Consider this a litmus test for whether or not you have good taste.
I am genuinely curious to know whether people genuinely enjoyed this movie, I know on Rotten Tomatoes it has a 93% rating buuuuuut I am sure everybody knows by now critic reviews are essentially useless being beholden to one master or another whether it be the advertisers or in the case of Youtube reviewers like Angry Joe, the fans, however now that it has been 2 years and the new movie is coming out I am interested in seeing what people ACTUALLY thought of the movie?
I remember when it came out there were some people gushing about it while others had the correct opinion, however among the people who actually liked it it seemed that it was mostly because of a "fuck George Lucas and anyone who does not like this movie is a prequel lover" sentiment rather than "this movie is legitimately good".
So did you actually like this movie and did you like it for reasons unrelated to your hate for George Lucas and the prequel trilogy?
Also what is up with Finn's voice? John Boyega actually has a Brittish accent and the Imperials usually have more Brittish sounding accents and since Finn is a part of the first order (Imperial remnants) why did they make him sound more like a stereotypical shouty black comic relief character? Find it a little bit funny that in a film where they really want everyone know that they stand for "progressive" values and try to shoehorn them in at every opportunity the director lets his own bias and racism slip by needing the black man to sound more like a "black man". Would love to see how that conversation went when Jar Jar Abrams was critiquing Boyega's performance, "Ok that was good John, but I think this time Finn needs to sound a little bit more 'urban'?"?

Yes and no. It had some good moments, but most of the "good" was due to it pulling nostalgic strings, not because of the movie's own merits.

There were many things I didn't like and I wouldn't call it a great movie, but overall it was still a good experience. My main problem with the movie was it's predictability and lack of originality. I felt like the old characters had too big roles when the more interesting new characters were kind of left too much in their shadow.

It was okay, but I liked the Rogue One better.
Overall, I have cooled towards SW original setting and characters after doing the KOTOR and SWTOR games. I just can’t bring myself to really care about the Skywalker Clan, and the whole uniqueness of each character makes me cringe. Hence, liking RO more & I much prefer the verse where both Jedi and Sith are commonplace in TOR.
I do not have ear for accents and i’ve liked Finn more than other characters tbh, because he felt more alive and less unique and destined and part of the One True Bloodline etc. Rei was okay. Was nice to see the Falcon take off again....
I mostly disliked the villain. Because, really, the Clone Wars did a decent job of making Anakin less pathetic, and this new guy, what's his name, Reno? just picked up where the good old Anakin left off and managed to take pathetic to the whole new level with such gusto....
Overall it was okay.
And, sheesh, op, it’s a touch too much, to ask a question about liking a movie this way.... It’s not a battlefield....

I guess there were two things that bothered me, one was the over-reliance on nostalgia. I think some of that was necessary in order to reconnect the film with Star Wars fans estranged by the prequels, but Starkiller base was more than a step too far.
The other thing that rubs me the wrong way was Rey’s easy access to force powers. With Luke, there was a sense of growth. In ANH, he started as a know nothing farm boy marveling at Obi-Wan’s mind trick. When he performed his first one in RotJ, we felt he had learned and expanded his abilities from those days. With Rey, she went from learning that the force exists to performing mind tricks in a couple hours. That really put me off because it didn’t feel earned.

I didn't have a huge expectation going into this movie. I wanted to see a new star wars movie, and I got that. I do kinda wish they didn't reset the the system, giving us another episode 4. But overall, I rather enjoyed it.
I am kinda hoping that rey and finn wind up as a couple. That is the one thing, I want this series to have. Not another thing of 'love can lead to pain, therefore its bad and should be avoided'.
I do like how finn tried to wield a light sabre, I like how there was a storm trooper with a melee weapon. I like how finn tried to run, but got pulled back in when rey was in trouble. I don't like a bigger death star, I don't like how poe was able to shoot 6 ties out of the sky when he first came in (I get that he's good, but he's not a freaking jedi), I don't like how they put the millenium falcon back in the series, I don't like the rolly astromech droid (didn't even look like it could fit a navicomputer in the chasis, much less make repairs).
I did laugh at the rolly droid a few times though.
Overall, I'd say I liked the movie. I didn't love it or anything, but it wasn't bad. I could have been so much worse then it was.

The EU died for A Newer Hope: Hope Harder. Mickey Wars can eat a dick. Also, I'll let this go for a little bit longer because of the poll. But discussion beyond that should go to teh Star Wars thread.

I really love the movie It borrows heavily from Episode IV, and I know/understand that, but imo it doesnt detract from it being an awesome, enjoyable and well-thought-out movie It introduced us to some really interesting, likeable and complex new characters on both sides of the light/dark divide. Kylo Ren, despite not being the strongest antagonist PHYSICALLY, is a strong CHARACTER. He is a lot more complex than most of the other dark side force users that weve seen in the movies. He has a subplot, he has his own struggles, and I LIKE that. He might not have Vaders imposing presence or his like... legendary status as a movie villain, but as a character hes very complex and I cant wait to see what they do with him in the future movies ALL of the characters in The Force Awakens, imo, are very awesome. No matter how strong/weak they are in combat or whatever, I feel as if theyre strong characters, definitely some of the best in the star wars movies in my opinion The action scenes are awesome (the millennium falcon/TIE fighter scene on Jakku ), the visuals are awesome... there are a FEW things Id change if I was given the opportunity to, like the completely far too obvious Nazi symbolism and R2D2 having the second piece of the map, Id also change Starkiller Base to something more original, BUT it was a fun movie anyway, and is one of my favorites in the Star Wars series

others had the correct opinionThere's no such thing. But yeah I liked episode 7, but I also liked the prequels, and am not afraid nor embarassed to say it. But from every Star Wars movie since Empire, I like Rogue One the best so far. I would rate Ep VII between II and III, just like Return (VI), but I rate it higher then 'Jedi', because of Ewoks, and the Jabba's Palace-part going on and on and on. The Force Awakens had a lot of space magic, even by Star Wars standards, and yet another planetkiller gets a bit old. I like the concept, but it is even less plausable then the Deathstar II exploding above Endor, and not fucking up it's ozone layer. But I like the characters, the special effects, the pacing. It was highly entertaining to me.

Hey, Han and Leia return to Star Wars!
...only to tell us what the plot is. It's so blunt "tell instead of showing" that it's hard to imagine making it any more obvious.
Another deathstar, another weird kid going bad for no reason, etc.

I remember when it came out there were some people gushing a bout it while others had the correct opinion, however among the people who actually liked it it seemed that it was mostly because of a "fuck George Lucas and anyone who does not like this movie is a prequel lover" sentiment rather than "this movie is legitimately good". Would love to see how that conversation went when Jar Jar Abrams was critiquing Boyega's performance, "Ok that was good John, but I think this time Finn needs to sound a little bit more 'urban'?"? Ah so you're one of those people. As for me personally I loved the movie. It is one of my favorite movies of all time and my second favorite SWs movie. And no, I do not hate George Lucas or the prequels (Episode III is my third favorite SWs movie)....though on the other end of the spectrum Attack of the Clones might be the worse movie I have ever personally seen.

But rey and fin def had chemistry. Hey! Phasma and Reys relationship just was never shown, do you think Phasma lowered the shields unwillingly??? She ofc did it because she loves Rey And we dont know what happened during the times Kylo wasnt interrogating Rey! Also Finn and Poe definitely had MORE chemistry

Star Wars has been crap for years now. It's why I abandoned the franchise and haven't looked back.
In my time I've figured that not everyone agrees with the correct opinion: IMO, it's just more sinners I get to smite after my ascension.

I don't like the movie, but I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoyed some parts of it. The problem with force awakens is that it's too much of a copy cat to be given any credit, and Rey (totally not a mary sue) isn't the best type of protagonist. I'm actually looking foward to the last jedi way more then I was for the previous movie. At least this time they seem to be sticking for an original plot and Rey will finally recieve some flaws.

Yes. It got someone like me, who liked Star Wars but wasn't a real 'fan' per se, to actually be a bit invested in it, because I actually felt like the characters were human beings in this one.

Hah. Correct opinion. That's funny right there.
I actually love the film, though it had that whole Abrams pacing issue that generally makes his movies problematic, like things happening far too quickly or some things just happening to expedite the plot (like Phasma just handing over the shields). As annoying as I've always found the prequels, I've generally been indifferent toward them. That said, as poor quality as I thought they were, they were at least adequate in providing material for what I thought was a very solid series (Clone Wars). Personally I'm rather glad Disney took this shit over (and that the EU is now a spare parts bin), and I'm even more amused that Disney may actually acquire Fox. Maybe X-Men will finally not be garbage.
"Urban"? Get the hell outta here.

Actually its funny now that I think about it, and I am sure I have mentioned this before, one of the things that gives me a huge chuckle is when people go all "Star Wars TFA sucks because its a carbon copy of ANH" And yet in the same breath, or in a later post, say "Kylo Ren sucks because he isn't Vader." Riiiight.
