A subjective and pointless question really.
We have good games, sure, few of them were innovators in my book and a couple of years from now, will be forgotten or simply remembered fondly.
To me,the mark of a strong year is pure innovation across all platforms. 2007, 1996,and 1987 would be candidates for that to me if we really had to choose.
But as I said at the top, a subjective and pointless question in the end.

Maybe. A lot of games but only HZD, Divinity Original Sin 2, Total War Warhammer II stand out in my list. yea hthere haven't been many that have caught my eye aside from DOS2 and the regular sports offerings but I don't really count those much mostly because they come out every year. If it hadn't been for MEA and Battlefront 2 I',m not suer I'd have bought any games this year tbh. As I've not found any of them interesting enough.

It’s an okay year. Andromeda and Lost Legacy delivered, but titles I was looking forward to ended up bombing in many ways:
Persona 5 was a mess. Story and characters just did not work and the dungeons sucked.
AC: Origins was more Witcher than AC and really screwed up on being an origin story. Awful story.
BotW was a complete and utter dumpster fire. One of the worst gaming experiences I’ve ever suffered through.
Prey... holy hell that was an excercise in frustration. I usually enjoy that style but this game just failed to stay engaging in the face of tedium.
I guess Destiny and the yearly sports titles were alright, and I’m going to see about Noer, SoW, and EW2 soon. But it can compare to 2001, 2009, or 2010.

I liked Prey but hated the ending.
I loved Andromeda, and Torment:Tides of Numenera.
I haven't played any of the rest. And most of them which are apparently great are platform exclusives.
There isn't much which interests me in 2018 so far though...

+ Wolfenstein 2 The New Colossus : This is the FPS game i was waited for so long with impressive graphics and fast paced gameplay. The Gore and Violence in this game is above everything and i am very grateful that it is NOT censored. This is how a game should delivered. And FPS with interesting characters, enjoyable story and cutscenes. Tons of collectibles, Perks, Weapon upgrades, Side Quests !! and a fully playable reskinned Wolfenstein 3D classic included.

I would say 2017 was an excelent year for japanese games, but western games are in serious trouble. Honestly, the only western games that seem to have recieved critical acclaim and sold well were horizon zero dawn and AC Origins. The rest either recieved average reviews or sold poorly, if not both. Wich is not something bad if you ask me. The japanese deserve to take over the gaming industry after providing so many games with excelent stories and enjoyable gameplay experiences while western game devs are buried in greedy practices, lazy development or weak storytelling.

AAA Japanese game development is dying quite quickly. Most developers have moved over to the handheld. This has probably been the first okay year for Japanese games in about a decade. Inefficient development practices and consoles becoming more like PCs are partly to blame for killing the advantage they once had. For a country that used to rule game development a couple of decades ago, the state of game development in Japan breaks people's hearts. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ For RPG fans this year was a good year. Very surprisingly Japan (for the first time in a while) put out multiple JRPG hits. Divinity OS 2 has to be my pick though, an amazing experience.

I have to agree with this (surprisingly). I swore off JRPGs after the horrid release of the original FF12 on PS2 (for a myriad of reasons), only to end up playing them again this year due to the massive disappointment Western RPGs have become. Indy Western RPGs are still well done, but they sadly can't overcome the shit of the AAA industry. Side note: Divinity Original Sin 2 is not a JRPG.

Stopped after FF12, started again this year ... I can honestly say that you didn't miss much. ATLUS put out some good SMT RPGs Sega released Valkyria Chronicles for the PS3 (but none of the sequels were any good) and that's about it.

My pick of the RPGs this year was Divinity OS 2.

Yakuza 0 Gravity rush 2 Tales of Berseria For Honor Horizon Breath of the Wild Persona 5 Mass Effect: Andromeda Nier Injustice 2 Tekken 7 Nioh Divinity Original Sin 2 Night in the Woods
From all these games, there is none that didn't entertain me this year. P5, BotW, NieR, Nioh and NitW are my favorites but I'm glad I gave them all a shot.
2017 is packed.

Persona 5 alone makes this the best year in gaming ever. That game is the best of all time, although stating that is misleading because it suggests incorrectly that P5 should be judged against other games. The game's core message is so moving that it is more appropriately compared to the best works from other forms of art, eg. the Mona Lisa, Schindler's List, and The Creation of Adam.

Would not go that far, but it's easily the best year in gaming since the new tens since it's been a consistently good year, for indies and Japanese games. Step it up western AAA companies.

I would like to add a game to the awesome game list. Hand of Fate 2. A fine example of a game being awesome, w/out loot boxes. And the fact Senua's sacrifice turning a profic, so non-loot box games can still be profitable. Just say'n

how to nail anime waifus? Adults abusing power. I didn't mind the theme (I thought the treatment of it was a bit childish and superficial) except I thought it got shoved down the audience's throat the whole damn game.

So many good games this year, almost reminds me of 1997-2004 and 2010. Would be a great gaming year if Star Wars Battlefront 2, Call of Duty: WWII and MEA weren't disappointing. I haven't got most of good 2017 titles I hear good things about. Just got Tyranny recently! I want to get South Park: The Fractured But Whole, Forza Motorsport 7, Total War: Warhammer 2, Divinity: Original Sin 2, ARK: SURVIVAL EVOLVED, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 3. www.pcgamer.com/ark-survival-evolved-review/www.pcgamer.com/forza-motorsport-7-review/
