Eh. I don't think one is "better" than the other. Both are brilliant. Dragon Age is my favorite, though. The setting has just completely captured my imagination.

Mass Effect for a myriad of reasons but the first would be same protagonist throughout and the last is VANGUARD CHARGE!! Then a bunch of reasons in between. Best power ever invented in the history of mankind. Would take charge over force choke / 10. But force choke works over skype though

This is really tough. Both have things that are better than the other. For example, Mass Effect has more fascinating races and lore and doesn't annoy me anywhere near as much with inventory. Combat is waaay more fun in the entire Mass Effect trilogy than in any of the Dragon Age games and the character development with the PC and teammates over all three games was far more rewarding than the start up and toss out the attachment because they'll be replaced next game.
Dragon Age though, is staggering in its content. The conflicts between factions feel more complicated than a lot of Mass Effect situations. Decisions don't have an easy solution. They can backfire and do so in a way that's devastating and believable. Interactions with teammates are far more nuanced and feel more realistic in that you can't please them all if you play honestly. More importantly, you can see different sides of issues depending on what race you play as. You're not automatically defined as human, the special snowflake. Also, the romances are done with a deft touch compared to the painful, facepalm inducing flirts in Mass Effect.
So, Dragon Age edges out because of the greater amount of freedom and respect given to the player's intelligence and the choices offered without moral simplification.
They both need better hairstyle options though.

Yeah, throw another one in for Mass Effect because I prefer more action oriented gameplay.

I can't say I love one over the other. I've only recently got into Mass Effect (The games were sitting by my console collecting dust, and had been meaning to play it ages ago but something always seemed to get in the way). I've played many RPGs (my game type of choice) but Bioware seems to have a way of capturing the spirit that many other games in its genre seem to lack. I doubt I've been playing these games as long as many others here. I was first introduced by DAI then went on to DAO and DAII, and I've been thoroughly engrossed in the lore/characters/game play ever since. I love fantasy and those games are absolutely everything I could have asked for. And then I found out about ME only through BSN prime. I was excited to find another game that I could play after DA that was built in a similar fashion, but I wasn't overall enthused at first because 1. I really don't love Sci-Fy and 2. I loathe shooter games. In the end I grew fond of ME's characters, its lore, it has incredible replay value, and I even found that I enjoy its attack methods. So I guess what I'm trying to say is I have difficulty picking one over the other. On one hand, I have the fantasy RPG of my dreams, yet on the other is an RPG based off of criteria I never could have seen myself enjoying before, so major bonus points right there.

Let's see..
Best Game: ME2-Well optimized gameplay, intriguing (if somewhat predictable here and there) story, pretty awesome characters DA:O-Utterly painful combat (being a melee character in a large fight was a nightmare), very good story, great characters, origin stories (Dwarf noble ftw!)
Mediocre Game: ME-Very fun story if a bit juvenile here and there, poor optimization across the board, gameplay was below average, copy paste environments, but just had a sense of wonder to it that most of the other games lack in both franchises. DA:I-Pretty good around the board, but wasn't really exceptional in any way. Ending was unexceptional. Game time was definitely padded with 'run around the Hinterlands simulator.' Most of the writing was good, but a few instances were downright laughable (and not by design). When I played it, I was just happy it wasn't horrible in any way.
'Bad' Games: ME3-Well optimized gameplay, graphics downgrade from predecessor, mostly good story with a legendarily lousy ending and a couple questionable plot points, multiplayer. Probably caused the biggest backlash in the company's history. DA:2-Underwhelming across the board. Copy paste environments, characters were downright ugh at times, ACTION BUTTON. Successfully divided the 'Biodrone' base. God I hated when they called us bigots because we pointed out the game wasn't great.
ME2 > DA:O ME ≈ DA:I (well, maybe ME < DA:I, but its a close one. Right on the border.) ME3 > DA:2
I say ME franchise is best! Mass Effect 2 is still the first game I would recommend to anyone asking what the deal is with Bioware games, and the only piece of truly 'bad' material in the franchise was the ME3 ending. DA did not have anythinig as terrible as the ME3 ending, but definitely had a lot more shakey stuff across the board.

Despite preferring blades and axes, adventures out in the wilderness and natural power abilities as opposed to augmentations, I have to say Mass Effect is the better series. I guess it has a place in my heart being the first rpg experience I've ever had, and without it I wouldn't be where I'm at now-- playing Baldur's Gate.

IF I had to choose, I'd say Mass Effect but only if I really HAD to choose cause I really love both. Mass Effect has Multiplayer and my guys which is the one thing that makes it tip the scale, I would never have met all my buddies if it weren't for that xD

I like both franchises, but yeah... Dragon Age is my favorite of the two. The setting, gameplay and characters just click with me in a way ME never really did. And the lore, the story DA is telling and it's mysteries have put that hook in me in a way that not even the ES or Witcher settings could. And while ME's combat was fun, the characters interesting and some very cool locations... but the overall Reaper storyline was "okay-but-not-great" for me. I liked the Genophage and Quarian/Geth plotlines more. And the Mako, hacking mini-games, planet scanning (and yeah, the endings) keep it's replayability down for me. But MEA definitely has my attention, and crossing my fingers they knock this one outta the park.

I like them both but I like Mass Effect more. I tend to enjoy trilogies more than stand alone games. I like the lore, the setting and the races more in ME than in DA.
It's not a question of sci-fi vs fantasy for me. I like both genres but the fantasy of DA is somewhat too much high-fantasy for me. In the fantasy realm I tend to vastly prefer dark-fantasy over high-fantasy. I can deal easily with a sugar-coated sci-fi but I really can't with the sugar-coated fantasy.
Speaking purely of fantasy I'm more of a The Witcher kind of guy. I like my medieval setting dark, ruthless, unforgiving and bloody.
Conversely in the realm of sci-fi I prefer lighter space-operas more than dark sci-fi. So probably I won't like any dystopian cyberpunk game or Dead Space-ish type of setting.
It's more of a personal preference really. I voted ME.

I played through the Mass Effect trilogy once. It was pretty good. In my top ten cRPG experiences of all time, even.
So far, I have completed DAO nine times, DA2 eight times and DAI seven times. I think this adequately demonstrates how high each series stands in my affections.

Both are overhyped to all hell, there is little brilliant, unique or otherwise appealing to either's narrative.
Standard Sci-Fi/ High Fantasy respectively.
That said, there is a good game or two among them but as they went on with lore divergences, mainstreaming and in essence making the game stupider to appeal to folks who would never buy it to begin with...
Well I wouldn't make a argument for either one being better then the other, they are both mediocre products, from a once halfway decent studio that has fallen apart. They do have one thing in common though.
For both franchises the third game was the worst by far.

So for my two cents:
Gameplay: This is probably one of the clearest examples in one direction or the other but Mass Effect has the over all advantage here. The gameplay, and especially the gunplay, and especially some of the inventory systems and power management systems are much better. Even Mass Effect 1 positively owned DA O in terms of gameplay. Though shout out to Inquisition's amazing crafting system.
Story: As much as I am loathe to admit it, and as much as I loved the story to Dragon Age Inquisition, I still have to give the slight advantage to Mass Effect. Mass Effect has been a continious story from beginning to end while Dragon Age, at least I have heard once, was not supposed to be a game series hence the series probably only really began with 2. If Inquisition continues on with the fine story and continues to build upon the foundation of Inquisition, and even DA 2, then it will probably over take ME. Also DA has always had more flexibility because it was never meant to be a trilogy. They will keep making games as long as they can until they feel they have run out of story.
Characters: The clearest advantage that DA has had. DA, especially Inquisition, managed to create a cast of very memorable and amazing characters. Plus there is Cassandra Pentaghast, who is quite probably my favorite female character in all of fiction.
Setting: Another clear advantage for Dragon Age. The story of Dragon Age is the story of Thedas and Thedas is one of my favorite fictional settings. I have never considered getting a map of any fictional world before I started playing Dragon Age and I am so eager to see more of this world in Dragon Age 4.
Presentation; Dragon Age, it comes down to the music and that Inquisition was just plain Gorgeous, and quite cinematic.
