They actually work on it?
It's like how does Google does 300 code releases a day (or whatever the number is). They do the same thing as everyone else, they just do it better, and more automated, and therefor faster.

Genuine inquiry: So how do companies who do manage matchmaking well, dealing with all those issues do it? From my experience, they learn from making mistakes in prior games and then build upon it in future ones. Sometimes they get away with improvements with patches, but experience is the key in my opinion. I think a good example from learning to improve does show with World of Warcraft, in the base game you had to spam the general channel to make groups, then they made gathering stones to create a group, then they introduce the group finder tool, and finally progressed all that to looking for a raid. Of course there are less variables for if you meet the gear level requirement they just pick the people at the top of the line for each of the holy trinity, but they do keep progressing the system
