Some excitement is due after the next trailer. At least we will know more about the game.
This is just normal progress. MEA went through several months of Beta where game builds easily broke when compiling. During that phase, Bio introduced some artwork. I expect something similar... like dense forests, odd looking and giant fauna, ancient ruins... etc. Nothing revealing about the game itself... mystery has to be maintained you know.
As Bio currently keeps things under wraps, I'm putting my game time into Path of Exile...The Fall of Oriath. Old school Diablo fans can appreciate this small slice of a greater skill tree picture. DAI, ME and MEA and now Anthem skill upgrades are a pittance compared to old school. Influence of MP I guess.

This is different however, in that Anthem needs to have multiple beta's in order to have at least some idea to stress test the servers come launch day. If they don't have a beta for Anthem, I'll be concerned on the state of the game.

I wouldn't sign up for a beta, mostly because I'm really not the target audience, but I would probably give a trial a go. Not on access though. That's just insulting.

Assuming that this is an always online "MMO-lite" style of game, it would be incredibly stupid not to have a beta to stress test your servers and a other specific things.
Though personally I'm not gonna get excited until we know more about the game itself.

Game betas is like any other pre-production testing for banking applications or a user terminal communication control program. All have one purpose and that is to test: (1) for input data validity and rejection of invalid data (ie: a numerical field contains only numbers from 0-9).
(2) for proper error generation of invalid fields. (3) pass through valid data for account calculations.
(4) check play mechanics and response. (5) check audio triggers (ie: background noises). (6) check music triggers on certain locations. (7) check banter triggers (& to avoid repeating the banter too often).
(8) check loot drops and their contents (ie: normal, magic, rare... etc) as per design. (9) check weapon audio (ie: firing noises).
(10) check graphics options and game visuals. (11) check game response to graphic settings. (12) check for memory leaks.
(13) check NPC combat animations and animations in general.
(14) check protagonist animations. (15) check the game's cinematics. (15a) and the character's armour skins. Not sure if we will have a CC.
(16) check account authentication. (17) check micro transactions mechanics. (18) check the patching system.
(19) check player inter communications voice and data. (20) check HUB market mechanics where players can sell/buy stuff from each other. (21) check story triggers and mission ones too and mission completion. (21a) check out the badge + stats systems.
(22) check out individual maps + combat + exploration + triggers. (23) check out the tutorials.
(24) check the game save system.
......... ......... (xx) lots of other stuff
The fact that it is in beta is a good sign. But, at this stage, it's all internal. I doubt the missions and VOs have started.

True. However, I get the sense from past "conversations/interviews" with game managers/directors/producers that development of a new game/IP goes from:
(1) concept -> artwork->story board->game mechanics->game alphas to test mechanics, game flow and back to the beginning or somewhere in between when necessary.. Can be 2-3 years b4 the design is nailed down. Just look at MEA.
(2) betas come along when things get written in stone, though some flexibility is retained.
(3) VOs can still occur until the "last moments" before launch.
If you look back, the game's first trailer is usually near the end of the Alpha phase or at the start of the Beta. Since Bio recently announce the Beta the first Anthem trailer was made with the Alpha compilation about three months ago. And, 1st video trailer to launch is usually 15mo - two years away (appx. given past history)
So, yes, something was done but I betch'a the stories, maps are far from complete.

Possibly. Though Aaryn was quoted in December (?) 2016 discussing how 'done' Anthem was. Either way, we'll know in a few months, I'd be surprised if BioWare will be as keen to go to market with a game that's 'not ready' in a hurry.

I'm certainly interested in seeing what it's all about, although obviously we're still a long way away from getting our hands on anything resembling a beta.

I'm hoping they didn't/don't pull an Andromeda and waste a whole year trying make a concept work but then dump it as we know the effect that can have on a games production. Furthermore, if this is to be the "bob Dylan" of video games I would like to assume they'd use their time properly and have truly gotten some work done in the years that this has been in the making. If they're just now starting in the actual design of the game, only having a year or so to go till launch (although they've stated they're open to delaying it again) I don't think you'll get that "bob Dylan" effect as I'd see a lot of rushing and trying to crunch going on. It's still possible mind you but personally bioware titles aren't so great when they're rushed. Its all speculation but I'd like to assume they've at least got half the game done and maybe even more, I'd go even further and say they're near done if a beta is that close and at this point they're finishing things off and polishing. Honestly though games having so much time can also be a bad thing and disappointing. I figured destiny would be the best thing over since it had the same time frame and I was very wrong. Doom had been on and off it nearly a decade and while definitely the best title in a long while it still was underwhelming to me. Duke nukm had 10+ years and it's the worst iteration yet. A long dev time can be beneficial if used properly but I think it can also be the games undoing. with how good the demo looked it's kind of hard for me to believe they'd just now be getting started on the meat of the game, optimistic wise I'd like to think they're anywhere between 1/2 to 3/4 done with it already.

I think part of the issue right now is that we don't really know how far outside their wheelhouse Anthem really is. Co-op and flying seem big, but the story content remains to be seen. The lore does not seem as complex as their other settings though. Does not seem atm,obviously. But if it's just suits, jungle planet with the humanity's walled outpost vs dinosaurs/monsters and something-something powerful and hostile, than Taris on its own is more interesting than that. It does seem that way. But David Gaider worked on Anthem for a year and Drew is the current lead writer. Those two were the principle architects behind Dragon Age and Mass Effect lore respectively in the creation of those franchises. So I'm optimistic for the lore, that it will be deeper than we realize at this point. Maybe humanity isn't as limited to this one fort as we think and I'd bet the society gets fleshed out a lot.
