Both Hoi4 and Stellaris. I posted my recent playthough with the new Stellaris DLC in the other game thread. Development on the new HOI4 DLC has been super slow though. Nice to see they finally started putting out Dev Diaries though, a supply overhaul should be great. I checked the other thread, but it is too chaotic for my tastes. Maybe one day.
I stopped playing Hoi4 just before Man the Guns came out. I didn't like the direction they were heading, too much fluff and too little AI development. I kept playing Stellaris though, I believe Megacorp was the last DLC I got.
Both games are still getting more DLCs, so I wonder where are they now? How much better have they gotten? I used to frequent the Paradox forum, but haven't in ages.

I’d say the game has gotten better over the years. It’s a little more complex now than it was, but not incredibly more so.
The single largest change since Man the Guns was making fuel a resource.
From what I understand there are only two AI programmers and the second was brought in about two years ago. I think the HOI4 team overall is around a dozen people and is the smallest one at Paradox.
The biggest change to Stellaris since Megacorp is the addition of the Galactic Community in the Federations patch. Overall my feeling is that Stellaris is treated better than HOI4.
I only browse the PDX forums a little when news about DLC comes out and don’t post. It’s not the dumpster fire that the old BSN was after the ME3 endings but the forum seems to expect too much from such a small team. With the new Barbarossa update in the works they are complaining about Italy not being reworked.

With the new Barbarossa update in the works they are complaining about Italy not being reworked. The funny thing is, I played HoI3 extensively and took the time to write a fairly long script mod to improve the German AI. I was tired of seeing the AI fail time and time again; it was annoying when playing an Axis country like Italy. And it worked, Germany really stepped up it's game, but in the end it was all for nothing, because the theatre AI was still thick as a brick. And it seemed that the same AI was carried over to HoI4, so I gave up. It was stupid to omit fuel, at least they added that. They are a small company and I would love to support them, but their prices are at AAA -levels, so.. I would like to get La Résistance and Man the Guns, but that'll set me back about 40 bucks. Or, I could skip Federations and get Necroids and Nemesis; that would make 28 quid. I bet the latter gets me more bang for buck? I do like Stellaris more.
I see you have been around for quite some time! I've been lurking BSN since forever.

That seems to the be the general problem with the AI in my view. The production scripts do their own thing and the combat scripts do their own thing and none of it has an overarching goal to tie it all together. My worry, which will probably happen, with the supply system update is that the combat AI will not focus on taking railroads/depots but will instead mindless advance across large fronts like it does currently. Between La Résistance and Man the Guns the latter is my favorite. Building and designing ships can be fun, even though I find it hard to get the AI to engage in large surface battles. So maybe it’s historical as well. I have Federations and Nemesis but not Necroids. I’ll pick up that during the next Steam sale. Both Federations and Nemesis play off of each other with the Galactic Community. Federations has more of the “good guy” interactions and Nemesis more of the “bad guy” ones. They are very complimentary. I think you'd get more out of Stellaris DLC. The general rule I believe is that if the DLC is a year or more old it goes 50% off during Steam Sales. 6 Months to a year is 25% off and no discount if its newer than that. The next major steam sale should be in July. I lurked the original Bioware forums, at least I think they were the original, way back in the day for KOTOR mods and guides. Got into the ME series shortly after ME2 came out and have stuck around the different BSN versions since, mostly lurk though. Thinking about those old forums hits me with nostalgia haha.

That's the problem with scripts. For them to be prepared for different outcomes, you are going to need a lot of lines. And in the case of Clausewitz engine, a lot of script lines really bog the engine down. It's okay, if it's a one time event, but something like the production script is read all the time.
Oh, I bet this is exactly what the AI ends up doing. That's what it has always done.
And this is exactly why I dug up this old thread; to get advice from someone who knows his PDX games. I thank you kindly! I will take your advice to heart and wait for the inevitable Steam sale and buy all three, Federations, Nemesis and Necroids.
That's when I started lurking BSN! I'm sure I would still be lurking if it wasn't for the pandemic.

I found out, that contrary to popular belief, it is possible to play Hearts of Iron 2 on Windows 10. It takes a while to do, but it can run at 1920x1024 resolution. There are different versions of the game however, Steam, GOG and the old physical copies, so ymmv. I used the good old coasters. Here's how: 1. install Hoi2 Doomsday 2. install Hoi2 Armageddon 3. update Armageddon to 1.2 4. update Armageddon to 1.3 beta 2 Point 4 is essential, as the update includes the high resolution UI images. Version 1.2 won't work. The updates can still be found at forum.paradoxplaza.com5. Locate your installation folder and create a shortcut for Hoi2.exe 6. right click the shortcut > properties 7. in the target, write: [your drive]:\Hoi2\Hoi2.exe WINDOWED 8. still in the properties, click tab Compatibility 9. check: Run this in Compatibility Mode for Windows 7 10. check: Reduced Color Mode and choose 16-bit The author for the hoi2reschanger has given up long ago, but the utility is still downloadable here: bit(DOT)ly/2Ch6CDA 11. Put the hoi2reschanger to the main game folder. 12. Run the utility in Command Prompt: [your drive]:\Hoi2\hoi2reschanger Hoi2.exe 1920 1024 And you're done. That didn't take long at all.

An addendum to my post above:
If you are weird like me, and prefer the 1.2 version over the 1.3 update, there is a solution to make it work.
1. install Hoi2 Armageddon as usual 2. update to 1.2 3. write a short batch file: Open Notepad and write
cd /d G:\hoi2 hoi2.exe WINDOWED
where G:\hoi2 is your installation drive and path. Save as .BAT file and use it to run Hoi2.

FWIW, I have and use Windows 10. The GOG version of HOI2 works well on Windows 10. The Steam version had resolution problems. Our HoI2 discs are somewhere really safe and neither of us can remember where, so they are really, really safe.

Our HoI2 discs are somewhere really safe and neither of us can remember where, so they are really, really safe. For any older game I would always recommend trying to get the game from GoG over anywhere else. I learned the hard way that Valve doesn't care if the games work properly or not and GoG at least attempts to make sure all the games are running even if they are emulating them with something like DOSBox. Jade Empire was a game I could never to work on Steam and when it was released on GoG I never had a problem with it.

Our HoI2 discs are somewhere really safe and neither of us can remember where, so they are really, really safe. I did extensive research, and the GOG version seems to be the better of the two for sure. But it requires the 1.3 patch to work in Win10, and I had a vague memory, that I didn't like the patched version back in the day. So I went ahead with the physical copies.
And when I say physical copies, I mean disc images that I made years ago. The actual physical discs are stored away in an equally safe place.

I've never been a big Crusader Kings fan, as Stellaris was always more my preference, though a certain World of Darkness mod for CK3 has my interest piqued. I will be curious to see how it incorporates the new expansions and DLCs.

I will be curious to see how it incorporates the new expansions and DLCs. Oh I absolutely love both series! Mostly because I find them the easiest for roleplay purposes, either as a medieval character or alien race. And CK3 is picking up in terms of mods, it seems. Like, there's already a Lord of the Rings mod, plus a Godherja: The Dying World, which positively surprised me, being a fantasy conversion in an entire new fantasy world. The one everyone's waiting, though, is of course the ASOIAF\Game of Thrones one. I swear it seems like half the people that tried out CK2 did it because of this mod. There was even a World of Thedas mod for CK3 in the works but it was abandoned unfortunately.

Victoria 3 has my interest.
I know it's always a battle in the community between streamlining and depth but I hope they make the game more approachable like I found HOI4 and Stellaris to be.
The time period is fascinating and I really wanted to play Victoria 2 but it just looked a little too complicated to me.

The time period is fascinating and I really wanted to play Victoria 2 but it just looked a little too complicated to me. Victorias have been the most complicated PDX games, I admit. And they have a bit of a learning curve for sure.
HoI4 has that weird feeling that, they took cues from HoI2, but went a bridge too far. It could be the best in the series, but I like to micromanage, and manually commanding the units is too tedious without a proper OOB. Plus the theatre/front AI is incompetent, so you have to micro and let the AI handle it.

I just picked up CK3. Any suggestions or recommendations? I can just say, don't treat it as a typical grand strategy game - treat it more like a text-based RPG. Make choices that make sense for your character, even if they do not give you direct advantages. CK is my favourite PDX series exactly because of this delicate balance between strategy and RP factor. Also, CK3 is the only PDX game where you don't really have to worry about losing land or seeing your realm broken up in succession, since that's intended game behaviour for the first centuries of a campaign. And you don't need to finish a campaign up until the very last year in the game (1453) if you feel you've already accomplished what you wanted to do. Other than this, the same general advice for any PDX game: take time to study the UI, game mechanics, and do not worry that you might lose your first campaigns. Also, CK3 actually has a decent tutorial, it helps with most of the major stuff in the game.

I just picked up CK3. Any suggestions or recommendations? Like the previous poster said, don't play to "win" (there's no win condition anyway!). Roleplay and enjoy the unfolding story. The Ireland tutorial is probably the best place to start. For a second game I recommend starting as a smaller vassal in one of the larger realms; the internal politics and the sense of progression can be quite compelling. Instead of territorial expansion, a personal goal I particularly enjoy and that doesn't translate to most other strategy games is putting your dynasty in as many thrones as possible, even if you are not ruling them yourself. There are mechanical benefits, but keeping up with what that other branch of the family is getting up to halfway across the world is pretty fun on its own.

I've been playing for a couple of weeks, now, and just started a new game with what was meant to be a small kingdom that spread its dynasty over Europe. I married the brother of the King of West Francia right away, and befriended the big king so he wouldn't try to eat my little holding.
When he died, my husband inherited Aquitaine, half his brother's giant kingdom. Hubby promptly died and my son and heir became an independent ruler who could slaughter me (but won't, apparently). I lost control over his marriage prospects and my grandchildren's education. At 72, I show no signs of dying and the grandkids are getting old enough to marry. Son's first wife died, leaving one grandson a little county between the kingdoms that's part of Danelaw so he's vassal to some random Nord guy across the channel. Son married some random floozie as soon as he was free and started giving in to peasant revolts so losing territory.
In short, pay attention to succession, as early game rules will do some awkward things. Also, don't make too manyalliances. That AI will call you into war after war and you need those resources for internal strife and expanding to get your surprise twins at the age of 45 some land so they don't break up your kingdom!

Anybody here play Surviving Mars? I've enjoyed it quite a lot. Yeah I enjoyed it, many covid hours whiled away building my Martian infrastructure. Education micromanagement (pesky kids and schools) a bit of a pain though. Overall a good enjoyable experience. Last playthrough in August but I believe there's new dlc and underground mechanics now so I'll maybe go back and try that out (although "below and beyond" has terrible reviews).

hours whiled away building my Martian infrastructure It's a time sink for sure. I think it's pretty manageable though. And you can just paint with a broad brush if you choose. For a PDX game it has a variety of playstyles, I was pleasantly surprised. below and beyond" has terrible reviews Yeah, not touching that one. I watched LPs and the DLC took a weird turn; not my thing. Green Planet though is a must.

Never played any Paradox games before since my PC sucks and I game exclusively on console (apparently my brother has been really into Paradox games for a long time though), but I recently got the ps4 version of Stellaris and... holy shit is this game awesome. I've probably put 20 or 30 hours into it and I feel like I've barely even scratched the surface of understanding all of even the basic game mechanics.
I really wish they would release more of these games as console ports, if Stellaris is any indication of the quality of their other games.
