kwwl.com/2020/08/08/nasa-to-remove-offensive-nicknames-from-cosmic-objects/Soooo glad NASA is prioritizing this over exploration, development of space flight or other feats of actual pioneering. What's next, are the terms for black holes and brown, red & white dwarf stars going to be labeled as "problematic", "offensive" or "racist"? Hopefully companies like Space X will pave the way forward and not get mired in idiotic PC culture or identity politics. My hometown football team (Canadian Football) just had to change it's name after 71 years. They were known as the Edmonton Eskimos. And I'm sure that in those 71 years your hometown's football team was just an oppressive blight on Eskimos all across North America right? PC culture & identify politics these are cancers of western society.

The team on a number of occasions contacted the Inuit community and asked about it and there was no consensus, many didn't care or some thought it was an honour, a very vocal minority showed up all of a sudden and started a huge ruckus, the sponsors caved and thus the team caved. It is what it is.

So, one article out of hundreds on a news site, quoting one article out of dozrens on a NASA site is somehow a proof that "NASA pushing PC culture over space exploration"? Talk about a stretch!

Oh no, NASA took a hot minute and spent zero dollars to stop being racist. I guess that means no Mars pics this year.
Here's an unpopular opinion: Being upset because a cosmic object or a local football team changed its name to align with modern sensibilities is dumb and bigoted as hell. I assure you, the meteorite isn't shedding any tears over it.

To be fair, I think we are maybe beginning to have at least some success in pushing back. But I find your rebuke mostly to be about semantics, because my perception is that it always takes priority over everything.

If it does take priority over everything NASA has on it's worksheet, then more fool them. If they're simply trying to even out an imbalance in opportunities for those who deserve them, then good for them and I hope it works out. Just as long as they're not playing the publicity game with no intentions of following thru ofc.

My impression is that NASA have never looked twice or or even once at things like sex or skin color. Not even back in the '60's. That's not the problem. And never was. The problem is the stench of intersectionalism and grievance culture that poisons our society and invents new "crimes". That's what NASA think they need help with. Telling them that Eskimo is now verboten. Not because it is "offensive" in any way to anybody, but because it and social media gives some culturemarxists power for claiming that. Since being of sound rational minds, NASA can't know that by themselves.

There's only an entire biographical book and movie about the black women who worked at NASA and the racism they put up with there. Maybe there is. I've not read it and I haven't watched the movie. I've only listened to the interview of one of the women, so that's what my impression is based on. And I now do remember that she said there was racism, but that they just ignored it and bypassed it. The people who mattered were more interested in her work. Which is how things should be. My impression may be incomplete. But I'd add two comments: You will always find some racists everywhere, but that's not the criteria. And that NASA employed those women and promoted them. In the 1960's.

I take it you have an exhaustive list of every company, institution, community and organization ever, private, public, federal, doesn't matter, who have made this grave mistake. I'd like to see it, because I find it difficult to believe that all of them got their activity and economy destroyed. my perception is that it always takes priority over everything. Perception can be wrong due to biases and all that stuff. That is why we need hard facts! My impression is that NASA have never looked twice or or even once at things like sex or skin color. Not even back in the '60's. Is that why NASA sent first American woman, first African-American and first Asian-American into space only in 1980s?

I am genuinely intrigued which company or organisation had its activity and economy destroyed. Can you explain to me what you think this statement means? It means that your assertion that 'NASA have never looked twice or or even once at things like sex or skin color. Not even back in the '60's.' might be incorrect.

Can you explain to me what you think this statement means? It means that your assertion that 'NASA have never looked twice or or even once at things like sex or skin color. Not even back in the '60's.' might be incorrect. Why? 1 - Do you assume NASA is sending up random (or racially&gender profiled random people) for pleasure trips? 2 - Or do you assume the qualifications are evenly distributed in the population, across genders and races? Because it seems to me that one of of those assumptions would have to be true, if your reasoning is to make sense.

I absolutely love Batman Returns (1992). I know some people don't like it and prefer the first movie more. I think it's underappreciated.

There is always a finite but impractically large number of hypotheses. That's Phaedrus law. But your statements need to be meaningful for your reasoning.

I don't. There is always a finite but impractically large number of hypotheses. That's Phaedrus law. But your statements need to be meaningful for your reasoning. Why do you think its not meaningful? " Is that why NASA sent first American woman, first African-American and first Asian-American into space only in 1980s? " Can you explain to me what you think this statement means? " It means that your assertion that 'NASA have never looked twice or or even once at things like sex or skin color. Not even back in the '60's.' might be incorrect. " So obviously, you think the details of the first statement somehow strongly indicate that NASA looked at "things like sex or skin color". Don't you? Otherwise why mention it? And why explain it as such? To me, that's a pretty unreasonable claim. And it can only make sense, if there were no special qualifications for being an astronaut and they could just pick anyone. Or, alternatively, if those qualifications were uniformly distributed across the population. And of course, neither of those things are true. Before the Space Shuttle, in the 1980s, there were the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs. With the exception of one of the Apollo astronaut, who was also chosen for his special qualifications, a geologist, all those astronauts were chosen from military fighter pilots. With the Space Shuttle, you could take passengers, and astronauts were chosen for more varying mission roles, from the scientist astronaut program (which had been rolling for a long time by then, from the '60s I believe).
