Well until they raise prices on games it's not going anywhere, unless you have a better idea. I'll rephrase. I don't have a problem with microtransactions generally, but EA brought it to a new level, especially with MEA. I haven't played any game that's anywhere near as aggressive in its attempts to milk players. Unless it's clear that they toned it down for Anthem, not worth it. I disagree that EA is taking to any level beyond that is currently on the market. They have a lootbox you can buy with in game currency or real world cash and if anything the in game currency is easier to get with Andromeda then what it was with ME3MP.

Well until they raise prices on games it's not going anywhere, unless you have a better idea. Wasn't recently calculated that if game prices from the '80s matched inflation they would be between $100 and $120 now? Since development costs have been going up since players want more and more with each game it only makes sense they are trying to find money elsewhere. I even remember paying over $100 CDN for Final Fantasy 3/VI when it was released for the SNES. Pretty much, average price is close to 90 us now if we adjusted for production cost and inflation, by some estimates at least It's a real catch 22..if we scale back we lose a lot of content and support, and how "big" games are today that will be a jarring change. We also lose content further by that metric, where a game like Andromeda is all we get. No dlc or anything.

Yeah, there seems to be a backlash against Marvel vs Capcom Infinite because it doesn't look good enough. I know about the collector's edition garbage they pulled, but I think these problems are unrelated. I even remember with Mass Effect 2 and 3 people were upset because "the game looks last gen" and "has bad animations" as well.

I've stepped down from paying full price for most games (I always keep my eye on XBOX gold deals). However, there are some games that you either: - want to play asap - want to support the company
So sometimes I still buy it at full price (MEA was such a case). I can spare it anyway and I don't buy games THAT frequently. I just don't have the time anymore I've been rarely dissapointed (Bound by flame; what a piece of utter, utter, trash you were) with paying full price, as I rarely agree with the loudly spouted popular opinions.
PS: Anthem will fall in the latter category, so I will definitely be paying full price. If I'm lucky, it'll fulfill the irst category as well...

I agree with what you are saying, but the funny thing is that with EA games now there is a much higher chance I will buy them at full price due to Origin Access (or EA Access for XBox users) it is basically a $5 demo for the release version or at least near release version of the game and you aren't limited to multiplayer only like other "beta demos". Now if bandwidth was free I would be more annoyed at paying $5 for a demo, but I think I would be scared of the potential bandwidth costs of a completely free demo of a game anymore due to game file sizes.

I played for a couple of months, and had never felt pressure to buy packs. My numbers on my Bronze and silver level XX characters were close enough to other players without any fancy guns, I could play Gold just fine. There are very few races, and earning and using Mission Funds is uber easy to unlock and max out gold characters who were the most compelling. Nothing like ME3, where kits and guns mattered and were really hard to get when you wanted something specific. I really did not feel like I really wanted anything in MEA after 80 hours, but have not gotten half the things I really, really wanted in ME3MP after 150 & I could not even touch Gold there without a friend to carry me. And that pressure in itself was nothing compared to a MMO where you can't get into a Daily if your gear is not good, and people wipe the floor with you in PvP, and you won't get credits after hours of trying because your DPS is not top 13 people in the 2 seconds the monster everyone is whaling on lives. And, yeah, that's in a game where game currency translates back to real money easily and legally for farming players. Now, yeah, that's when micro transactions are forced on you if you wish to keep playing. MEA? Not a whiff, everything worth having is earned and sufficient for the level you are capable of playing.

That said, I'm much more a proponent of being able to choose which gun you buy/upgrade, that this random lootbox nonsensery. But then again, if they did that, microtransactions would be even more prevalent... Ah we lose either way, and bioware wins.

I do not consider myself a loser. I had fun with MEA:MP, and would have continued playing it and doing the curve without paying real money just fine for far longer if they put in more maps and new races. I actually thought that in its last iteration the looting curve with intergrated Veteran Bonuses and Dailies for Mission Funds was excellent for a casual player like me. I was thriving in MEA progression-wise unlike ME3MP and MMOs I tried where I always fell hopelessly behind. I did not quit MEAMP because of progression, I quit because they prematurely discontinued support to provide enough variety of experience every day & not added things I would desire to get. If progression is that comfortable in Anthem... but no, I doubt it, 'cause it's not a fast coop with matchmaking.

To me I think BioWare has the better loot box implementation (not that I am that big of a fan), but unlike a game like Shadow of War you have to trust the in-game mechanics to get items will match the loot boxes where with BioWare its the same item so would be the same chance regardless of how you earn them.

Fuck the loot boxes - they dropped alright - at least before they bloated characters and weapon pools. The game was grindfest for people that rather liked to play with the abilities than gear. Fuck guns! I wanted cool powers, but someone decided it a good idea to nerf abilities to the ground and multiply XP requirements for leveling like tenfold. So when a new char dropped I just got another PoS that I didn't really want to level up.

Nothing EA has done to Bioware can even begin to compare to what they did to Origin in the '90s.

Idk how you can credibly say that. I have over 100 hrs played (according to the app which doesn't count menu time, actually much higher) and spent over $1000 on packs. Only unlocked ushior I in my last few hours of game time. Wanted to try it ever since it was buffed. I'd also like a shorty Siphon but no way in hell am I ever going to spend the time or money to get that. Similar situation with UR chars. I like vanguards and wanted to try the Batguard when he came out. I knew I wouldn't have the time to grind it out so I bought packs until I got him - $75. Total bullshit. I've never encountered any game that asks for even remotely as much time and/or money to unlock its core content. I'm not talking about nice little things like skins in overwatch or shaders in destiny that don't affect gameplay. I'm talking about basics like accessing the game's roster of kits and weapons. They're much greedier than the companies they're trying to compete with like Bungie, and frankly the game is much worse. Notwithstanding that I've been a hardcore BW fan for over almost 2 decades, this pattern is absolutely going to affect whether I get Anthem or just stick with destiny 2, where I don't have to fork over $200 just to play a voidwalker.

Credibly? Each person's experience is as credible as another's. We all play differently and want different things. I am a casual who loves kits and enjoys leveling & can't care less about guns. I spent 60$ on the game as pre-order, played MP right after 1.09 dropped, did not spent a cent on the packs and was happy with what I had. I did not really want the batguard, I liked the Scrapper and got him to Rank V through just Mission funds. Other chars I liked were the Asari Sentinel and Human Vanguard, I also liked the Salarian Operator. All of my Bronze and Silver chars hit Rank XX without any problems, and what I have unlocked of gold guys, was through Mission Funds. Full stack of Mission Funds (minus the Pt game) per day was obtainable on most days with less than 2 hrs between the mobile app and Dailies. I normally played Human Engineer, Krogan Engineer, Human Vanguard, or Asari Sentinel - I liked them all very much though I leveled every Bronze and Silver char fully through just playing and it was really easy to do on Silver/Gold. In terms of guns, I had no real preferences. I used maxed our Ruzad with like Rank V Syphon on it, and one of the silver Machine Guns also maxed out or some pistol once in a while. It worked just fine on Gold. When I quit - on the day they said no DLC (meaning no new races), no more content save for 4 more humans, I was just accumulating MFs and playing Silver/Gold, sometimes solo'ing Bronze for MF. I was spending all MFs on ranking Gold characters because I liked Scrapper and Architect (he had a pet!) and it was going fast enough for me. I certainly did not feel compelled at all to pay for packs, because everything was coming along nicely.

You didn't need good guns to play Gold in ME3MP... You needed some experience, combo knowledge and skill. Don't even have to fire a gun with a biotic kit. I recently bought ME3 for PC to play the MP with friends (used to play on Xbox) and once I had my vanilla vanguard at level 20 I was good to go for Gold after like a week of relearning the controls. A few days ago I joined a Platinum lobby with my Drell Adept equipped with the common Phalanx level 4 and scored third place.
Since it's a coop multiplayer scores don't matter though. And hence guns don't matter either. And this is exactly what's so awesome about ME3MP. Sure, if you want to top score with a gun class you'll want good guns. I played the MP for 350h on Xbox and never got the Black Widow and none of my ultra rates was anywhere near maxed. More like level 2-4. So that's probably indicative of poor RNG design.
Then again I read a discussion about complaints that Destiny 2 now lets players get "rare" loot way too easily and people get bored. So apparently it's tricky to get RNG right. Make it too difficult to get rare loot and it frustrates people and turns them off. Make it too easy and it's not rewarding anymore. People like some degree of grind.
I don't personally but I thought ME3MP was OK regardless of the insane time sink required to max the manifest because you didn't have to do that.
I have no interest whatsoever in competitive online games that require you to grind to keep up.
If Anthem let's players have their fun at any moment like ME3MP, I'll probably check it out.

Full stuck of Mission Funds per day was obtainable on most days with less than 2 hrs. That's cool that you got what you wanted and didn't care about what you didn't get. Glad you had fun, really. But that doesn't really add anything to the broader topic of this thread or what I was talking about in the post to which you responded. It's not really disputable that MEA asked more time/money to unlock its core content than its peers. That you happened to get what you want is nice, but it doesn't address this issue, and I'll note that there are countless posts in the MP section complaining about how they can't seem to unlock the content they're actually interested in. In Destiny 2, if I want to try a striker titan, I play for 2-3 hours and I'm there. In MEA, if you want to try the Angara Exemplar, well ... no guarantee you'll get it in 75 hours of playtime. Not even a particularly good chance. Even $100 might not get you there.

That you happened to get what you want is nice, but it doesn't address this issue, and I'll note that there are countless posts in the MP section complaining about how they can't seem to unlock the content they're actually interested in. No, I disagree, because MEA:MP was perfectly playable for me on Gold with no expenditure and decent numbers using the kits and equipment from lower tiers, while I could not play ME3MP on Gold with twice as many hours spent because my gear/guns were not unlocking fast enough. In other words, time spent maxing out the Bronze and Silver gear in MEA:MP was short, and that gear was more than sufficient to play Gold. I have just looked up what guns I had on my characters, and they are Cyclone Siphon VI, Disciple and Ruzad Syphon IV and V, all of them Silver guns, all of them perfectly effective with Veteran bonuses in Gold games for a very average if not below average player like me. That was NOT the case in ME3MP, were you were backed up on Silver and could not advance to Gold with what you could reasonably unlock without money. In other words, for me ME3MP is an example of a progression curve that is slower, holds you back earlier and therefore suggest that you gotta shell out cash earlier than MEA:MP.

And, I have played for 73 hours, and the only characters that are not unlocked on my Manifest are:
Asari Duelist, Krogan Gladiator, Salarian Operator, Human Kinetisist, and Batarian Vanguard, all of them Ultra-rare.
I even have the Human Juggernaut to Rank III, lol, even though I never played when they released it, I just spent all the accumulated MF's when they finally put the gold boxes with characters in the rotation.

Look at my post again. I'm talking about BW / EA being worse than its competitors. If you want to argue that MEA is better than ME3 to attack the "progressively worse" point ... ok. I don't really agree but I also don't really care.
Also, that's a ton of the roster to remain locked after that much time, and they intentionally put the flashiest characters at that rarity. Cool that you don't care, but plenty of people do.

Well part of the reason why they do it is because they get away with people paying over $1000 in micro-transactions for their game. Regardless of if $1000 is a lot of money to you or not, you're actively encouraging EA to continue doing these sorts of practices by rewarding them for doing it when you hand them more than the price of a full price AAA game just because they released a new character you wanted to play. I'm not here to tell you how to spend your money but if you want EA to stop, they're certainly not going to do so because we complained about how greedy they are on the internet. They're only going to stop if it's not profitable to do it, which only happens if people stop giving them money every time they do it.

How was it evident in MEA? Idk how you can credibly say that. I have over 100 hrs played (according to the app which doesn't count menu time, actually much higher) and spent over $1000 on packs. You've actually spent 1k on this stuff? And you're complaining how much of a rip off it is? You can't really call bull shit when you're feeding it. EA has also stated this year that microT profit is at an all time high, even I wouldn't stop if people are going to keep paying up. I also think you need to branch branch out to more games if Andromeda is the worst you've seen. Halo 5 has a mode specifically where microTs stockpile your arsenal. CoD sells weapons, boosts, etc etc to get them faster, battlefield does the same thing. Dues EX has it in its own campaign. As a previous destiny fan, it's microTs weren't bad, but it's expansions/DLC were just as bad. Good luck playing even a fourth of the game if you don't pay up 30$+ for each expansion. By the end of it one could have spent 130+ just to even stay relevant on content in a game that isn't even an mmo. I'm already done with D2, but I'd for sure be fine if D2 does the same thing cause why have a season pass in the first place? Ive barely put much into Andromedas MP cause I don't like rehashes so I really never bothered, but I didn't feel compelled to spending for characters or weapons. Instead I used apex to buy things.

I defended it staunchly early on and didn't reverse my opinion until the full experience started sinking in. Before that, coming off ME3, I was in a much better financial situation (graduated) and was happy to dump money onto my favorite dev. So the 'don't feed the sharks' advice really didn't apply. Hindsight is 20/20 but doesn't help you in the moment. Obviously from my earliest posts I am now very wary and will be more risk averse in my game choices, which pretty much means EA is going to lose thousands on me alone unless it abandons that model. 3) if you think $1k is important in the grand scheme of things you're crazy. I seriously doubt they derived a material amount of money from people who spent over $400 on microtransactions in MEA. The bigger issue is that they're alienating even the most loyal of their fan base leading to the launch of their biggest project since SWTOR.

BW was different in my mind until after MEA.

Just to comment to your #3, this isn't any different then the loot boxes in Mass Effect 3 or Dragon Age: Inquisition so if players were going to be alienated by these things being there I think there would have been a much bigger fallout during Mass Effect 3, but since it caught on as strongly as it did I doubt. There are always going to be players that feel alienated by one designed decision or another, but I doubt this one would have that much of an impact for a lot of people.

As I stated above already, this is NOT true! ALL kits in ME3MP are Gold viable. You don't need good weapons for the human vanguard or human adept which are default vanilla kits. None of the power classes are dependent on guns. Hell, you don't even need to be level 20. I've had been outclassed by level 1 character players. I'm currently working on a new manifest on PC. After 54 hours I have maybe half of of characters and 2/3 of gold weapons (not maxed of course). May not be ideal but I get something new to try out constantly. I take the Avenger X to Gold matches no problem on the vanguard. Nothing is holding anybody back from playing Gold but their own skill. I don't intend to sound mean. I'm an average player myself with terrible aim. I just want to say that your assessment is completely off here.
