Since I found the original PST all but unplayable even with several mods (Widescreen mod, font size change etc) I bought this and I wasn't disappointed. The game still has all the old magic, and the visuals were very carefully enhanced so the game keeps its visual identity. Of course they couldn't increase the resolution of the old sprites and maps without completely reimagining the world, so they didn't do that and there's noticeable pixelation if you zoom in too much, but they used graphic effects to minimize this and I can say I'm very pleased how well this plays on my 32" monitor at 2560x1440.
If you're an old fan, this remains true to the original in everything that counts but it's so much more playable. I have two parallel installations (modded original and EE) and had the best setup to compare. There's a world of difference in playability but the world, the characters and the story are as good as ever.
If you never played this classic, this is your opportunity. Be aware, though, that there's a lot of reading to do, since dialogue is extensive and almost none of it is voiced. I understand this is not for everyone, back in 1999 and even more so today, but the story and characters make up for it IMO. I still don't know any other game where you could have somewhat convincing character interaction about philosophical themes.

I've recently played through the ENhanced Edition, as it had been years since I played the original. Was not disappointed. It's still one of the greatest cRPGs ever made.

Finished the game. It was almost as emotionally engaging as it was 1999, everything that could be expected from a playthrough that wasn't the first. The complexity of the dialogue wasn't quite as high as I rememebered it to be, but still gave me significantly more than most games made since. I wonder what people consider a good ending... not that any gets better than "bittersweet".
Also interesting: the main point of the ending was telegraphed very early in the game, so while you probably don't exactly like it, it fits the story and you don't resent it as, say, ME3's.

The ending is melancholic true but not without logic. All in all Planescape is a gem one i am really glad i stumbled upon somewhere around 2000. I have it on Gog ( i own all the old black isle games on GoG) But i am also glad we have this EE since i am 2 lazy 2 mod the game. And since i havent touch the game in more then 10 years i kinda look forward 2 all the reading and all those woderfully written npcs. Still the best game i have ever played, nothing comes even close to it not even bg2 (which i also love very much) The Nameless One: FALL-FROM-GRACE. Fall-From-Grace: Your voice - so you have found yourself at last? The Nameless One: YES. THE PRICE WAS... HIGH. THE COST WAS MANY LIFETIMES, MINE AND OTHERS. Fall-From-Grace: The price of such thing is seldom measured in copper. Are you still... The Nameless One: I AM STILL THE ONE YOU KNOW, BUT MY PERSPECTIVE HAS... CHANGED. I HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN YOU, IF THAT IS YOUR FEAR. Fall-From-Grace: No, that was not my fear. The Nameless One: I CANNOT REMAIN HERE FOR MUCH LONGER. MY PUNISHMENT CALLS, AND FATE AND TIME SHALL SOON BE HERE. I WILL RETURN YOU TO SIGIL IF YOU WISH. Fall-From-Grace: That is not my wish. I *will* find you again, no matter where in Lower Planes you will be - just as you shall be able to find me. The Nameless One: IT MAY BE A LONG TIME. WHERE I AM BOUND, TIME IS NOT MEASURED IN YEARS, AND THE CRIMES I COMMITTED ARE STRONGER THAN ANY CAGE. Fall-From-Grace: No cage shall separate us, and no Plane shall divide us. Keep thinking of me, and we shall meet again. The Nameless One: I SHALL NOT FORGET ALL YOU SACRIFICED FOR ME. Fall-From-Grace: Just do not forget me. The Nameless One: TIME LAYS WASTE TO ALL THINGS. BUT I SHALL FIGHT IT AS LONG AS I CAN. Fall-From-Grace: Time is not your enemy. Forever is. The Nameless One: PERHAPS SO. FAREWELL, GRACE.

I see I'm not the only one who likes Fall-From-Grace's farewell best. Perhaps this is because it indicates that there is a future beyond the punishment, however far away it may be? I have always seen it that way. Of course it also helps that I like her best of all the companions (which I've heard is unusual).

Not to mention that in your travels you do meet people who have managed to escape the Blood War, so TNO finding a way out does remain a possibility.

That was while they were still alive, so the rules may be different. Even so, what "life" even is in a universe where there is literal life after death is something to ponder. As far I recall, the lore was that people either join with "their" plane itself when they've existed for long enough and lost their will to continue, or evolve into some kind of Power, but I suppose TNO's typical stats at the end of the game are more an indication of "anything can happen" (I had 25 in INT, WIS and CHA). As Grace said, the challenge may be holding on to yourself, especially in a place almost diametrically opposed to your alignment (I was CG), which is an oddity in itself.

Yeah, TNO is, by endgame, one of the most powerful beings in the Planes by the end. He may have started out human, but has become something else by the end (as evidenced by his SPEAKING IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS.)

Without going into specific spoilers, are all the enhancements technical, or were they able to restore any cut story content and/or character dialogue?

Any restored content or dialogue is purely due to bug fixes. Chris Avellone also edited some of the text (but the typo in the "Brothel of Slating Intellectual Lusts" remains. Because classic.) But aside from that, nothing new.

Look here: forums.beamdog.com/categories/pst%3Aee-modsI haven't seen any restoration mods at a glance, but if there's anything, most likely you'll find it there.

Just gonna resurrect this thread I bought the enhanced edition on the last steam sale. I stayed up until like 2 in the morning today to finish my first playthrough. Needless to say I finally understand all the praise this game got.

It's a clever game, but I was missing an emotional connection to the narrative. If you combined the thoughtfulness of Black Isle/Obsidian with the emotional engagement of BioWare, you would have quite a special game.
