5 out of 5 for SNW. I enjoy spending time with all these characters no matter how what the story/theme/setting is. the good thing about this format is - best of both words - you want to do a multi-episode arc = you can. Not finding this weeks episode good, no worries, next weeks might be more up your alley. SNW has made live action Star Trek fun again for me, that has not been the case since ENT. Looking forward to the next episodes!

Wow man, SNW really continues to impress! After the very dark episode last week, this lighthearted romp was just the antidote we needed. - Spock and T'Pring could easily have been cringy as hell but it wasn't, it just had me laughing all the way. The best thing about it was how similar the two still are, so in that first scene, before they tell Pike I had a hard time keeping up with all the mix-ups in the dialogue ... in a really fun way. - The diplomatic issue and the inevitable solution was maybe telegraphed a little too well, so the solution wasn't exactly a surprise but it was still a nice touch and Pike again was given a chance to really shine there as well. Also love the green shirt, in reference to the fact that Kirk also used to flip between green and gold in TOS. What is that? His diplomatic uniform? - Loved the little nod to DS9 with the solar sailing vessel. Gorgeous visuals there, too. - Chapel was pretty much - how does coldfoley like to put it? - MVP this week IMO. They are really showing up TOS with utilizing all the potential in that character now all of a sudden. - If I had any criticism at all, it would still be that the one underutilized character so far is probably Dr. M'Benga. We have mostly seen him just doing his job so far (one no-dialogue shot of fly fishing doesn't count) and the start of his personal arc with is daughter was a bit mediocre I thought and also crammed into the last 5 minutes of an otherwise completely unrelated episode. I hope one of the next episodes will put him front and center. I was also a bit bummed that Hemmer wasn't around at all (probably busy with the repair jobs) but at least he had some pretty cool scenes last week. But yea, that's really all I can say that doesn't amount to full-on praise and it's not even a real criticism yet, after all, if one of the next episodes remedies the situation, I'm all good. Back on the positive side, so many quotable lines this week. Some of my favorites: "Bad cop!" - "Dam!" - "Gotta be faster, chief." and also "They're gonna nerve pinch us for this, right?" Not even to mention all the Vulcan stuff. Honestly, I don't think I have seen a feel-good episode on that level on Star Trek since DS9's "You are cordially invited". So yea, what an awesome episode! I am still smiling over here.

SNW ep 5 Spoiler What do you think BSN Bingo would look like? They had what, 7-10 things to complete? Some of em weren't too too bad either. Although I guess the phasor-stun-fight would be significantly more difficult if you didn't have the Sec. Chief and #1 weapons-locker codes.

I have loads of suggestions, but I would have to ban myself. As much as I love Vietnamese food, I'm not up for banh mi.

Weakest episode of the series...at least so far. I was just getting up from a nap though so maybe I wasn't entirely feeling it either and it was still kind of descent...and well following last weeks would be super hard. So yeah lets get into it. The Continuity- So two wins and a loss a bit here. Obviously it was curious to see if they would pay off the events from last week and see where they went around and did their thing with the Gorn if there would be reprecussions...and there were. So that was a bit of a win there. Also directly referencing Discovery and the Klingon War. Not that I would expect this writing team to just abandon their own continuity like that but it is also very nice to see them mention it and carry it over with Starbase 1 being repaired. The loss here...expectations are the death of fandom here...but from the trailer I was expecting this to take place on Vulcan...and it might have been better had it done so. It would be just a bit weird if they have to run all the way back to Earth every time they take damage it comes off as a bit weird and small for the universe. And the larger commentary on things like warp speeds or galactic geography not being properly established in general. And it seems like they have been trying late as star charts have appeared in both Picard and SNWs but then they just warp back to earth if they have a problem? What if their warp gets heavily damaged? Hell Enterprise adressed this. I know this is the ultimate of nit picks but this episode could have been set anywhere in the Fedeation and had the same plot.
The Hijinks- So I saw an article recently about how they were like 'well Star Trek can be funny'. Cue the warning bells. Now I am sure that there is some people out there that object to Star Trek being funny just like they objected to Vader being funny...but Trek has had plenty of humorous episodes in the past and Tom Paris was an exceedingly funny character and his trolling the Hirogen was a highlight of the entire series. So yeah Trek can do humor and this was obviously the ep they were talking about...and it just felt really forced. Especially with the repeated menton of the word 'hijinks' in the first place. Sure some of the lines did get laugh reactions from me and Ortegas talking about the lirpa was hillarious but it just felt really forced.
Enterprise Bingo- The character piece here worked a lot better here then probably the 'A' plot. Though I guess not a lot to say on it. Just La'an and Una figuring out what to do and have some fun on the way and a nice little bonding moment. This does of course raise the broom stick paradox though with what the scorch ended up being...oldest piece of unreplaced hull on the Ent. Now I know the Ent is an old ship even now but would it really be that old especially pre refit? Also since the scorch was from some ancient battle or another just seems a little weird that it wouldn't have been replaced. But still nice plot point.
The Diplomatic/ Philosophical- Is what saved the episode from being really mediocre. That last speech from Pike and the reveal of the Solar sail ship was really well done. I really got shades from TNGs episode with the woman who just mimicks her mate to become compatable with whatever she was supposed to. Same concept here with a twist. A nice twist. This time this entire race seems to try and assume the traits of the species they are talking with in an ultimate form of empathy BUT they then expect the same in return. It was a beauitful moment in its own right because this species is about the ultimate in empathy but they just wanted someone to understand them and not prove it was all about them. Which then folded into the other two plots since the two Vulcans were trying to understand one another and then Una and La'an the crew.
Also them on the crew was epic and terrifying at the same time. I wish I could do that...but also would be to scared of being spaced.

Also them on the crew was epic and terrifying at the same time. I wish I could do that...but also would be to scared of being spaced. Bit of a different persepective. I like it, though I don't necessarily agree with it. The thing about returning to Earth is a fair point (especially that it didn't really matter where the episode would take place). I also would have preferred it to be at some other starbase, if only for the sake of variety. That said, in almost all of Star Trek it was never much of a problem to get from the frontier to Earth and back if necessary. The Enterprise D returned to Earth a couple of times during the 7 seasons of TNG. Despite it being a frontier station, the crew of DS9 never seemed to have much trouble goign to Earth and back and even in Enterprise, where they made all that fuss about how far they had already traveled with their comparably slow engine, after the first Xindi attack, they got back to Earth super quickly. So I don't hold that against them.
As for the hijinks and that the situation was forced quite a bit: That was my first reaction as well but then I thought of two things: 1. The whole Katra thing and how many shenanigans are possible with it is really well established at this point, so in that way, it wasn't too much of a stretch for me and 2. IMO that type of setup for a humorous episode for me fell right into the sometimes a little silly classic TOS style the series is trying to emulate a lot. If they had tried to pull something like this in an episode of Picard or Discovery, it probably wouldn't have worked. Here however, in the company of episodes where we had Kirk transprter clones, perfect android duplicates and a dude with multiple robot wives, this is fine with me, provided that it just serves a little one-off fun and amusement in this episode.

So SNWs is back to a really strong episode this week. Kind of a few odd issues here and there...which I will get to...but I will consider this another check mark on the whole thing. This week kind of a little bit of a 'murder mystery' which was kind of well handled in the end but a lot of goodness happened here and there. The Logs- It is becoming a bit of a theme at this point but its becoming a staple of this show that the logs aren't just meant for the Captain to explain the plot but the character whose story is the most relevant to explain their character bit. Ironically I point this out finally during an episode where Pike gets the log for this week but it is still relevant and well since this was more or less a Pike episode it did put a smile on my face.
The humor-See this is how you do humor, as in does not call attention to itself. And full disclosure if I do get around to rewatching last weeks I might be eating crow on this point...but just the pre credit sequence was already funnier then last weeks episode. Which most of it involved some playful ribbing of La'an to and Uhurha and just...Pike is the best.
Uhurha and La'an to the rescue...again- This is something that is starting to have shades of Wesley Crusher a bit which I do not really mind Wesley too much especially later on but yeah the cadet saves the Enterprise thing over and over again, child prodigy. It works then in a way and its working now but lord forbid they go into 'Mary Sue' direction here and this is something to look out for. I still think its working, so far because A. all the crew still has plenty to do...well more or less...in here and its still a group effort (and this is honestly the most Uhurha we have gotten since episode 2 so maybe a silly complaint in the first place) and B. she still messes up when she was firing on the one ship hitting it way too hard. Which on that note to I am very glad/ intrigued that they added more depth to the tactical station in just that one scene...its a lot more then just pressing buttons you have to calculate things to not blow someone the hell out of the sky if you don't want to. Credit to La'an here for doing it so well and for all the previous Starfleet tactical officers. Starfleet tactical, it may be a thankless job, but it is still important. Also its weird that out of all the characters in this show La'an is getting consistently the most screen time, the most to do, and the most development across episodes even in episodes that aren't hers...Pike even credits her AGAIN as having a lot to teach...but Christina Chong is so far doing a wonderful job in the role and Pike may be the MVP of Trek but La'an is definitley in the running for ROY.
M'Benga finally gets something to do- As a nod to Trek culture I have not been as harsh as they have been on them not bringing up her daughter I get that you can *probably* store multiple patterns in there but nevertheless that plot point not being addressed was still conspicious by its abscence. Now we get an update and a lot of expansion and sympthy points for M'Benga's character. While he remains the most dubious legacy character to include his actor really delivered this week. PLUS the whole bit about the medical tech was almost a spore drive situation but again any bad fallout in terms of canon because based on the resolution Starfleet is very likely not to get access to this tech any time soon...
CGI- Its not happened often but this week really show cases the modern special effects and tech values and god damn what a gorgeous planet and city scape.
"Its not set on stun"-Daaammmmmmmmmmmnnnnnnn Pike. Can you get anymore awesome?! Though it should be pointed out as great as the line/scene was it also kind of can be interpreted as Pike being a little emotionally compromised.
The Mystery- Which brings us to the big three points of this little 'review'...I loved how they handled the mystery of this episode...mostly. It kind of took a page out of Dragon Age (I kid you not) or typical horror in which it is constantly teasing you with information which then invites you to speculate on what the answers are going to be which invests you in the plot and leads you on. This was great because the episode would build this mystery and tease you and then before you got an answer...it would cut away. This was combined with the feeling almost from the beginning that they were obviously being cagey and hiding something...no matter how infatuated Pike was. Now this was great and the resolution was there is two kind of issues here because this episode essentially raised three mysteries and only fully answered 1. Again great, I loved it, but I get this weird disconnect because this episode seems like its sequel baiting yet at the same time not because issue 1. what does this process actually do to the kid? why is it so important for their society? These questions aren't exactly answered and 2. What about Prospect 7? I got a Masada vs Grayson divide from the Honor Harrington Universe vibe here...but no depth was added to it. Why did they split off? What was the divide? Etc. I would have loved to get back story on Prospect 7 and their own intenral resistance, maybe not important to the episode...but the question was begged.
The Resolution: So yeah this show has a bad habbit of leaving my jaw on the floor or tearing up in various degrees. And this was no exception. That poor kid. That evil society. And well there is once more some lingering political themes here which I will just throw the hand grenade in and not extrapolate on because well politics is bad ya'all...and I do like it that Alora was like 'yeah but the Federation does this to!' (bit weird criticism for the FEDERATION) and then Pike just threw it back in her face and promised to bring this to the attention of Starfleet. Now it is very unlikely they will do anything about it but at least the truth is known.
The Prime Directive: I am getting the feeling that the reason why they made the distinction for GO1 in the first ep was so they could get away with making a distinction between the Prime Directive and GO 1 that this is a more lax Starfleet. Which I once again am perfectly OK with because I approve of Starfleet being more of a moralist institution which I will probably point out every. time. it. comes. up. Of course the problem is that we could get a come back to Earth moment here when the crew interferes and it back fires but two notable moments here. In the opening Pike intervenes in the assault against the other ship and says "Federation Law demands I intervene" except in Nightangale Harry Kim was willing to leave another ship behind for being attacked. At least until Neelix convinced him otherwise. Yes, this is before hand, but the two instances are very related to one another. Now we did find out that the ship actually belonged to another race...sort of...but there we are. Second...obviously the resolution. Pike is quite incenced at what they do to the kid, and rightfully so...but I would really find this kind of judgement at odds with future Starfleet officers (unless religion is involved) and the Federation would probably just shrug their shoulders at the whole incident as just being part of a quirky culture. Now that is probably what is going to happen anyways after a fashion, I really don't see the Federation going to war to stop this from happening but at least the truth is known and Pike...being the Captain of the Federation's flagship...does give me some hope that the rest of the Federation would be equally as displeased by this, even if they can't do anything about it at the end of the day...don't think this planet is going to join the Federation any time soon.

This weeks episode is the first one I didn't like main-story/plot wise. Especially the gruesome reveal/end for the kid. Really felt for the 2 Doctor Dads and their kids. the secondary stories were fine though. Laan/Uhura + MBenga/daughter + Mbenga daughter and the special kid + the special kid and Spock)
Still Looking forward to next week - have no idea what's ahead, other than some Robin Hoodesque-fairytale archering thing will be a scene or story according to the Season 1 "outlook" trailer

So yea, definitely a decent episode but probably my least favorite so far. But given the exceptional quality we've seen so far, this isn't even a criticism, only means that this episode was "merely decent" IMO. My biggest problem was that you kinda knew where the main plot was headed super early on. I mean, basically, at the point when the treacherous guard started shouting that he wanted to save the First Servant, it was clear to me how this was gonna end. And once i realized that, most of the other characters felt a bit slow witted to be honest. Pike should have picked up on that line. He heard it. But instead, he pulls a Kirk and sleeps with the alien queen. The oh so slow slow interrogation of the father, intercut with Pike on the surface happily going along with the procession topped it all off. As for the moral issue, there could have been some sort of defense made for the actions of the Majalans (spelling?) but the one she came up with was just stupid. There is simply no equivalency between not being able to make absolutely no one in the universe suffer vs. deliberately sacrificing someone to elevate your own living conditions. Especially when there is a harsh but apparently viable alternative on that colony of theirs. And by the way, with their apparently god-level of science, I do not quite see how they couldn't make a decent living there without keeping a city floating. But ok, they seem to just have maneuvered their culture into accepting such an immoral practice by coating it in some honor-of-sacrifice thing. But that said, Pikes reaction to this was perfect. He is pissed off about it but I think he realizes that he does not have the right to interfere here (even if he had the capability, which he probably didn't). And I agree. You can argue against this, you can try to convince the leaders in charge to see your counterpoints but failing that, you have to fundamentally accept a culture for what it is and hope that they can change in time. That change must come from within. By the way, would have been interesting to get a short dialogue with Spock's perspective on the issue. After all, "the need of the many outway the need of the few" and all that. Though I don't think he'd approve of basically brainwashing a child into sacrificing themselves to keep a city afloat would sit well with him either. But I do feel there could have been an interesting bit of dialogue there. As for the B-plots, I don't have too many comments. La'an and Uhura had some great scenes again and finally we get to see some more of M'Benga and his daughter does play a somewhat meaningful part in this plot. Decent start for the character finally. BTW, agree with coldfoley on the opinion that the Trek Culture guys were a little hard on the show concerning that plot point and the whole transporter buffer thing. IMO, it's fine and it doesn't contradict anything we knew about the system older series. Anyway, what about Hemmer though? He was only in 3 out of 6 episodes so far with onloy one where he really got significant stuff to do. At this point, he almost feels like a recurring character rather than a cast member. I expect some Hemmer time ni the next episode (and yes, you bet I'll then say "It's Hemmer time!" EDIT: I feel like I should point out, that I wrote this post before watching the Ups & Downs. Otherwise one might think I just copy/pasted some of their stuff. But I do like that they make the same point as me, that the plot was telegraphed way too much. Now, I didn't necessarily see it quite as early as they did (I mean come on, the word ascension alone, really? How much have you been damaged by Trek already? ). Before the guard's death, I could have seen this go in a couple of other directions as well but anyway, glad they made the same overall point. Also, good Down on La'an's "you did the bare minimum". Forgot about it already again but yea, that one also made me go "whaaaat?".

This may be a bit too 'old skool' for some. But once you see it, you can not unsee it. [/spoil.er]

So I started watching SNW, 2 episodes so far, and in the first one I was confused about certain references, but I concluded it was stuff from Discovery which I didn't watch (outside a few episodes of the first season back when it started), but it didn't bother me too much. I liked both episodes of SNW and I'll continue watching it (until I get bored). This feels a lot more like "old trek" to me too.
I can go watch Discovery if that is ever required, as it is on the streaming service I'm using (Crave TV), along basically everything Trek.

I can go watch Discovery if that is ever required, as it is on the streaming service I'm using (Crave TV), along basically everything Trek. I am guessing that the first episode of SNW will remain the one with the most Discovery references. Those are mainly to Disco season 2, where Pike was captain of the Discovery for a while and had that incident where he saw his future. However, by the time SNW actually starts, Discovery has already time traveled into the far future (which is where that show continues), so it's out of the picture. Also, basically everything about the Discovery has been classified top secret by Starfleet and the only people on Enterprise who really know about it are Pike and Spock. So apart from the very occasional sentence between those two (and maybe Spock's parents, should they ever show up in the show), there basically should be no references whatsoever.
I think outside of the pilot episode, I only noticed one more so far, which was just some little inconsequential side note from Spock.

Is it me or SNW seems to have a big set/props budget? Picard looked cheaper (well season 1 since I haven't watched season 2).
Lots of extra on set too. It basically feel like they planned this as a movie originally.

Kind of a weird episode this week but still really strong in a way to. Not the best, but also certainly not the worse. Today's Captain's log was from...T'Pring. I really like what they are doing with the logs this season it is adding a lot of flavor to each one of the episodes and...its not even the main cast even.
Ortegas is starting to win one over for the funniest character of the season.
Captiain Pike's and Enterprise captured- This bothered me though. Pike goes on the away mission which really wouldn't have matter too much in the end but then the Enterprise was captured by these pirates. I guess there was a lot of them but hmm...weakest part of the episode. Also the solution to getting them out of it involved cooking?
Captain Angel- The reveal was well done and the double cross had me kind of surprised, though wife got it so curious to see where people was. But then she just sort of used up that good will with just how over the top she was acting.
Pike to the rescue- This however worked very well for me and Pike's 'get the hell out of my chair' and his pirate imitation gave me a good chuckle.
Sybok- Well this was a bold arse reveal and story point to bring up which helped smooth over this episode's rougher parts. Really interesting how this episode in this vein feels like one of two really big plot points which will be paid off...maybe soon. Afterall he was running around for Star Trek 5 so we know he escapes somehow. Very interesting and again bold. This does also bring up what are they going to do in the future? I am thinking that the last two episodes will be a two parter which many of these plot lines will come to at least some sort of a head.
Edit-I FORGOT TO MENTION...Jess Bush was pretty awesome this week. Finally they give Nurse Chapel something to do.

fun episode and story. the opener between Spock and Tpring had me laughing hard Loved we got to see a bit of Nurse Chapel in action (fight smart, not hard) My monitor nearly exploded by the Chapel/Spock kiss sparks though Boy Scout Captain - lol loved how Una, Pike, Mbenga, Laan played the "Braga" mutity act. "It works everytime" Also Ortega's funny lines Missed Uhura and Hemmler tough. For my taste the constant sexual messaging and also costume (see trough/leathery) from the real pirate captain was just way overdone, so instead of it all being just a natural and a normal thing, it felt campy/preachery to me, especially with the extra casting "see, we are diverse" annoucement and all such. It's a shame becuase the acting performance and manipulative captain story arc was fine otherwise.

Ah one of those episodes eh. This ep went in with a lot of trepidation but it really did surprise me. For the first time the humor has kind of really resonated with me especially in a full on humerous episode. In this regard to Melissa Navi and Anson Mount MVP those two would make great leads in a sit com...seriously.
But the big take away from this episode was that it felt like one of the more balanced episodes of this series so far...in terms of giving the entire ensamble something to do. My long standing complaint about this series so far, whih has sort of cristilized in realizing how this one did well, is that the secondary cast is not getting enough to do and I have been worried that ten episodes may not be enough to flesh out everyone...especially when Trk has often had trouble with 26. But this weeks we got a lot of power house performances and a lot to do for people which has deepened the appreciation for these characters. Ortegas got something to do other then press buttons. Hemmer felt pretty vital to the episode. Uhura was great. And ironically in this regard La'an probably had the least to do...
But then this does bring us to M'Benga and while I am still dubious it has to be *him* what an interesting way to wrap up his story arc for the season. It was unexpected in the context of the series but made perfect sense for the episode. I did see it coming a little before hand. That doesen't mean my heart didn't get broken in a million little pieces. But this was a welcome conclusion...but it also harkened back to Pike's issue to. Always felt like this was a microcasm for Pike's coming doom...but they did find a third option.

Hey, I am still catching up and haven't seen this weeks episode yet but I just saw the one from last week. Thought it was a very solid episode, not everything worked 100% for me but it was a good one ... until the very end when...

Ep 8 The Elysian Kingdomthe mandatory medieval fantasy episode... the acting, especially NewUhura, Laan and MBenga actresses and actor were a joy. the story was meh, but I'm happy this Mbenga daughter story line (hopefully) ended and it was rather corny, but still tear jerking. Also Hemmer "science the sh*t out of it" was back as well and Una too

What a roller coaster ride of an episode! At first I wasn't sold on the premise at all and thought - especially since it is the third episode out of 8 that focuses on humor a lot - that it was too silly. But the scenario grew on me as I realized how all the characters got to be kind of the opposite of their normal roles (I mean, Pike as the cowardly chamberlain,, come on ). That was cool and IMO the acting of pretty much everyone just knocked it out of the park. All the cast having just so much fun almost oozes out of the screen as you're watching. Also, finally Hemmer is back!!! And what a return! If I have one harsh criticism for the season so far it would be that his character has been criminally underused. He is awesome. Almost Odo levels of curmudgeon but he definitely has a sense of humor and empathy as well. What a guy. And yes, goddam, I did choke up at the ending. Yes it was a bit cheesy but so was the entire episode and so it fit right in with the rest. Poor M'Benga, but it was a nice bitter sweet ending to the daughter arc. I wasn't the biggest fan of that arc (think I said it before, it kinda felt like it got in the way more than it helped as a B-plot), so I am glad they didn't drag it out too long and this was a really nice way to wrap it up. Also, can we just please acknowledge how cool it is that they manage to give Pike a different hairstyle in each episode. So yea, maybe not my favorite of the season but definitely another awesome episode. Just 2 left and I am still waiting for a downer. If they can keep this up for just a little longer, they'll have created the most spectacular piece of Trek since the Dominion War in my book. Fingers crossed!

Running through Enterprise again with lore runner and my goodness I think I have discovered my love for Reed but its kind of weird because it could be so off putting. He just gets so maniacal and gets this little smirk on his face every time Archer lets him play with the weapons and muhahaha I am killing all these people. But he does pull it off. Now I think Reed kind of loses some of his arc sway to Trip in season 3 so we will see but its a funny perspective to have in a Stafleet officer running around...
And it does remind me of my other favorite Brit security chief La'an. I don't think she has quite been showing as much overt glee as Reed does but she also seems to be cut from the very same cloth in the opposite way. Very cool. Very calculating. 'Where fun comes to die'. Loves her job and loves protecting people and being a hard ass...but also just really competent. And yeah I love Tuvok but then they made him suffer from the 'Worf Effect' and I never appreciated worf to begin with but again Starfleet has managed to have a few really competent security chiefs in its time.
Which then makes me wonder...what department has the most competent people? Right now seems to be a toss up between the Doctors and Engineering.

Which then makes me wonder...what department has the most competent people? Right now seems to be a toss up between the Doctors and Engineering. Engineering is a pretty good candidate. All the engineers we see seem to be absolute geniuses. Doctors, I am not so sure about. Polaski never really impressed me at all for example, Crusher seemed competent, sure but mainly just did her job. Phlox was more unorthodox than anything else, even McCoy in the end is best known for his personality, the fact that he's a very competent doctor was always just somewhat of a given … in general, the ability of the medical staff to handle a crisis varies wildly with what the plot demands, I think. In the end, I think the department with the most competent/ingenious members has got to be science. Spock, Data, T’Pol, Dax, they all seem to be the people on the ship who come up with solutions to problems most reliably. And I guess that makes sense for a show like Star Trek.
That excludes Command of course because Star Trek captains are pretty much Mary Sues by definition.
