I am sure we have all played games that have received high praise from the critics and/or among general populace that you feel just don't deserve the praise they have been given, what games do you think are highly overrated? Please note that "overrated" does not necessarily mean "bad", it just means they have been rated higher than they deserve, also "overrated" is not to be confused with "overhyped", while games like No Man's Sky or Fable may have been overhyped their critical reception was far lower than what their hype would suggest meaning they were not overrated, unless of course you think that even as low a score as they got it was still higher than they deserved.
Also please note that in order for you to actually comment on a game in this thread you actually have to have played it, it is fine to dislike the concept of a game to the point you have no interest in trying it, however you can't really comment on the quality of a game unless you have played it for yourself.
To get this thread started I think I will put out the Last of Us, not a bad game by any stretch but far from being as brilliant as everyone suggests, I think everyone was taken in by that heavily scripted vertical slice of "gameplay footage" shown at E3 that shows the enemy and the protagonists reacting organically to every bit of stimuli like the gun running out of bullets like a scripted movie scene and made up their mind there and then that this game would be a masterpiece and nothing not even the actual game could convince them otherwise, just look at what happened to that reviewer who dared give the game an 8/10, loads of death threats from jackasses who had not even had the chance to play the game yet themselves who prematurely decided that this game was a masterpiece and nothing short of a 10 was an insult.
The truth is while the game was technically proficient it really wasn't really anything much beyond your standard linear 3rd person cover shooter with a fairly paint by numbers movie of the week style story, sure Naughty Dog are great at making gameplay look good like a scripted action scene but there really isn't much of substance here beyond moving from cover to cover shooting the bad guys in heavily scripted linear set pieces, if this was an actual movie rather than a movie that is shallowly disguised as a game there is no way it would get any where near as high critical praise.
So what games do you think are Overrated?

Hm,first game that comes to mind is Killing Floor. Some of my buds used to to play it regularly so i tried to jump on the bandwagon. It even has an overwhelmingly positive rating on steam...What could go wrong? Well, nope.I probably didn't even spend more than ten hours on it.Thankfully i got it on sale... I've also tried playing a match of League of Legends(it was HUGE here, maybe it still is,i dunno).I went into it with a negative mindset to be honest, since i despised Dota years ago.Why do people even bother? Being a person that gets bored of things very fast(if it keeps my interest,it's for life. Thanks,Bioware ),i really despise such games, where you pretty much do the same thing over and over again. Can't find any charm in that. Pretty sure my consensus would be the same with any games of a similar genre...

Prey. I looked at the reviews, and they were glorious. Literally everyone raved about how it is innovative and immersive, and so clever. Everyone praised it to high heavens. The Trailer also showed a character in a space suit making a jump in space, and the screenshots looked really exciting. Well, I picked it up, dove in... and...
When the game started it was quite captivating, with the character intro, and a flight over a city. I liked how the setting subtly changed in the beginning and was ready to investigate... but after a few hours of running from room to room, picking banana peels and eating apples it got old.
It's just tedious and boring if you are used to games with well, story and actions, and, yes, yes, the breadcrumbs. The Prey's description promises something rather exciting, but the reality is... human interiors with references to modern times (space exploration, Clinton's poster, I think? or maybe it was Kennedy, I dunno...) and nothing particular spectacular, certainly not a suited assault rifle wielding cool protagonist jumping at a space monster in space. It is heavily weighed towards solving puzzles and carefully exploring inch by inch, forgetting nothing.
In my experience, it also proved to be not so much a first person shooter, but more of a first person wrencher, because the gun you pick runs out of bullets in 8 shots just after you thought you'd be shooting finally. I literally died of surprise (and fantom) that this was it for bullets.
Five hours in the game, and I have met no characters at all save for a few random monsters to kill and bodies... I have never played a first person perspective before, and I found it not fun at all to not see your own character. I guess it saves budget, but I like to see an (alive) human face once in a while, or at least my own char's sweet B.
I still do not get what made people be all over it. Just... boring.

Most know what my first one would be... The Witcher 3. I just find it typical dark fantasy mediocrity with no revolution in side wuesting that is weirdly touted. It is no masterpiece and doesn’t even break a 6/10.
But it is nothing on tbe most overrated game of all time... Breath of the Wild. Not only does it lose the Zelda identity, but it rips off multiple franchises, does everything worse, and has several outdated mechanics that are laughable with the oraise they get from Nintendo die hards. Add in the terrible characters, story, and world building and you have one of the worst games this year and one of the worst gaming experiences I suffered through. It might be s 3/10 abomination at best.

Prey, Fallout 4, & Skyrim.
These are decent games, but they aren't worthy of the hype and praise they get imo. They all have glowing reviews & lots of fan boys/girls. But...they just don't deserve it. Fallout 4 and Skyrim, they are so open world, yet they are mostly busy work. I haven't beaten any of these games, and I just can't bring myself to care about any of them.

For current games I'd def put Breath of the Wild on top. As a big fan of past Zelda games this was my least favorite. Did not like many of the changes they made to gameplay. Survival elements, a tedious crafting system, breakable gear, less unique dungeons etc. Also I found it getting praised for many things other open world games got knocked for yet actually did better. Still an alright game but for me it didn't have that same Zelda feeling that I felt set that series apart.
And for a slightly older game yet still always high on the charts I gotta say GTA V. Everybody I know was playing it, saying how awesome it was so I finally rented it to see just how awesome it was. Got about half way in the story before I was bored to death. Sure the 3 dif playable characters was interesting, unfortunately I disliked each of them. Ya the heist missions and setting them up was cool, but most other missions were very basic. And the grand plot just wasn't very exciting. And gave up on online when I saw just how much you'd have to grind to really afford stuff, ya sorry never gonna buy shark cards.

GTA4. I think Rockstar gets a pass on very generic writing- as soon as something becomes popular on HBO, you know Rockstar will copy it. But GTA4 also had abysmal mission design and gameplay. That said, I stuck with it and played GTA5 and Red Dead. Turns out they do alot of stuff right. The quality of immersion in their games is second to none. There's an amazing attention to detail and mission design has steadily improved. So I'm happy I gave them a second chance.

-Far Cry 3: Not much variety in the open world, the villain called "Jar" is overrated, Most side quests are boring, loothunting even more so. Crafting is meh. And the fact of having a 'choice' at the end all of a sudden is bullshit.
-Baldur's Gate 1: My problem was playing that game AFTER having played through Planescape: Torment (which I adore), and BG1 felt so 'generic' so to speak. Not much depth, pretty straight-forward storyline, not that interesting side quests. Sure I know it was one of the first in a then-new type of party-based roleplaying games, but still...
-Amnesia: The Dark Descent: People make it out to be the scariest game ever, which I don't agree on. While it does have it's moments, I thought it fell a bit short when compared to Frictional's earlier games, Penumbra: Overture and Black Plague. And also their more recent installment, SOMA.

I actually played BG1 after having played BG2,and it totally felt stale and "generic",as you put it in, comparison. The conversation with the companions is really one of the basic ingredients that made BG2 a masterpiece imho.

Mass Effect 2. Maybe it's because I didn't play it until 2013, and it was one long continuous first time trilogy binge, but I really don't get the devotion this game has.
Sure it is a very good game and has some great environments and character beats, but the main plot is bobbins, the combat is meh, the inventory system is shot, the galaxy map is a real step down from ME1 etc.
It also sets up ME3 with an impossible task.

Jade Empire. It's considered a gem by many bioware fans, but after getting it for free on a origin promotion, and playing it, I felt it was relatively average. The atmosphere is good, and the lore is interesting, but it doesn't change the fact the game runs on an old ass engine, the gameplay is rather simple, with subpar combat animations and the voice acting is nothing special, with the actors doing just about effort to get the job done (mostly).

The Metal Gear Solid series? Don't get me wrong, I like it but some people act as if it's God's gift to humanity with incredible writing. I'll be honest, I found the writing to be atrocious at times Almost as if it was written by an edgy, 13 year old teen... Honorable mention would be Skyrim and Fallout as well

Skyrim.
I finished the story in about 20 hours, was consistently disappointed by the reactivity of the world to my in-game decisions and actions, and uninstalled.
For people who really love to role-play, in the vein that they are happy smithing in their shop attached to their home with their spouse working in the yard, I guess the game is awesome. I live a mundane life as it is, I don't need more mondaneity in my gaming.
In short - I know a lot of people that love Skyrim, and I will never understand it. The game is shit.

Skyrim is hands down the most overrated game I've ever played. I don't understand how my friends can continue to pour hundreds of hours into it to this day. The character creation and progression mechanics are ridiculously dumbed down from the previous installments (no attributes, no birth signs, no class skills, racial bonuses matter less, etc), which I find alarming in something that professes to be an RPG. The aesthetic of the game isn't much better; Skyrim has bland scenery, a generic soundtrack, and blatantly reuses voice actors to the point of absurdity. The combat is okay, but nothing special. Some of the writing is interesting, but individual characters are never fleshed out enough for me to care about them.

Dead Space - not even the prospect of dismembering zombie children could sway me to play it through. A somewhat unique idea that did away with it with its tasteless gore.

I generally don't like saying something is overrated since I think it's mostly subjective, but I don't think I got as much enjoyment out of Witcher 3 as some other people did. It's a good game and I liked most of the time I spent playing it, but it didn't really leave an impact on me like some of my favorite games have.

I think Skyrim, like Fallout 4, isn't really overrated at all. 95% of praise it gets is for the crazy amount of moddability the game offers, so you could basically do anything you want in it. I haven't heard many people people saying the vanilla game is so awesome. I personally think it's better than Oblivion and even dare to say it's better than Morrowind (which, while having a great main story line and a nice setting, is full of flaws, and most of the "dungeons" kind of sucked, and Cliff Racers...). Skyrim has to live up to a much higher standards however when compared to both of the predecessors. And not having 12-piece armor sets is the least of it's issues. Maybe I'm biased, but I don't think many people spend 300 hours in an unmodded Skyrim play through like I did.

I think most critiques target the rework of skills and "dumbing down" and woe with the story. While I share some of those views, the worlds they create are genuinely well-crafted, imo and Skyrim and Fallout IV took a couple of steps forward in that from Oblivion and Morrrowind.

Another vote for Witcher 3 here. Pretty to look at, but in every other aspect woefully unenjoyable. Combat is obviously shit, and the game bombards me with horrible dialogue and cutscenes. I honestly don't get it. It's trash.

I've never played Skyrim because of the abomination named Oblivion, from there I swore I'm not gonna play any Bathesda RPG. It is wide as an ocean and deep as a puddle. After 10 hours everything started to repeat itself. Same caves, same dungeons, same monsters, then after you level come the bandits with the glass armor, like really? If my build is good, there is nothing to keep me playing because the story is balls and everything becomes too easy. The variety of spells is minimal, there are almost no melee abilities, just swing the sword and thats it. Not to mention the shitty leveling system, when you can royally screw up your character very quickly. You can also royally screw your character in Diablo 2 with a bad build, but at least all skills there are combat oriented and crafting doesn't go into leveling like in Oblivion. From what I've heard later, Skyrim, FO3 and FO4 continue the same crap, if not making it worse.

Goes something like this...he wakes up, goes to the kitchen/chair, then eats, then to the mine or something to get some ore, then to the forge, pub after work, and whole thing resets next day. Same is with any other "role". Think people play it more as relaxing, First person +mods Sims experience. Weird. Outside of this: Dark Souls, definitely...extremely clunky/unrewarding gameplay mechanics, felt more like a game of patience. Blizzard, Rockstar, Bethesda, Naughty dog games in general...highly polished mediocrity ( well, remove "polished" from one, here).

Dragon Age Inquisition was a complete letdown with it's boring quests and big empty maps. The series sadly got more and more dumbed down. I loved Origins and still play it nowadays but i won't touch Inquisition ever again. Don't understand how that game got to be GOTY.

DAI a dumbed down game with some of the most boring side content I have ever seen in a rpg a large empty world the games bland protagonist and a underwhelming villain who had a strong threatening start at haven but then became a joke.
