Can we PLEASE DROP THE WITCHER ARGUMENTS!? Well, not arguing about the Witcher will lead to silence interpreted as compliance, and this game's overwhelming success (where games like Tyranny or Technomancer are met with either indifference or angry criticism) will inevitably lead to mechanical cloning of the formula and we will have even less variety of the games to talk about in a thread like this. Overall, tbh, in the ideal world, the response to the question posed by the title of this thread, the best to hope for answer is that there are no must play RPGs, there are a lot of wonderful & very different games some of which may appeal to you, and some of them - won't. I count myself very fortunate that I still have games I have not yet played to go back to playing and enjoying right now, and released in the last three years or so.

I thought (mistakenly, perhaps) that this is a place for us to post about RPGs we DID enjoy, and why, and perhaps to find other titles to enjoy. Or, better yet, to point people towards other games that they might enjoy as well. Want to break the Witcher's stranglehold on modern RPGs? Show people alternatives. Edit: I don't know if future games are appropriate here, but I am looking forward to Vampyr by Dontnod. It's about a vampire in London during the SPanish FLue epidemic of 1918. SUpposedly, a completely pacifistic run is possible (but hella difficult)

PoE 2 and Greedfall for next year's "looking forward to it" so far. PoE2 because they promised to fill out the companion stories at least, and Tyranny 2 is not on the horizon.
Greedfall because I love Technomancer so much & Greedfall seems much like it, only with the ability to customize the PC even more, and play a female.
Keeping an eye on DoS2 still, undecided.
Looked at, got excited about, then cooled off after seeing the reviews on ELEX.

Looks like it might be good if they can avoid the "explorers are all murdering rapists who want to spread diseases and genocide everywhere" trope.

Definitely waiting for PoE2, I even backed it during the crowdfunding campaign. Same. Also backed Kingmaker, which looks really good (based on the Pathfinder RPG)

I do not own Consoles either, so I am playing Technomancer on PC, and probably will end up picking up the Mars War Logs and maybe even Bound by Flame (the later though with a question mark)
@tzeenchianapostrophe if you do play ELEX, notes on what the heck it is after all, that can be understood by the folks that did not play Gothic (which is like 90% of the reviews on Steam) would be appreciated. The graphics is not the best, I get it, and the main character is non-negotiable.

The graphics is not the best, I get it, and the main character is non-negotiable. Sure. Though it might take me awhile to form definite impressions on the game as a whole. If this is anything like the Risen games, things are going to take awhile.
So yeah, graphics are definitely not current, though they are somewhat better than in the Risen games. And what little dialogue I went through wasn't very exciting to say the least (it's a rather dry affair).
I suspect that this game will scratch the RPG itch for me, but not much more than that.
I am getting an impression it is like BG1 only gutted from custom Bhaalspawn, companions and fun dialogues. About the only upsides I've noticed commented on so far is the roll on double tap (peeps hate it, but I like it, I hate non-directional rolls and having to hold down buttons), not much loot, and, well, nobody commented on the blessed crafting, so perhaps it's not there... so, I dunno, might be an okay action-adventure mob-grinder to try maybe a year or so down the road if they patch it up for the sake of the setting.

The more elaborate reviews I’ve seen for ELEX all sound rather lukewarm. Can’t say it’s grabbed my attention so far, what with the open world craze and ensuing exhaustion. On happier news, I’m almost done with Dragonfall. My previous impression of it still stands: it’s a great game, one of the best RPGs I’ve played in a while. I might elaborate on that once I finish it. Maybe you should give it a try, @carefull? Its combat system is similar to but simpler than D:OS2, and it is a much shorter game at that, so you could use it as a trial run. I got it dirt cheap on a GOG sale; retrospectively, I almost feel bad I paid so little for it

Maybe, I dunno. The visuals are a bit off-putting, tbh, unlike Tyranny and DOS2. I dogeared it on the wishlist and will see if I want something rpg while going through my AC stash. I am pretty sure I am getting Mars War Logs once the sales hit, probably Bound as well. So, I am, like good for a year...
Overall, I am hopeful with seeing Spiders games, and, well, this ELEX, that good enough 3D will start emerging and less of OW and more of short, concise good story games with choices instead of wandering the landscapes looking for shit to do.
What I really want is a marriage of Tyranny's economical faction and descisions writing and Technomancer art style with a customized protagonist (added races that are a take on modified humans, rather than Dwarves and elves) and companion cast from either, in exotic settings, in a 30 hours per run format.....

There aren’t a lot of Bioware style RPGs, and therefore not many that fit those exact qualifications. But you like MMOs, right? Maybe this one covers a lot of what you’re looking for?

I did like SWTOR very much, and I plan to find a MMO that will interest me after I retire or if I get laid off, but until my time is my own, I will not play MMOs. It is just not good for someone with work/family. plus, well, the two MMO I tried that were not Swtor had a way poorer single player experience, so Swtor really is unique. And, well, I am afraid I am getting too old for the MP elements nowadays. I dunno. So far I do have a lot of games to play yet, so I am pretty happy.

I pre-ordered the pc version of Elex off Amazon but it appears to be in some delayed shipping date limbo..but that's def on my play list as somebody who got enough enjoyment out of the risen series.
Also for you guys playing shadowrun. For Dragonfall I def rec checking out the workshop adventure Antumbra saga. It's a real solid aventure with some fun characters. Then if you move to Hong Kong the creater has another mod on that one called The Caldecott Caper which continues your story from the other adventure.

So I managed to play a few hours of ELEX so far. *sigh* I... don't hate it?... That's probably the most positive thing I can say about this game. The combat is quite difficult. Some compared it to Dark Souls games, but I don't think that this is a good comparison. Dark souls games at least have tighter controls. ELEX most certainly does not. I found that playing on normal, I got killed rather often, as it doesn't seem like the level of enemies on the way to quests you get while rather low level is in any way designed to be a fair challenge to said level, at least I don't think so. In short, I found that it is rather easy to die on normal difficulty, and currently I'm playing on easy (which is rather rare for me). The game doesn't really teach you a lot of things you probably need to know, like crafting for example, not was it obvious to me at least. In short, there are quite a lot of negatives to this game, however it does have a certain charm, and some people with particular tastes might even really enjoy it. So, what's enjoyable? That it's more difficult than games normally are, or there is more to it?

In short, there are quite a lot of negatives to this game, however it does have a certain charm, and some people with particular tastes might even really enjoy it. I watched about 7 hours of it. Melee combat is rather rigid. There're alot of mobs scattered around. It's a good thing protag has a jetpack but then, you can find yourself facing an even worse mob when you fly to the upper deck, thinking you've made your escape from those on the lower deck. The streamer I watched snagged a companion of a different faction 5 hours in. He didn't have to equip the companion, he already has good gear and proves it by taking down the mobs that have been making it tough for the player. Despite the emphasis on factions, there is zero reaction when player brings companion to the faction he is presently friendly with. I was expecting something but there's nothing. The companion is invisible to the rival faction. This takes away story immersion. The open world looks fine but it's off putting for me. The presentation (chars, etc) and the combat is not attractive, to me. HZD is also open world but it feels more vibrant and the combat is dynamic compared to Elex.

So from what you have seen you would not recommend it? I had put it on my steam list but thinking wait for sale. I'm not qualified to recommend anything. I'm putting down my impressions and why I know it's not for me. It's subjective, personal preference. I would suggest you watch gameplay on Twitch or youtube if you wish to know more about this title. CohhCarnage is the one I go to for game play because he has a brisk practical engaging way of playing games. His game play pacing is fast, unlike some other streamers who could spend 20 minutes or more meandering on other things or talking to chat. I'm not saying they're doing anything wrong but strictly to find out game play for new games, I always go to CohhCarnage. For game reviews / criticisms, I go to other people.

So, what's enjoyable? That it's more difficult than games normally are, or there is more to it? It's rather difficult to answer this question. I suspect that there might be an element of nostalgia involved. (for people who enjoyed piranha bytes games in the past at least)
The game, as far as I played anyway, is an open-world game with a lot of busy-work, sub-par combat, flat plot without too much to make it stand out, forgettable characters, boring dialogue. It's... not a very good game. And as for the technical aspects, like one reviewer said, it's like the game was made in 2006.
That said, if you come into the game with an understanding of what it is and suitably low expectations, you might actually enjoy it to some degree.
So again, my recommendation is to wait for a sale. I simply don't think it would be worth the full price for most people.
Piranha Bytes games in a nutshell...some good ideas, but overall poor execution. Their best asset is faction system and exploration where item placement feels more "handplaced" than in most open world games( even if they're very lacking in other aspects). They must have invented time machine, their games look at least 10 years back.

Thanks, appreciate the PoV. Some folks do comment that they like the story and the characters are really good, so I was getting divided. I think it's a firm pass for me, just does not have enough of anything by the sound of it.

All your base are belong to us - Zero Wing Took an arrow in the knee - Skyrim My face is tired - Andromeda Boob physics! - Elex I can't help but laugh at the stream of comments on the twitching bosom of every female the protag talks to. I'm pretty sure the viewers were just having fun.
