I ended up installing a mod that keeps the alien leaders from getting a reaction every time a soldier acts, which turns them from overwhelming powerhouses to...well, kinda wimpy. Found it and installed it. Thanks. I wish I had known of that when I started. I have a bunch of mods installed, most of them cosmetic but a few gameplay adjustments, but of course I couldn't know before I met the "alien rulers" that I'd want to have this one. The archon outfit doesn't look too bad, I just don't like face-concealing headgear. All in all, however, I got the impression that all the content in "Alien Hunters" wasn't meant to be taken seriously. First we have ridiculously overpowered enemies, from whom we get ridiculous and overpowered gear: ridiculous: serpent suit. overpowered: frost bomb. You can have your grenadier carry two of those with the right skillset, which most often means that up to two groups of enemies in a mission - half or more in most veteran-level missions - are very easily defeated, especially late in the game when the rulers are gone and you don't need to save a frost bomb for them.

I actually never used the frost bombs. I prefer to use explosives to shred armor. Though maybe I'll try them in a future playthru. A also don't generally like face-concealing outfits. But the archon suit impressed me that much.

Started up a second rookie playthrough and ended up getting the DLC, and since it's a campaign in progress the Viper King showed up and killed off my specialist and a rookie in a retaliation mission. By about the third encounter the King is dead to my medic specialist using the bow, having the frost bomb helped, so I figure that killing him off will lead to a short break from the rulers...boy was I Wrong! Berserker Queen makes her first appearance in the very next mission, probably would've killed off my A-team too.
Also made my first Spark unit, it couldn't hit anybody for awhile but it was pretty lucky since most shots missed him.

I remember cheesing the Berserker queen by moving my entire team to a high roof and putting a team member at the top of each ladder, effectively blocking her access to the roof. All she could do was run around downstairs and eat slugs.
The Viper king died to a lucky advanced repeater shot. Good times.

I think I might go for another PT now that LW2 is out, maybe wait for them to patch it first. I wonder, does anyone know if XCOM2 was considered a financial success? It's hard to say without knowing what their expectations were, but according to SteamSpy XCOM 2 was #8 in terms of revenue on Steam in 2016. It sold over a million copies on PC so far. On console it sold pretty terribly though. September was less than 25k (US retail).

That's... not terrible, but not really amazing either. I dunno. I guess it also depends on how XCOM2 compares to the first one and the expansion. It's just that I'm trying to figure out if XCOM3 is likely... From what I can find, XCOM Enemy Unknown sold 114k in its first week (all platforms, not counting digital), while XCOM 2 sold over 500k (PC only, counting digital). That seems like a solid improvement. With all the mods XCOM 2 should have some pretty good legs too. I think with those numbers a sequel is a definite possibility, though I wouldn't expect it for a few years yet.

Firaxis had a good idea, and they waited for a while to release it.
Plus now they expected modding and made the game mod-friendly, so they made improvement upon improvement.

The numbers are actually very good for a turn-based tactics game that won't sell well to the twitchy-fingers crowd with short attention spans and doubtful IQs that appears to make up the majority of the gamer population. Unfortunately, it will have an impact on XCOM 2's already terrible performance.

In regards to the difficulty, I understand that you can change some variables, but yes, it is definitely supposed to be a more unforgiving mod. That said, I've seen on the Steam mod page various elements from LW2 as separate mods, maybe you might find this interesting. I know those and I have played with them. They are very enjoyable. Whether I'll play LW2 depends on its configurability and compatibility with some other mods I have installed, particularly "Configurable Mission Timers" and that mod that gives the Alien Hunters bosses fewer action points. I like the idea of a more interesting strategy layer, I just don't want missions to be more difficult in the early game.

Just finished the Shen's Last Gift mission on my Long War 2 Legend campaign. I decided to do it as soon as the mission became available so I could utilize the SPARK to help with the slog of beginning missions. Five hours. That's how long that mission took. On the bright side though I didn't lose any of my soldiers

Finally got round to buying this in the end. Quickly learning from some novice mistakes. Such as not priorising the comms relay. By the time Ive got round to getting one in place the Avatar Project has progressed by four bars and I have a major task on my hands to claw it back.

How much more difficult is Long War 2 compered to the base game? I want something new to the game, but im not sure if it is too difficult to me. What i have seen about Long War 2, makes me feel like playing with it might be interesting. Just not sure about the difficulty.

I don't really see any extreme difficulty. I can still magic a VIP out with two snipers and a stealth fuck you you can't see me coming scout.
(Then again, I am using a class mod that has the potential to be a liiiiiiiiiiittle broken at times, so maybe it's that...)
