Lovecraft has bad luck with adaptations. But luckily, there is always the indie scene these days! The Kickstarter has passed, unfortunately, but for those who've always wanted a Lovecraftian RPG, here's an overview of the upcoming isometric, story-driven Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones, by Cultic Studios. And for the lazy, here are the highlights: 1. Because Lovecraft is public domain, the game borrows liberally from his work. It's the Roaring Twenties, the Old Ones have awakened, the world has gone to #@!%, and the city of Arkham, Massachusetts, has been transported to another dimension. The story's not about saving the world — that ship has sailed — but about surviving Nightmareland. 2. The combat system is tactical turn-based. It's not so much about killing things as it is focused on weakening monstrosities so you can turn tail. You will want to avoid a lot of the fights and run whenever possible. You control up to three characters, that is your main and two companions. There are several followers to choose from, and they all appear to be based on Lovecraft's short stories: the Outsider, from the short story of the same name, an undead soldier from WWI, and a psychic cat from Ulthar are some of the highlights. Companions are supposed to be highly reactive to what's going on in the story, so that if, say, you betray one of them, it may come back to bite you. Maybe literally. 3. You can create your own character and, on top of the usual skill and attribute distribution, you can pick an archetype and a belief system. The archetypes are sort of like origins: they each give you a different prologue, determine what skills you can level up to the max, and unlock certain dialogue options and special abilities. Your belief system determines how you regenerate sanity. Characters will lose sanity constantly, which carries penalties as well as perks. If, say, you are playing a rational character, they can recover sanity through research and learning. 4. Magic does not involve a mana system. Spells may have any number of unfortunate side effects, such as losing health, sanity, stats, or just backfiring entirely. Sticky situations may compel you to use them against your better judgment in order to survive. To that end, there's also a crafting system, with which you can make anything "from flamethrower fuel to painkillers." 5. The creators have mentioned games like Planescape: Torment, early Fallout, and Heroes of Might and Magic as influences. Sounds interesting, methinks. One can only hope their execution reaches the level of their ambition. There's a demo out already for the backers, which inspires some amount of confidence, though apparently the release date has been pushed back to late 2018.

Come back from the grave, thread long since dead! Ia, ia!
I apologize for the necromancy, but apparently the NDA for the game's demo dropped and there are a few videos with preliminary gameplay up. For those interested:
There's a second part for that video that finishes up the demo. The guy who uploaded it mentions at the end that the developers plan to have a public version of it available soon-ish.

I'm interested, but also in the Call of Cthulhu game that was supposed to be out last year. Tbh, the best Lovecraftian RPG I've played has been cthulhumud. It's 20 years old and still barely kicking but better than all the other graphics-based games I've played.

Quick correction of my previous post: the public demo is out already, and has been for a couple of days. Silly me. So if you would like to take it out for a spin yourself, you can check it out on Steam. Yeah, I'm keeping an eye out for Call of Cthulhu as well, but last I checked basically nothing had been revealed about it. MUDs have their charms, though when I play them I always manage to get lost. What ensues is me googling for a map and then spending an hour trying to figure out where the heck I am

Lore and story have me... read about the combat and suddenly I’m out. But I want that story soooo bad. Why do this to me?! If it’s any consolation, a lot of the combat is supposed to be skippable. You just have to spec your character in things like persuasion and stealth. Moreover, you don’t have to finish battles, necessarily. If you do enough damage, you can just escape and the story will proceed. This may actually be the smart way to play, since you lose less sanity and health (neither of which appears to regenerate automatically).

Even with my limited understanding of the tabletop rules for CoC, I know that you do not want to be engaging in combat, especially with the unnatural. Old Man Henderson is the exception not the rule.

Sounds inetresting and it make sense to be able to skip combat by running away or using stealth, since the horror of Lovecrafts creations mostly comes from teh fact, that they are unbeatable.
I will definitvely give it a try

Those who dig deep either vanish or go insane. I wonder what a video game would present as "ending"?

The setting looks interesting & custom lead, I like that. Just hope that the crafting is not a huge focus.... I want to see more, going to check out the game-play demo recording once I get home.

since the horror of Lovecrafts creations mostly comes from teh fact, that they are unbeatable True enough, though from the demo I'd say that most combat will likely be against various types of crazies/cultists. I doubt we'll have to fight a shogggoth... Depends on what kind of power an occultist could come up with. I'd stick with the "big guns" as being unkillable. No chance of defeating Cthulhu or anything like that. A shoggoth, though? Could be possible, but only with major leveling up and finding the right sort of equipment.

In 1v1? Hell no. Now 4v1 ehhhh, if you have to. I mean even the lesser freaks tend show up low caliber ammunition like its hotcakes, but that's where COC shines actually. Your guns fucking hurt, the damage scales, the bullets you fire when you start the game will be just as deadly when you finish the game. Which is something I appreciate a lot in a tabletop tbh

I've played a MUD called cthulhumud. There's potential there to take on certain powerful beings. While they game takes it further, I'd love it if Stygian allowed players to beat back some of the "lesser" evils to allow for continued survival. No happy ending but the ability to exist.

Game's out on Steam and GoG. Currently I am busy with Pathfinder: Kingmaker, but I'd be interested in hearing what those playing Stygian think.
