So I was toying with the idea of doing more Role-Playing Let's Plays for the website I write for, as we need a bit more content for our YouTube channel.
I tried experimenting with this a while back by recording Skyrim on my PS4, mostly as a dry test run of what it can be. The reception was lukewarm but I re-tooled the idea. Originally it was going to be a straight up, sort of voice-acted by me RP, but now I am just going to try and focus on a simply strict RP on my behalf without me being always "in character" as it lead to too much dead air.
The question now though....what game should be the test subject?
Since I know shit about video capture and all that i'll be learning it all on the fly...I have a capture device to help with getting footage but as of right now I am sort of still learning OBS. Once I am more confident in my video making skills I want to get some episodes in the can before I begin posting them.
So the question I have for all of you is simple, would you watch such a series at all? IF you do, what do you look for in such content. If not, what suggestions do you have for such content? What game should I start with? Any favorites?

RPGs take a lot of time. They key is that the player slips into the character and immerses into the character. I don't think that translates well to a recipient who just observes. It's probably better to edit out the buying/equipping, the menial stuff, the long walks to and fro the inventory chest, the uneventful stuff. Instead I'd suggest to have a narrator connecting the hotspots of the story and introducing the chapter-like let's plays where the character does something eventful and meaningful to the story/progression. Do a narrative.

In regards to talking "in character" leading to dead air. Maybe consider trimming the dead air? Cut some of the filler, leave in mostly the good stuff, write some amusing lines in advance (and practice delivery!). Not exactly my cup of tea, but I can see how something like this could be potentially amusing. The downside is a lot of unusable "filler" content that you are throwing away, so rather labor intensive. The issue is not only labor intensive, but it also leads to cuts of content and swaths of time between things like travelling and inventory and all that. One thing I thought about doing was inner-monologues in character, but that didn't work out so well as it's mostly the character talking to themselves was hated by the rest of the staff. What I was hoping to emulate is something similar to this, minus the editing flairs which would be done in post. Plus I get the feeling this is not scripted, but reactionary; I only do scripting for informative videos like that. The bigger issue though is that this doesn't work for a lot of games either. The Bethesda open-world stuff is perfect for it, but if I played Baldur's Gate, for example, it would be hard to translate fully as a full on in character performance. So it's more of a Playing of it with the RP thrown in at moments of choice, narrative, story, and the like. I think both are viable but I really think that the always in character version might be the better way to go because it's different. The trick is to figure out how to translate it for other games, or just leave that for bethesda titles and do a more standard play of the other games. Still, the latter is also a bit easier to do, in terms of editing and consistency, I just need to be entertaining on the mic to keep interest if i'm not in character and reading everything. Maybe do character voices.

I won’t watch let’s plays simply because when I have times for games, I want to play them myself. Reading text impressions in various threads is social and fun & implies interactions. I watch utube videos when I have problems in the game to see how to do things correctly.
Also, on a mobile device, utube videos are a huge cost for data use, so you can’t really do it when you are not on the gaming rig, so... texts always win for me.
Anyway, just being honest. Videos are just really unattractive to me save for specific tasks in the game or teaching you to play.
The only half-way at all thing that I might consider watching is a heavily edited, sped-up under 3 min long clips in the “Best of” for a game I have not played.

Want to be successful at let's plays? Find out what the most popular game is at the time and play that hoping that the high number of people typing the name of the game into the search bar stumble on your content, people love face cam footage of people playing scary spooky horror games so find out when the next 5 nights at freddy's game is released and start spamming that on forums related to the game, failing that if you are a woman you can always wear a low cut top and aim your web cam slightly lower which will get you a few views at least!
But in all seriousness I generally only really watch lets plays to get an idea of what a game is like and whether or not it is worth trying, or for helpful tips and tricks, but if I were to watch a let's play for entertainment value I think I would rather see something with a bit more of a creative element to it, something that allows you to tell your own story rather than simply reacting to a linear story provided to you, something with a bit more of a random element where the conclusion isn't always predetermined, something like the Sims or Xcom is pretty good in that regard where you can create your own characters and see what happens to them over the course of the game.
