Inspired by the "unpopular opinions" thread I thought I'd start this one for fun... not necessarily expecting it to have support and it might just fall off. Yeah but basically I kinda loved the Wheel of Time, over and above all the other fantasy series, even though they were formidable at times. I thought it was hands down better than Sword of Truth, which basically just copied all the central ideas. I thought it was better than GoT as stated in the other thread, simply because it was much more fantastical and kind of high striving (magic, fantasy, vast cultures, etc) I think the kind of world itself was more complicated and dense, the heroes like Artur Hawkwing, the kind of endless comparisons between characters and the banter between characters, Mat, Perrin, etc. Also, the battles, I mean, that should be clear because RJ was a military Historian basically they were always epic in the extreme. But yeah, apparently they are making this into a TV series, which I zero confidence in, I doubt they have the chops to convert this mammoth thing into the ultimate series, but you never know. My favorite book is probably... the.... 2nd or 3rd... whereas by the 6th (Lord of Chaos) I think the series started to drop off. I mean, once Rand had Callandor and all that I thought it was pretty much game over for everyone else but then I think they felt the need to come up with more ideas to keep it all going for longer when he was about as powerful as it gets there. However (spoilers) the trick with the Aes Sedai and neutralization there was fairly clever, but after that point... eh. Still, I think following Mat, Perrin, all around, and back again, was always a great joy, plus I really liked the side characters like all the women of the series, Nynaeve, Elayne, Aviendha (and her famous ahem, spoilers, MOMENT with Rand). Yeah basically as much as anything I actually enjoyed this book series. This is the English list of the books in their order of release as well as titles# Title Paperback 0. New Spring (Prequel set 20 years before the events of the first novel.)1. The Eye of the World 2. The Great Hunt 3. The Dragon Reborn 4. The Shadow Rising 5. The Fires of Heaven 6. Lord of Chaos 7. A Crown of Swords 8. The Path of Daggers 9. Winter's Heart 10. Crossroads of Twilight 11. Knife of Dreams 12. The Gathering Storm ( completed by Brandon Sanderson)13. Towers of Midnight (completed by Brandon Sanderson)14. A Memory of Light (completed by Brandon Sanderson)

Sword of Truth was all right for the first 2 books I think but I prefer WoT I guess, but at the same time my goal isn't to throw salt on things Sword of Truth is an admirable series and all that, I have friends that really loved it and plowed through the whole series. Rand was great though I liked him best on the Crown of Swords cover

Beat me to it! Didn't want to keep derailing unpopular opinion thread.
Absolutely loved the first 5 books and really enjoyed 6. 7 and 8 were...hard work, although both had their good points. 9 was fine, but the ending... After however many years reading about men who can channel going mad...it was amazing.

For some reason, I had a very hard time picturing what Perrin looked like through the whole series. Despite his descriptions. I always pictured him kind of like a nordic hockey player or something, tall, strong, broad, golden hair cascading down either side, and just this kind of mellow contemplativeness and just general phased out ness at times. Then you would say something or something important would happen and he would look up and give you this long yearnful glance, eyes sort of seeking approval and desire, needing your affection and interest.

No! This thread must be destroyed! The series should have ended after 10th book, not drag needlessly on. And Robert Jordan, you're not allowed to die when you have an unfinished series. *uncontrollable sobbing*

The 10th book? The one where all that happens is people you've never heard of react to the end of book 9???
It's like Youtube on paper.
Ending on 10 would have set dragonmount.com on fire.

Right I should mention the various WoT fandoms and affiliated materials Well! Or others can chime in as well, naturally dragonmount I visited a bunch once upon a time which is this place www.dragonmount.com/index.phpWhich ah, yeah that website is definitely different than what it used to be, but still there it be! Plus there is Dragoncon which morphed into an unofficial Wheel of Time convention at various moments. Although now there is apparently Jordancon which I am unfamiliar with but I heard about it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JordanCon

Oh sorry, in finnish translation, they've chopped each original books into two or three separate books. So it would be the 5th book in english.

I honestly kind of hated the ending to Crossroads of Twilight, whereas up to Book 5 I was pretty much all in... I still enjoyed it of course. I think 6-9 (English 6-9) were sort of uneven but still entertaining.

Yeah I was pretty confused about what book we were talking about there, for a bit. I'm going to put the list in the OP just so people generally have some idea what's going on...
Actually I'll just put it in the OP.
Anyway to clarify I thought Book 6 was the one where I felt a shift in tone, but all the way up until Book 9 or 10 I was pretty invested, after Book 10 I kind of struggled and I really thought once he died it was going to be impossible to finish the series satisfactorily.

But yes! Anyway the truth is WoT is such a vast series I honestly can't even remember half the things, but that would take pages upon pages... I guess in terms of pure characters though... wow that's tough I think as stated it would have to be something like...
1. Elayne (I don't even know why to be honest just thought she was awesome) 2. Moiraine (Reasonable and powerful kind of "soul" of the series for awhile) 3. Mat/Thom (Just both of em together for the same reasons, the fun and playful relief in the franchise, I always loved how Mat was so capable even though he could be a jokester at the same time) 4. Galad (for reasons, before, just so perfect) 5. *As a villain* So not LIKE per se but I thought Moghedien was the best villain in the series in many ways.

I read this earlier this year. I was annoyed with Rand and Matt because they were meandering and clueless about themselves and the world they're in, in the beginning. Part of it could be blamed on the way they were brought up and that facts were hidden from them but I just rolled my eyes at how long it took for them to wake up.
Anyway, I enjoyed the story. Fav chars are the women, not the guys though. Exception being Lan and Perrin.

Well there was some issues with the translations and it took ages for new ones to be translated, and they've decided not to translate the rest of the books in finnish. Of course I could start all over in english but I think that for me, this ship has long since sailed. Anyway the series broke my heart and traumatized me for ever. *Snif*

That's a shame, Vella - book 11 was the last book Robert Jordan completed before his death and it was, in my view, the best book since book 5 (the Fires of Heaven). Heaps of action and lots of plot threads that had been dragging on for multiple books got tied off.
12 and 14 are also very good, although a little uneven in places due to the fact that they (like book 13) were written by two different authors.

Went back and forth on whether or not to create a new thread for the TV show coming on Amazon Prime, but since the last post here is nearly 5 years old, it seems unlikely people want to or care about discussing the books It's actually a little better than I was expecting. I was going to check out the first episode or two when they became available anyway, but my feelings are basically summed up by this. Nowhere near 'hype', and still don't actually expect great things, but it might not be bad.

2. Agreed, at least the visuals in the trailer look very decent so far. Still tough to really judge how good it can capture the books. I am listening to the audio book series at the moment. It's perfect to fall asleep to because a) I already/still know the story to some extent from back in the day and both the male and female narrators have these awesome calming voices, that just make me fall asleep almost instantly. This also means that after about half a year, I am still in the middle of book 2 and at this pace, I'll be through it sometime around 2038 but I am not in a rush. Anyway, looking forward to the series. Between that one, season 2 of The Witcher and the LoTR series next September, Fantasy fans get quite a bit of streaming fodder these days.

Unfortunately it's almost impossible to find these days AFAIK (unless you are willing to visit the more shady corners of the internet) but if you get a chance to play it, do so. It tells a story independent of the books (but IIRC Robert Jordan was consulting on it back in the day) but it's a really nice story and well presented in cutscenes which were quite spectacular for the time. The gameplay was the real star though. You play an Aes Sedai who can barely channel herself, so she uses Ter'angreal (it's their excuse for the game mechanics having ammo but it's only partially a straight up shooter). If you just try to throw fireballs at Trollocs, you'll run out of ammo very quickly and die (the game was fairly difficult). Instead, you have to use the different kinds of magic they give you in creative ways. If there is a cliff side, maybe use a whirlwind Ter'angreal to throw a Trolloc over the edge. If you need to get through a locked door and you can see an enemy through the window, check if you have a "swap positions" spell, etc. They were super creative in the tools they gave you and the level design was very smart in how it made you use them. You'd also get a whirlwind tour of the WoT universe. Travel the ways and run from Machin Shin? Sure. Explore the vaults of Shadar Logoth? Absolutely. From breaking out of a Whitecloak castle, to fighting through the Blight to exploring the libraries of the White Tower, You'd do all of it. Really, for WoT fans, this was a great experience.
