I guess Cailan will hang there and never get a funeral.
Just finished Return to Ostegar over the weekend, killed all the Darkspawn and spiders and the Necromancer, but all I get is "we'll put you to rest when we've cleaned out all the darkspawn from their holes" and no exit from the battle-field.
I'm guessing it's a glitch, unless I've done it far too early (this before I've even gone to Denerim - just finished Redcliffe).
Oh well. Poor guy.

In the cut scene after defeating the orge the warden can choose to build a pyre for Cailan. In the cut scene the warden I think looks down and shakes head a bit. This part is not there? Nope. No cut scene. Oh well. Maybe I'll start over since I know what I'm doing now as a mage.

Reload before you went to RTO? Tried that. Didn't work. It's okay - going to respec a new mage tonight for the weekend and try again. I probably did something wrong. DA:O has a bad habit of, when you kill your boss too quickly w/out taking all the cuts, etc... then you end up screwed up. It's okay though. I just love the game too much to really care about the little things.

I felt bad for Cailan before I even got that DLC because of crap I said to him when he first meets the Warden.
Best is obviously "I killed an Arl's son who raped my friend" and the reaction you get from that.
Also sort of felt bad for Duncan when you and Alistair say outlandish crap after returning from the Kocari Wilds (I forget the line exactly, Alistair is talking about dancing in front of the Darkspawn in a dress or something).

The cutscene is after you kill the ogre, necromancer, etc. after the spider. Then you go back through the tunnel into the Tower of Ishal, only you end up looking at poor Cailan again.

Done all of that. Killed the Ogre (btw: Leliana takes such glee in it if she gets the kill!) and the necromancer (no spider on that field, but they came out when I head back in to the tunnel (I'm used to the cut scene right there and going out the door up the hill). It's still sad seeing Cailan that way though. Brought a tear to my eyes.

Cailan is grander than people give him credit for. They always see him through Loghain and Anora's lens of him even though they're both assholes.
I firmly believe he played the Effusively Optimistic King to keep up Morale and his only flaw was trusting his father's best friend.

I firmly believe he played the Effusively Optimistic King to keep up Morale and his only flaw was trusting his father's best friend. Agreed. At the Ostagar camp he had a bunch of quarrelsome allies acting like spoiled brats who couldn't put aside their differences even in the face of a greater threat. Who kept peace between all of them - yep Cailan. While I believe he is a genuinely optimistic person in life, so it looked natural when he did it, I also believe a part of it was a mask for the sake of morale. I wouldn't say though it was pure manipulation on his part as he really does exaggerate Grey Warden's powers and he really is naive. But, partially - yes. Kings are trained at raising the troops morale. It's a skill, not just a natural ability. Trusting Loghain was a flaw. Has anyone else noticed that essentially Cailan WAS trying to do exactly the same thing our Warden was trying to do? He called on mages to fight and he wanted the Orlesians and who knows who else that got rejected by some sulky allies who didn't trust x or y or z to come too. He was trying to assemble all allies - and even went out of the box to call on Orlesians. It was Loghain who robbed him of having at least twice the number of troops he had by yelling, 'Don't invite these here! and I rather retire than allow y to fight at my side!' Well, he ended up listening to all those 'warnings' and didn't.

@dustyelf Yep. If you're so sure about your victory, why give a secret key to someone else before the battle and remove your brother from the center of fighting? A several precautions right there.

Hmm, I used to think of Cailan as just onether airhead royalty, but you guys have a solid point. Even the part where he was thinking of divorcing Anora is justified by that they couldn't have kids.
But he did conspire with Celene, and only 30 years after a bloody war with a nation that openly sneers at Ferelden and its "dog lords". No Orlesian bastards on Ferelden soil, I say.
