This movie was one of those rare A24 films that fell flat for me. It was a compelling premise, but the 2nd act became tiresome & by the end I really didn't give a shit about any of the characters. Shame because the cast is pretty great 4.5/10

8/10 After a gazillion years I finally managed to see the sequel to one of my favorite movies of all time. It was truly great though I would not recommend seeing this without seeing the original classic; it does build upon the original movie a lot.

This looks kind of cool and - while I am not sure it deserves all adulation it is receiving, mostly due to being the only new, moderately decent action movie out at the moment - I liked Extraction, so will likely check this one out. Is it wrong, though, that I'd much rather see them "fighting through the ages" than another modern day, spec ops action film? Basic premise for those who don't know and don't have time to watch the trailer - Theron leads a group of immortal warriors in the modern day. Bad guys want their genes...or something. Watched it last night. It was fine. Blatant sequel bait near the end, but fine.

I read that the comic was always planned as a trilogy but only part 1 (covered by the movie) and part 2 are currently available.

Finally watched Joker last night. It wasn't as good as the hype would've had me believe, but very good, nonetheless.
Phoenix was amazing.
Also, I don't buy - at all - the criticism it attracted at release about glorifying violence or encouraging it. It did what any good movie did - provide context and rationale for the actions of a bad person (or, more accurately in this case, someone who becomes a bad person). Providing a believable reason for bad actions is not even close to the same as excusing/sympathising with or condoning said action.

Saw Avengers endgame the other day and i have to say that this is one of the worst movies i have ever seen where even to begin: 1 Thor Booooooooo pathetic drunk and fat Thor. 2 Captain America Booooooooooooo he should not have picked up Thor's hammer. 3 Hulk Boooooooooooo a smart and intelligent hulk nope not for me. 4 The whole time travel Booooooooooooo. 5 That they killed Thanos in the first ten minutes Booooooooooo. 6 The first one and a half hour were boring as hell and therefor Boooooooooooo. 7 Iron Man Boooooooo i did not like Tony at all the first one and a half hour so Boooooooooo. 7 Captain Marvel should have more then the 3 minutes that she got in the movie so also therefor Boooooooooooo. these are just a few things that i really did not like at all. The only one that i really liked was Rocket the rest that i did not mention above were ok. And the only time that this movie actually put a smile on my face was when Captain Marvel destroyed Thanos his ship. 3.5/10

An entertaining watch to pass the time but not as good as its animated counterpart nor the 2009 Chinese production Hua Mulan, starring Zhao Wei. There are a few things to appreciate in this adaptation such as the vibrant colours used, from settings to uniforms (Hua Mulan is decidedly more drab-looking), and the choreography of some of the fight scenes. I was reminded of the movie The Great Wall, with Matt Damon, Pedro Pascal and Jing Tian. Of course, these were not enough to distract me from the fact that this movie could've been over in the first ten minutes. Truth be told, the introduction of the supernatural elements (the witch, the phoenix) really add nothing of value to the movie and could've been taken out with little impact.
For a movie that's almost two hours' long, there are some problems with the pacing and execution of some of the scenes. For instance, the first 6 minutes of the film show us Mulan in her childhood but the scene where she makes that fateful decision to go in her father's place (a great scene in the animated film) goes by in a flash. Blink and she's already wearing her father's armour. Take cues from The Last Samurai's wonderful armour scene next time. Even so I feel like pacing was relatively good up to and including the training, which was given a good 20 minutes. However, for my part, events afterwards moved quite fast. Mulan takes part in her first and only battle as part of the Emperor's army, gets exposed, returns to the garrison three minutes later to report the enemy's plans, and is trusted to lead the Emperor's rescue in no time flat. I don't know why but it felt incredibly rushed. For the sake of comparison, Hua Mulan marks the passage of time (she fought for 12 years as a general) to show how war is taking its toll on Mulan, as she sees her friends die on the battlefield time and again, and how she becomes such a legendary warrior and general. The growth Zhao Wei's Mulan experiences in the same runtime is leagues better than that of Liu Yifei's Mulan, if there is any.
Another issue I have with the movie is how over-explained it comes across at times. It's as if the actors think that they must explain to the audience exactly what's going on, omniscient narrators included (these were really not necessary), and that sadly undermines scenes that would be more impactful if they just kept silent and acted with their faces and emotions (what is a problem for some actors in this movie). A perfect example is when Mulan's father finds out someone's taken his weapon, armour, and conscription scroll, and sees Mulan's brooch in its place. I would've cut the scene then and there, with silent comprehension dawning on the family's faces, but the movie feels the need to explain it was Mulan, as if we didn't already know, and the dangers she'll face, etc., etc. Talking about dangers, the one (army) battle Mulan takes part in was quite underwhelming to be honest. The battle tactics used were... questionable. The one moment I thought the enemy was faking a retreat to lure the army into a trap it turned out they were actually retreating and mysteriously vanished after being chased by Mulan who fought none of them. How exciting. And using siege weapons like that...
The soundtrack, although composed by Harry Gregson-Williams (Wonder Woman, The Martian), rarely made scenes stand out in the way the soundtracks for any of the movies I've mentioned thus far have. I'll listen to it again on its own like I always do but my initial impression is that it does the job but little else. Last pet peeve of mine is I half-wished the actors had spoken Chinese rather than English as I felt I was watching a dub at times, and not always a good one. Some scenes and exchanges were too cringey to listen to in English, with those deliveries at least.
If you want to know whether this movie is worth paying $30 on top of a Disney+ subscription, then the answer is no, but did you really need me to tell you that? To be fair, I would be hard pressed to find any movie I'd be willing to pay $30 to watch and own digitally, though I might pay such a fee for a physical copy (not of Mulan though). I can't say this is a below average movie but I don't think I'd give it more than a 7/10 at best, and probably leaning more towards a 6/10 (I'll sleep on it). If you want a live-action adaptation of Mulan, just watch the superior 2009 Hua Mulan (clip below).
PS: Slept on it and decided to lower the score's upper limit to 6/10 and give it a 5/10. I kept coming back to The Great Wall by way of comparison, a better film all around (better score, more memorable scenes, better acting and dialogue, a lot more action) that I gave a 7/10 when I reviewed it. Watch that film if you want a colourful spectacle with a lot of action and a badass female character. Mulan is, sadly, a very forgettable movie. The only scene I've watched a few times is Mulan's fight during training where she reveals what she's capable of, what says a lot considering the scene the movie would want you to come back to is the one where Mulan discards her armour (a symbolic yet nonsensical gesture) and charges into battle as herself rather than the man she's pretending to be. Even the score wasn't convinced by this scene.

Saw Tenet twice, with viewings about a week apart. Liked it (obviously - saw it twice)
Could not believe how much shit I noticed/understood on the 2nd viewing that I missed the first time.
Firing guns in reverse still makes no damn sense, tho.

The Hidden Fortress 10/10 Akira Kurosawa can often be a slightly problematic director in terms of his perceptions and ideas. I think he was a bit skewed in his portrayal of common folk, specially women which is sometimes rather bizarre; Rashomon and Seven Samurai come to mind pretty quickly on that account. There was no question however just how good a filmmaker he was, and this is one of the films that inspired Star Wars and you can goddamn tell because it's fucking amazing. So stop reading me and go see it. Now.

Firing guns in reverse still makes no damn sense, tho. How would you rank it in the filmography of Nolan overall? Better than Dunkirk? (not too hard to do) Better than Interstellar? Inception? Memento? I'd put it around Inception and maybe The Dark Knight Rises. I wouldn't call it one of his better films, but I think they're all so damn good it really doesn't matter.

Just saw TENET in an empty theater. I'd say this is possibly Nolan's best work, although I might like Inception a tiny bit more. Highly recommend it, unless you're a pea-brain or have ADD. In that case go watch Harry Potter again "Ignorance is our ammunition..."

In that case go watch Harry Potter again "Ignorance is our ammunition..." I gotta ask, did you understand this in the movie? 1. People who go into the inverter see themselves coming out before they enter, and so they know inversion will be successful. 2. Both of the people that Neil and the Protagonist encounter in the Freeport heist at the airport are the same person, the Protagonist, as he is inverted going into the inverter, and flipped back to normal coming back out. So there are 3 versions of the Protagonists in that fight. 3. That the future wants to invert reality to make time go in reverse so the environment heals, but because the "inertia" is reversed the past is destroyed; and NOT that the future is trying to destroy the past to affect the timeline for a better future (because basically no one in this movie actually ever changes the past)
Because most of this went straight over my head the first time I saw Tenet.

I have no doubt of that. What I doubt is; "Inertia" is probably not the right word, multiple versions of a character doesn't really distill or simplify the plot, which essentially boils down to 'There is truly no such thing as Free Will', the past CANNOT be changed but rather tweaked. Also, I personally believe Nolan made the some dialogue & details about the Inversion Technology purposefully vague. This film is open to as much interpretation as Memento

re: Tenet.... collider.com/tenet-weekend-box-office-200-million-global/I haven't seen it yet - the only Nolan films I've bothered to see in theatres are Dark Knight and Interstellar, but honestly, I thought given how things have been this year, a bit of his magic might be all a film needed to take off in the States. For those who've seen it, any insight as to why it might not be landing? At least, in the US - obviously worldwide it's doing OK.

They love reality shows & baseball, and they think shopping at Wal-mart is a great way to spend their time. It's pathetic No way are they going to pay to see a movie that doesn't spoon-feed them the plot points coated in SJW propaganda & gratuitous iPhone product placement. In my humble view, this failing at the US box office is actually a credit to Nolan and the cast/crew
