time. We also play some mmorpg's, but all the ones I play can be played solo and have the ability to pug, but that doesn't always work out well.
I don't know of any games that does what your looking for.

Similar problem, most of my friends don't play the same sorts of games I do. I had this problem in Destiny where a lot of the higher end content has no matchmaking (For a reason) until I finally bit the bullet and looked for groups online.
The main thing is that you really need to find groups that are looking to do the same things you want to do. So they need matchmaking for each activity. I'm not sure a general exploration matchmaking system would work, unless they had some way to compare what parts of the map players had explored... That might be doable actually.
Destiny has it set up where you can invite friends or use matchmaking for Strikes (Missions designed for a 3 person team). But you can't use matchmaking for the single player story missions or the 6 person Raids. Generally it works. There are 3rd party sites that help you find people for Raids, which is understandable because you generally need people to have mics and know the content to do them. For the sequel, they're trying out a system called "guided games" which will connect solo players with preformed groups of 4-5 for Raids. We'll see how well that actually works in practice.
You know, do you think it's possible EA decided to push back the release date in part to give themselves time to react to Destiny 2's features and see what worked?

-(_ANTHEM_)-
An impossible task, I say. My situation is similar.
One way of achieving "our goal" is for the game to provide AI units for you.... good luck with that, as Bio's AIs suck dry titties since DA:I.
A second possibility is that the popularity of Anthem is so high that finding players at any time of the week is easy....*cough*, "cough*. Of course, a game's popularity will take a dive sooner or later, then it's tough titties.
Somehow, I doubt that Bio's "me and my friends" mantra will work. Certainly not to the high numbers of players EA/Bio have in mind. And, for this game to succeed, micro$transactions must be generated as a constant revenue stream to pay, at least, the expected "permanent" support team.
I suspect that the "friends" are actually internet players that happen to find an empty spot in an an active fire team mission = sane as co-op play in ME3MP and MEAMP. And, EA wants to keep tight control of the game. Expect to feel an iron grip on your short and curlies.

Yes, yes, I am starting to think that blood ties are the way to go. First, marry a gamer, then shoot for twins or close-apart siblings. 12 or 15 years down the road you are all set.

I'm okay with the FPS pub server methodology. Go lone wolf on middle tier servers (not the most popular, not the least -- assuming we even get to choose). Notice a compatible player, run into them a few times at the same time of day, make the approach, exchange friend info if they accept, shrug if they rebuff and move on. Rinse and repeat.
Yes, you do get burned by a few assholes that way, but for the most part, I've made a lot of online friends that way, and in some cases, some actual face-to-face friends. However, it requires effort. You actually have to git gud at the game and not be a burden. Who will friend you if you suck? And I don't mean you can't make friends as a noob. There is a noticeable difference between a noob that is skillful but inexperienced and a noob that's a klutz. Noobs who have potential, you bring under your wing. Noobs who are klutz's you avoid like the plague. The secret to making co-op friends is to pull your weight and contribute something useful to the team.
I saw this exact dynamic play out in Destiny. While the assholes make a lot of noise and stick in your memory, they are way outnumbered by the decent people who are willing to lend a hand when you're a noob, and even more outnumbered by the players who will just leave you alone, as long as you leave them alone.

One game that for a while had great pug mechanics that was suitable to my shy and reclusive nature was Blade and Soul West, back when they had "green" leveling dungeons on GF. It was X-Server, picked you up from anywhere in the world, and dropped you off back after the dung, took up to 6M, on Dailies and with cute cosmetic rewards, opened to all levels, but was basically impossible to wipe if you had 2+ peeps. Second "level" (blue" dungeons were impossible to wipe with 4, but took up to 6. Then, yeah, they had the 6m/4M versions of the harder raids. The most important thing, the lower levels of difficulty did not have the sections where you could get lost, screw up the platforming, mob avoidances, etc. You just run in and killed things, thanks goodness. I find that most stressful part of the raids are the mob avoidances, platforming and shortcuts that everyone "should know" and the frantic pace at which people take it to fit as many as possible for the "speed runs". So, as long as you did not do Purples, it was all fast, fun and good. Sure, once gearing wave passed it over, it was hard to find peeps to play them, but managing the loot to make them somewhat attractive, would be nice. Then you don't have to do hard stuff. ME3MP really worked on the same principle. You could play Bronze and Silver for a couple of hundred hours and have fun, so the queues were always lively, and there is no way to get lost etc in the ME3MP. So, you don't have to be a really good player to have fun and don't have to force yourself on the players who play gold and platinum. Any perfect pug system imo will allow everyone play on their comfort level, have fun and, well, not talk to anyone/search for guilds/make MMO-friends Honestly, if you pay for the game, it's good to have the content that addressed to your level of a player maintained and promoted, not just have the team working on the hard stuff. There should be lots of fun, easy stuff that is also rewarding for the completely casual folks not in a hurry.

From what was mentioned on Warner's Twitter about matchmaking, he couldn't release info but he mentioned that he thought the person would be pleased with Anthem's answer to matchmaking. I believe I can go find the tweet if you want.
Also, the game was said to be solo-friendly except not in those words. A lot of tweets talking about solo being an option for gamers. Still, with our only facts being gameplay and a couple of interviews, all we unfortunately have to go on is their tweets and what information we can get.

I don't like online. my college friend tried to make me play DoTA 2, and I was like, this is boring. I don't play video games to socialize, i play them to get lost into the story worlds. But online games come with so many string attached, requiring talking to other people during games that just ruins the story for me.

If this game is executed well, I can imagine playing with most of my ME3MP friend list. If they don't drop me lol... I didn't buy Battlefront, didn't buy MEA, not planning on buying BF2 unless the reviews are amazing (general EA boycott)... I guess I'm not that good a friend Plus, when I do play 3MP now it is on Invisible on lolorigin, because solos and liking the challenge of randomness in a tired old game

As an example, Vermintide has excellent matchmaking. If you pick Quick Match, it will find you a lobby, and it searches in tiers of distance from your area, finding the lobbies closest to you first. You can start your own lobby and make it public or private and invite your friends. Or you can use the lobby browser to manually pick a lobby you like. And the lobby is actually in-game - the characters are hanging out in a tavern inside the city where the action happens. If you don't want to play with others at all, Vermintide's bots are pretty competent and use the same equipment you have on the respective character. Vermintide is an indie game... I'm sure that a big-publisher-funded game like Anthem can do at least as well.

I don't have a lot of playing time, and the time I do have, I prefer to play 'alone', as the rest of my job/life is social enough for me. Playing is quiet time for me, myself and I. As such, I do enjoy the focused gameplay element that the MP of andromeda delivers, but I abhor having to listen to others, let alone talk. I really hope Anthem caters to this. Let me find a good PUG, fast and easy. And I'll be happy. Destiny was terrible for this. I didn't even have to try raids.

Even though this comes from a criminally badly written article, the quote from Aaryn Flynn is enlightening with respect to some of the motivation for making Anthem a co-op game experience:
Truth be told, I got into multiplayer FPS because my son started playing one and wanted me to play with him. So, guilty as charged.

So if this is an on-line multiplayer game (which I played once for about 10 minutes) how do companions work - banter, romances, personal quests? Wouldn't any story or dialogue be pretty much mission based? I did play Diablo on line for 10 minutes, but I just did my own thing anyway... the others just seemed like a distraction - I didn't team up with anyone. I just don't get how it all works
