Yeah the facial animations were sometimes a bit hit and miss but overall better than I had hoped. Just like Zero I'm focused on the eyes and if they look alive then I'm good. Almost every character had fairly alive eyes

HZD really got hammered for its facial animations. The thing was, it is just a much higher quality game than MEA. Plus, it wasn’t facing hordes of “fans” just waiting to be disappointed. I immediately noticed all the similarities in names and so on between the two. As you said, most of these are things HZD got right, while MEA was meh. Ah, didn't know that they did get some flack for the animations, I haven't heard any criticisms before about it.
And you're right about MEA being deliberately pounced on for every perceived flaw by fans. It still irks me that shows like The Know were going on about the facial animations months after the patches (within a fortnight of launch) had largely fixed those problems, while the Honest Game Trailer complained about bugs/glitches that I'd never experienced once in hundreds of hours in the game?
Sometimes they’re excellent, sometimes Aloy looks like she’s suffering facial paralysis. 😆 On the whole, I thought they were good. The eyes are very expressive, and that’s where I tend to be looking. Yeah, most of the time the animation is great, but other times, it looks like Botox was the only thing to survive the apocalypse. Still, with how incredibly realistic the facial animations have gotten in the last ten years, I think we can afford the occasional odd expression now and then.

Animation expectations can be particularly unrealistic, especially when high-fidelity cutscene-driven linear games are being compared to open-world games. HZD looks great from my perspective. (just completed all the Trials for the first time at 'Blazing' level, very happy about that) Well, that's enough for another day...

I have to say this game is immensely comforting in its sound and general feel when revisiting it after a long break. This is a good way to describe it. I love this world. I always feel so at peace and at home while playing. I may have just thrashed a crowd of gargantuan machines, but the peace of nature quickly resumes. There isn't a settlement, environment or tiny corner of the game in which I do not feel fully absorbed and immersed. I think this is the game's greatest achievement. It's amazing that it could get so many things so very right.

I'm playing this game since we recently got a PS4Pro for stuff like couch gaming. We specifically went for Playstation because of the exclusives (the ones on XBone which interest me enough are on PC anyway), and the missus didn't want a Switch...
And since Horizon is one of the 'must have' titles for the PS4 I bought it since I like the premise and setting.
So far I'm pretty impressed by it! I'm still in the Nora-area though, but after the "incident"...

Played it through on Normal, including DLC, 80+ hours, on PS4. Then PS4 crashed and took all my saves with it, no backups. Silver lining, gave me an excuse to upgrade to a PS4 Pro and OMG HZD is stunning in 4K with HDR. Took some of the sting out of having to replay everything through the DLC.

Silver lining, gave me an excuse to upgrade to a PS4 Pro and OMG HZD is stunning in 4K with HDR. Took some of the sting out of having to replay everything through the DLC. I finally bought a TV for that this week! A Sony 55 XE-9005. Not as cheap as I was hoping but after 7 seven months of waiting for a sale that never came I decided "Fuckt it!" and ordered one. Could have gotten a 2017 LG OLED for almost the same price but after seeing them in store and finding them awful, I'd rather have a Sony LED until OLED TVs are brighter, got rid of image retention and cheaper so I can buy a Sony OLED (which looked great) that doesn't cost two grand. After fiddling with the HDR settings for half an hour I got HZD running and... didn't look THAT impressive tbh. I mean, it looks great but you'd think the upgrade from a 7 year old 36 inch LCD (not LED) screen would be more apparent. Or maybe it would be on a side by side comparison. Mostly I'm just glad about the size and getting rid of the clouding my old TV has developed. I DO kind of feel like replaying this game now though. Except I probably won't because I'm now addicted to Subnautica and probably will be for weeks and maybe months... *sigh*

Except I probably won't because I'm now addicted to Subnautica and probably will be for weeks and maybe months... *sigh* Make sure all the settings on both sides are right. It's very picky. Get one setting wrong and it falls back to regular 4K. And make sure you are in the correct HDMI socket in the TV, they aren't all necessarily the same. They aren't on my Samsung, anyway. The key for me was changing my TV setting from normal HDMI color to HDMI RGB. Here's a somewhat imperfect but better than nothing comparison video of PS4 vs PS4 Pro. Watch the vid on your 4K TV for best results. I didn't bother with a 4K vs. 4K HDR comparison on YouTube, because YouTube compression, not to mention the lack of good capture formats, understate the quality difference. Oh yeah, and forget about OLED, it's days are numbered. The future is microLED. www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/microled-vs-oled/

PapaCharlie9 My settings should be correct. I watched a tutorial. The game DOES look great but the biggest improvement is 4K. I can stand one foot away from the screen and play standing and it still looks sharp. Maybe as somebody who does most of their gaming on an expensive IPS monitor I'm not easily wowed by a TV. They are much inferior. A little less so than before now on the new Sony. I'm happy with the TV though. Black levels are excellent. The whole perfect black craze of OLED is overblown. I can barely see a difference to the black borders in certain movies. And the XE90 isn't even THAT expensive. Only problem is that certain HD Netflix shows look pretty grainy now. I don't have that on my 1080p laptop. My mom's 10 year old HD Ready (!) plasma makes regular SD TV channels look way better. But then again I don't watch TV anymore. I don't think OLED is going away though. I think it's the best technology IF they do something about the persistant cons of said technology that mad eme decide against buying into it. Prices are coming down. However, production might remain too expensive and so OLED might die after all due to lower profit margins.

Late to the party I know (catching up on a back catalogue of PS3 remasters and PS4 games), but I just thought I'd drop in and show some appreciation for this game, given it's not a million miles from feeling like a BioWare game. I finished the main story today, just got the DLC to work through now. I loved this game. The story was compelling (I don't know what I expected but it wasn't this!), and the characters are ones I'll miss once I put the game away for good. Whilst it's a largeish open world game not once did it feel like a grind as they occasionally do. The balance of missions, collectables, levelling etc just seemed to work so well. If you've not given it a go yet I highly recommend it!

Most people like the Carja Blazon because of those abs, or the Shield-Weaver for the awesome OP protection, but I like the Banuk Sickness Eater for the way it looks. The Carja Blazon is indeed awesome! I also like: - Outcast outfit - Oseram Sparkworker (medium) - Nora Silent Hunter (light, master) - Banuk Werak - Banuk Sickness Eater (medium)
The Shield Weaver is TERRIBLE. How does a well preserved badass sci-fi suit end up looking just like any other of Aloy's outfits when worn?! I wish I hadn't wasted my time backtracking to retrieve the power cells I overlooked for this. All the way up that tower again... Ugh. I'm still not over that disappointment it seems, lol.

If you play close enough attention, you can see that Aloy pretty much just slaps some of the "power modules" of the shield Weaver into her regular outfit. Guess a bulky armor wouldn't fit Aloy very well.
