As for amnesia, I am sorry, that as a plot device was so overused by Obsidian and BioWare that I pretty much rolled my eyes when I saw melbella mention that Geralt joined the line up. Yeah, I felt like I was playing the Nameless One all over again, except this time I had a name and other people actually knew who I was. I guess I haven't had much exposure to many games, but it seemed quite clever to me. Unlike asking Morrigan who Mythal is eh?

@carefull So the point of the sleeping is to get some sort of experience bonus? Lot of thugs attacking us mancers in the slums eh? Yup, you accumulated experience faster when rested. It will prompt you when Zach is tired. It also helps with fast forwarding the timer when the assignment requires to be done in daytime or nighttime.

When Revan did it in 2003, followed by Exile in 2004, followed by your NWN2 character in MotB... it started losing its charm. In 2007, Geralt really is the "oh, for god's sake, not AGAIN!"

I haven't played a single one of those games. If I continue being a gamer another decade maybe I'll be irritated by the trend. But what do you expect them to do? A new player who knows nothing about the world and themselves? amnesia seems better than having these random NPCs chide me for not knowing about "The Slums" when apparently Zach is FROM there! seems to be the alternative?

I like Origin stories and/or a foreword like in Technomancer to the Amnesia trick. The intro in Technomancer gives you a lot of salient points and they are not that bad in the dialogues. I also liked it in Tyranny where you can simply roll your pointer over a name or event they have in the dialogue and you get a pop up that reminds you who the character is, what’s that location or the event history. Sort of like on the fly Codex before you select your response. I don’t think I can take another game that tell me that the slate was wiped, and I should go rediscover my past crimes and atrocities, while trying to be a better woman... or doing more horrid things. Seriously, at some point I has become an amnesia plot connoisseur. KOTOR2 was my favorite take on it.

Or having a random nobody tell my human noble in Origins about that tournament in which I gave him a right thrashing despite me never having experienced the tournament in question nor having seen the character before this point. While it is true that Amnesia did get used a lot I don't think it bothers me as much as I can't deny it is an effective storytelling tool for setting both the player and the character in the same frame of mind, there are other methods of course from the sheltered childhood origin to setting the game in a foreign land that your character finds themselves stuck in for one reason or another, but there is no denying that amnesia can be a really effective plot device if handled properly. I am sure since this game is set on Mars the game if it wanted to could have made the character a colonist and a newcomer arriving from offworld in cryostasis to get around the fact that the player knows nothing about the setting or the characters (or not, I know nothing about the setting or the lore) or come up with another reason that fits in with the setting, that said I am pretty sure most games made today aren't really concerned with that sort of storytelling these days, I think the popular trend is to give the protagonist a fleshed out backstory and pre-existing relationships and feelings towards stuff and to hell with any sort of player immersion and agency to decide who their character is or isn't. I think most developers are too concerned with chasing after and emulate movie type storytelling instead of embracing the type of storytelling that makes videogames unique. But that side tangent out of the way what are your impressions of the game so far? Any good or worth checking out?

No, the setting very specifically does NOT allow for an outsider who’d just arrived to Mars. A beatifully crafter introduction instead introduces the setting. The character in Technomancer is fixed, like Geralt. His name is Zachariah Rogue-Mancer, and you go forward from where he is, as well as discovering secrets in his past and in the setting while making descision on his alliances, love life and the direction of the world in the end. The people who were important to his backstory are not forced upon him, as they come back into his life after a long period of isolation as he trained in the Technomancer place so he gets to know them from zero. He does not have any blood relatives. It is a bit similar to Hawke in that respect (save for enforced love of Hawke’s family), with stronger consequences in the ending, but not as strong as in ME. Actually, Bhaalspawn’s background is probably the closest in its nature to Zachariah, but with more subtle treatment of his mysteries.

So, you get companions. And you can talk to them "on the road" like you can in Origins. Got lost and visited the Slave Mutant Pens. A random scene occurred. All a bit horrifying, considering what we learn at the dome.

Oh my gosh, random citizen in the bar about the quest "unequal combat". The animations on her chest were @_@. They were up down, caved in, protruded out more... Scott was there when I learned about his mission but then he acted like he had no idea when I gave them to him Map is a little weird, but I'm getting used to it. I wish they would do a better difference between mission selected and missions in general. Like, at all.

David Ward. At first I thought he said he was disgusted because the soldiers had deserted at all. Now I see his softer side as he begs for his prior comrades' lives. Interesting.

Keeping in mind Ward's begging for the derserter, Boris's, life... I told him I'd arrest him. Boris declared he'd rather die a free man. And so he did.
Wonder if Ward, the companion, will see the difference *sigh* won't have made a friend there I suspect.
