I am able to play Daggerfall on a modern PC thanks to the XL engine, which allows all kinds of modern resolutions, plus a modern mouse+keyboard control mechanism.
Unfortunately, at the time of writing this, most of the links on the XL Engine home page are dead, and their forums seem to have been absolutely carpet bombed by Russian spammers. I hope the project isn't dead and work ceased on it, that would be a real shame. It allows me to play classic games such as Blood, Dark Forces and Daggerfall without any hassle.

There are dwarves in Skryim. They're called the dumner! Dwemer. But already extinct... Yep, the Dwemer. But they are not short and stocky. They are about the same height as a Dunmer and lean. They do have long beards and chose to live underground. If you play the game Morrowind you will see their ghosts. But the only reason they are called dwarves is because when they first got to Vvardenfel, there were giants that lived there and befriended them, the giants referred to them as 'dwarves' since they were small compared to a giant.

Dwemer. But already extinct... Supposedly. Dragons were considered extinct during the Oblivion era. Then many years later they returned. Same could happen for the Dwemer. Furthermore, Bethesda lore does not consider the Dwemer dwarves, but angry evil elves with beards. And GoldenGail3: Dumner are Dark Elves. (Shakes head). Young people. Skyrim is not Bethesda first Elder Scroll game, for us “old” people you need to go back to the days of Arena. I was aware of its existence, but never played it. My first Elder game was Morrowind, followed by Oblivion then Skyrim. Truth-be-told I enjoyed Oblivion far more then Skyrim and Morrowind. And to this day, “Shivering Isles” is the best DLC ever to be released. But let us play these cards fairly. DAO trumps Morrowind. Oblivion just barely trumps DA2. And Skyrim hands-down beats DAI. The problem with DAI is they spent far too much time using Skyrim as a back-drop for DAI then doing their own thing. If I want to play Skyrim, I’ll go play it. IMO, DA lore seems far more interesting, but when it comes to consistency Bethesda wins. Todd Howard, can be a tool. But at least he isn’t changing every single aspect of the game and highly respects the fans. When you play a Bethesda game such as Elder Scrolls or even Fallout, it feels like those games should be. You know what to expect but at the same time not know what to expect. When you go from DAO to DA2 that Dragon Age feeling is there. When it comes to DAI, that feeling is lost. Bethesda is good at doing their own thing and less worried about what everyone else is doing, whereas Bioware has this need to keep up with the Jones’. I hate to say it, but the clear winner is: Bethesda. If Bioware can pull their heads out of their asses and go back to a gritty adult RPG, to where your damn hands are not being held and stop worrying about what everyone else is doing, then they just might make it. I am also an oldie and Morrowind was my first TES game. But I agree with almost everything you just posted. The only difference is as much as I love DA:O and I love it a lot. I play the game almost yearly. But in my list it would be a 3 way tie between Morrowind = DA:O = Fallout: New Vegas. I enjoyed the lore of the Dunmer, Dwemer and even Nords had some interesting lore in that game. I enjoyed the political tensions between factions like House Telvanni and the Mages Guild. I enjoyed how factions were aware of each other. Dagoth Ur is my favorite all time antagonist in TEs, he was far more interesting than Mehrunes Dagon and Alduin. DA:O on the other hand has great lore also and I enjoyed all of the companions. My favorite part of BioWare and Obsidian games is the interaction with companions and with themselves. Some of the newer kids dislike the combat cause it's "slow", but I enjoy it. Though I did enjoy DA2's combat also. I love being a Grey Warden. I love how almost everyone stops what they're doing to cater to you. Morrigan is one of my all time favorite female companions next to Bastila and Viconia. I never played Mass Effect so I can't comment. In closing the only thing I prefer DA:I over DA:O is the ability to free roam and jump. I hate the invisible walls in DA:O, and the inability to jump down I have to go around. I

Yes. the Dwemers are "deep elves" – or something similar, not real dwarves. How I love Morrowind! One of my first RPGs on PC. I didn't understand one word in English, but I enjoyed blindly. Years later I replayed and laughed so much on my first PT.

Oh wow you definitely missed out if you never played Daggerfall. About as Elder Scrollsy a game as it gets, the game was absolutely MASSIVE, and completely open and free- wouldn't be so remarkable if it came out nowadays, but at the time it came out it was sort of mind-blowing. I imagine the graphics would be just brutally outdated if you went back and played it now, but if you enjoy Elder Scrolls games you probably would still get alot out of it. Just epic. Was hooked on Elder Scrolls forever after playing that game. And I agree about Oblivion/Morrowind>Skyrim, though this is probably more about Oblivion/Morrowind being great than it is about Skyrim being bad (it certainly wasn't bad, it was a very good game, it just wasn't quite up to the high standards of the previous ES games imo). Yes, I know I really wanted to play it, but sadly I was going through some personal issues. I feel the same way about Skyrim. IMO, I think what made it as such was too much was going on causing your character to be pulled in too many directions. And when you were able to close most of the issues, they were either resolved poorly or not at all. I am also an oldie and Morrowind was my first TES game. But I agree with almost everything you just posted. The only difference is as much as I love DA:O and I love it a lot. I play the game almost yearly. Well hon, to be honest, there are kids these days who have little to no patience even in games. They prefer getting whatever it is they want handed to them, then having the satisfaction of working for it. I too enjoyed the combat in DAO, and even DA2. DAI's combat was absolute garbage. Having the ability to jump in DAI, was more like, meh. Yeah, it made pathing a bit easier, but its not like I needed it or wanted it. Furthermore, yes, there were places I felt was an odd place for an invisible wall. Yeah, I never played Mass Effect either and have zero plans to do so - ever. Not one for space games. Hmm, you brought something up I never thought about before - best female companion. I'd probably go with Lilly. And for male, Anders and Oghren. But you know who the best character of all is? Sheagorath! Wes Johnson made that character epic.

Sheagorath! Wes Johnson made that character epic. Yeah, I also like Ohgren and Anders in DA:O and DA2. Leliana I like to but when I personally think of DA:O I remember Morrigan. As for Wes Johnson as Sheogorath, I agree. Like you I loved the Shivering Isles. Oblivion overall was pretty good. I just didn't like the GO NOW!!! Attitude of the main quest. In Morrowind they just dropped you off, there was no urgency to deliver the package. I know Dagoth Ur was a threat, but when the key npc's tell you take your time. I didn't feel rushed. In Skyrim Alduin reappears but if you choose to delay the quest no one mentions dragons and none are seen again. So no urgency. Another note about Wes Johnsohn. Did you know he voiced all Imperials in both Morrowind and Oblivion. He also voiced Lucien Lachance in Oblivion and Skyrim. Lastly he voiced Hermaeus Mora and Sheogorath in SKyrim. As for kids being impatient these days it's just some not all. The thing is the minority is the most vocal.

Overall Elder Scrolls has a much better and rich lore while also more uniqueness and background/world wide stories.
Now if we compare each game then goes like this imo.
Morrowind is slightly better than DAO but for a very tiny margin and when it comes to DA2 and DAI, well Morrowind pisses in both of them.
Oblivion is inferior than DAO nothing jarring there but superior than DA2 and DAI.
Skyrim is inferior than DAO and superior than DA2 and DAI

I feel like if DA:O and Skyrim had a baby it would end up being an amazing game. I get that Skyrim is an open-world type of game, DA:O isn't but DA:O has so much depth to the narrative, the story, the characters and the setting that it doesn't matter (plus the map system is a better fit for DA:O than an open-world one imo). If Skyrim had Origins' depth (and some things tossed in from Morrowind), it would be undisputed the best game of the PS360 era.

They're both fairly bland, generic fantasy worlds. If you like DA, you'll probably like Elder Scrolls.

They're both fairly bland, generic fantasy worlds. If you like DA, you'll probably like Elder Scrolls. Skyrim maybe, Oblivion definitely, but Morrowind wasn't bland or generic at all. It had giant mushrooms, floating jellyfish, robots, a prison carved into a hovering meteorite, a huge fence made of ghosts, pterodactyls everywhere, a city built into the shell of a giant crab, insects as a mode of transportation... Actually I think there's a great deal of weirdness to the Elder Scrolls universe, it's just that most of the games play it safe and relegate the exotic stuff to the margins (e.g. DLC).

Skyrim is not the same game as DA. They're not even remotely similar. In DA games, you have a real sense of what your protagonist and companions are like. Skyrim, though it has a storyline, is not at all character-based. Both games are fun but in entirely different ways.

Skyrim is my first Elder Scrolls game, so I have no idea how the rest of the TES games were by comparison. Which of the earlier games still hold up and are still worth playing? Morrowind is the best TES game. I believe that's the second in the series. I think the first is Daggerfall but I don't think I ever played it. Stylistically, it was different than what came after. Anyway, Morrowind is best. Good enough that someone took Oblivion and made a mod that turned Oblivion into Morrowind, or at least added it as an area to explore. Imagine if you could send Hawke to Denerim, or your Inquisitor to Kirkwall. It's that sort of mod for Oblivion.

There are no dwarves in Skyrim, which is lame! Yes, but there were. Morrowind touches on it in a pretty significant way.

The first was Arena, although I've not played anything before Morrowind. Morrowind's an amazing game - one of those things you never forget. OK, the combat isn't great, but the setting and backstory are my favourite in any RPG.

As far as character builds go, I like versatility to a point. One thing I find odd in Skyrim is that all races can do magic, yet all the villages seem to wary of mages and you don't see normal people using magic. It's probably like in every game: y our character is always a special snowflake :-) I still like Morrowind a lot, it really has flair. Never really got into Oblivion and abandoned it halfway down the road. What makes Dragon Age main characters any different from that?
