There's some serious bias in this thread. Destiny 2 is an 85 on metacritic. That's a respectable score and about where some of my favorite games have landed. Fan reception is positive from what I've experienced on forums and discord, aside from people whining about shaders which is a nonissue if you play the game. As someone who's actually played it, I'm very impressed and have been sinking plenty of time into it, despite that I'm not a core shooter player. Not sure why people are picking out one-off reviews and random lines out of context to try to paint the game as bad. Anthem has a steep hill to climb to compete with destiny, and if there's any hint that Anthem will try to milk us for microtransactions the way they did in MEA, I'll happily just stick with Destiny instead. I've played it too, and I'm not a huge fan of the final product. In part because a lot of the improvements over the first game were already done in the Taken King and some improvements from the expansions are now gone, like private matches. Instead we got randomized playlists so you can't actually choose what PvP mode or strikes you want to play. The story is bland and by the numbers, with few characters besides Cayde-6 getting more than a token effort at actual characterization. We don't even get to explore Zavala and Ikora much, they both agree to return to Earth after about 20 seconds once you find them. The silent protagonist al ends up making it feel like your character is barely participating in the story scenes at all. People praise the story only because the incoherent mess in vanilla Destiny set the bar so low.

Much better than MEA's frankly and had some truly terrific sequences that I won't spoil here. I've seen the sentiment you posted before but it's far from the majority opinion.

Much better than MEA's frankly and had some truly terrific sequences that I won't spoil here. I've seen the sentiment you posted before but it's far from the majority opinion. What was so great about it? I would still rank it below MEA and I had a lot of problems with that story too. Go ahead and use spoiler tags. The Destiny 2 story was perfectly functional, but it was nothing more than that. It had a few good moments, like the second to last mission especially, but beyond that it was surprisingly bare bones. There were some big missed opportunities. Each of the planetary missions should have been an opportunity to flesh out the three Vanguard characters, but instead they overcame their issues in one conversation and moved on. Another issue is the losing the light plot point, which was rendered pretty irrelevant since you get your powers back in the very next mission. I realize the gameplay necessitates getting the powers back, but it still undercuts that story point, nor is it made clear why other Guardians aren't visiting the shard to get their powers back.
MEA had an antagonist that was even less interesting than Ghaul, but it's characters still had more depth than the majority of Destiny's characters. I don't know what the majority opinion is, but this is a fairly common one in my experience.

Since when do majority opinions really matter to the individual playing the game?

Interesting that Angry Joe rates D2 a 6/10 and says 'watch out for Anthem' (and other games). I find it bizarre that he makes a big deal out of how many improvements Bungie has made... and then proceeds to give it the same score he gave the first game, and "only because of how well Nathan Fillion delivered his lines". Despite the fact that he raises some good points about the pacing of the story, the unbearably cringe-y characters, and some of the negative changes to the economy, it really does seem like he's trying to keep up his "angry about video games" shtick. Plus according to his player profile, he didn't even participate in half the activities he complains about. Seems kinda strange, but I guess it's possible he did them on someone else's account. Probably because Vargas is a terrible reviewer most of the time. But I'm biased on that point.
