I don't care if the rules of the universe are science, fake science, or magic, as long as they're consistent within that universe. Oh, absolutely. The cautiously optimistic approach here is that there may be a great backstory to what's happening, a rich lore for the world, and even if it's not entirely clear how the jet packs, power suits, ridiculously powerful long range heat seeking mortars, environmental storms appearing in a blink of an eye, etc. actually make sense, it doesn't matter. They just do. It's a weird world with some odd tech. Or a wizard did it. Now let's focus instead on the big picture story and the small picture stories happening within it. But I think Laughing Man may have the right of it - this reeks of an early disclaimer of "rule of cool will be triumphant", and an intentional decision to rule out internal consistency if it gets in the way of whatever they happen to want to add tomorrow. Bioware does have form on this already with some elements of the DA and ME franchises - although I do appreciate that it's not easy to get perfectly right.

I don't care if the rules of the universe are science, fake science, or magic, as long as they're consistent within that universe. Basically, from what they're saying, I'd say that it's most likely going to be consistent with the rule-of-cool. That's my understanding anyway. You see "awesome" things and you aren't suppose to get "bogged down" in asking for explanations.
He specifically referenced "the science of it," so I think what he's getting at here is that they won't be spending a lot of effort linking the technology and forces of the game to real science compared to Mass Effect (Which was often more pretense than actual grounding in scuence, but the point stands) So I think there will be plenty of explanations and consistency within those explanations, just not technical explanations.

ME had very little consistency even within its own "science" and lore, ME2 was more like a comic book than a sci-fi story for example, the thermal clip thing, Shepard's "resurrection", and other issues.
And in MEA we have a single Asari commando deflecting back (which isn't really supposed to be a thing anyway) a full salvo from a warship with a single biotic bubble. Compare that to what was established during ME2's "long walk" about the biotic prowess of two indivuduals which are likely supposed to be stronger... Yeah, not very consistent tbh.
So if that's considered the "consistent" approach that tends to adhere to sci-fi traditions, well, Anthem is probably going to be shit when it comes to these aspects. But hey, I fully admit not being interested in that game to begin with, so to each their own I suppose.
Like I said, ME mostly only strove to maintain the pretense of consistency with actual science. However, look into the codex or planet descriptions and the amount of detail they put into explaining the technologies and such is significant. Don't make this something it's not. He isn't saying "Hey, we're going to toss out any pretense of consistency or logic." He brought up Star Wars because Star Wars prioritized story and characters with the technology mostly serving the plot and being in the background. That doesn't mean there won't be consistency, there just won't be a focus on technical details as there was in ME.

I don't care if the rules of the universe are science, fake science, or magic, as long as they're consistent within that universe. I'm a little more lenient. I'm okay with "mostly consistent," with the exceptions being rule of cool.

Is anyone really shocked that a Divison/Destiny clone isn't going to have much in terms of explained lore?

Unless there's hot alien chicks, no romance is necessary.

Oh man, science fantasy sounds strange. Imagine if real life were like that, instead of being hard sci-fi. Why, just this morning I had to dodge five people who were trying to hand me detailed schematics of their phones. How weird would it be if none of them knew anything about how modern tech worked, and had just talked about their day instead!

Wait, did he say that Mass Effect was the "hard sci fi" IP? Okay. So Anthem will be more fantasy like than space magic and shagging rubber forehead aliens? Oh boy. Mass Effect worked hard to maintain the pretense of being based in real science. I expect this game will still wrap its ideas in pseudo-scientific jargon, but probably put in a lot less effort to maintain ties to real science. Worked as hard as Babylon 5 and Star Trek at least... I still think that's a mistake though, Mass Effect always felt more like Star Wars to me. However... This is interesting. It sounds like they won't really bother explaining things...that the world you will be in is lived in already. I approve of that, as it's one of the things I like about Space Operas. I hope it translates though for the game, and we get the character drama required for that action.

I don't have a problem with genuine scifi fantasy but "we don't worry too much about explaining stuff" doesn't sound like that. It just sounds like no effort has been made for internal consistency/logic. That's a mistake from my perspective, engaging with your world, making sure everything is as cogent as possible adds an authenticity to things. Adds texture. This sounds more like "Our focus groups told us our target audience likes these Cool ThingsTM so we added all of them! That's how this works right?"
This makes me less inclined to try the game.
