A old person once told me back in the year 2014 before we The Expanse and Star Trek Discovery the reason why we didn't have a big space show was because a certain demographic was watching more TV. I thought he was full of crap! It was long thought that fantasy was a genre once thought reserved for geeks but Game of Thrones has garnered a huge audience. Perhaps a well written space opera with a huge budget could appeal to a diverse audience.
What would a space opera that would appeal to people who watch Star Wars movies and are not interested in Star Trek or the Star Wars EU books and video games be like?
Would it have aliens?
FTL space travel?
AI?
Would it have relevant themes? For example a sci fi universe where there is a star cluster with interstellar powers that are like America and Russia. Along with these huge interstellar empires there would be lots of solar systems that are independent of these superpowers and one of the solar systems is in chaos and is experiencing a civil war fought by different factions. An agent sent by an ancient advanced society like the culture is sent to diffuse the situation before it spirals into interstellar nuclear war.
Or would it be Mass Effect/Babylon 5 style with a All American military spaceship commander uniting the galaxy against an ancient threat?

Depends on what type of mainstream audience you're talking about, personally my choice would be to go for an adult audience and avoid the creative restraints of a family audience. Most Sci-Fi tv shows are far too tame in my opinion. I would really go out and out adult, no half measures.
My show would be dark, morally ambiguous with plenty of power struggles, plotting and scheming, murder, criminality, betrayal with ruthless anti-heroes, dark villains and rogue characters. In short to use Mass Effect terminology it would be more Renegade than Paragon. It's morality and tone would be the inverse of the virtuous underlying ethos of Star Wars and Star Trek, in fact it would be as if HK-47 had retired from assassination and embarked on a new career as a sci-fi writer.
It would be unapologetically violent, a mixture of Tarantino and John Wick with blood and gore. It would be brutal with plenty of sex and violence, a real gritty sci-fi show for adults. It would also have space battles, lot's of aliens, personal combat and exploration.

An agent sent by an ancient advanced society like the culture is sent to diffuse the situation before it spirals into interstellar nuclear war. Or would it be Mass Effect/Babylon 5 style with a All American military spaceship commander uniting the galaxy against an ancient threat? Speaking for myself: Yes it would have aliens, but they would not be the main focus. That would be expensive, and they'd probably just end up being Rubber Forehead Aliens anyway. Aliens on my show would be...alien. Some might be allies. Some enemies. But all would be weird and unknowable. More Vorlon than Minbari. I'd want much of the speculation on the show being about the nature and motives of the alien characters. There'd pretty much have to be some sort of FTL travel if the show were to be interstellar. The nature of it I couldn't say. But I'd strive to keep it consistent. AI? Sure, why not? But like aliens, their thoughts and motives would be mysterious. They are capable of being great allies, and are capable of great harm as well. I'd shoot for timeless themes. And I'd try to keep it overall optimistic. Yeah there's powerful, potentially hostile factions out there. Space is dangerous, with lots of mysteries to potentially get you killed. And the stuff out there can make the problems on Earth seem petty. But they can be overcome, and we'll be the stronger for it.

Exactly. GoT worked as a mainstream fantasy because it was a very low magic world. Mostly it was a political drama with 5 mins of dragons every season, the fantasy side of it took a back sit to scheming and back stabbing. 'Magic' was there but we aren't talking finger wigglers and sparkles which a mainstream audience could find too nerdy or childlike for a show that was very adult in all other ways. I think sci fi success with a mainstream audience would have to mimic the same balance. SO light on the stupid looking aliens, pew pew space battles and nerdy elements and heavy on the adult themes and stories. So COP SHOW in space vs SPACE SHOW with cops.

There really are a lot of great sci fi book series that could be made into good series.
I'd love to see Ring world made into a series

How would you make a space sci fi TV show that could appeal to mainstream audiences? Change it to science fantasy

I'd like to see the Ender's Game sequel Speaker for the Dead made into a limited series.
A murder mystery..IN SPACE! With alien thought process and motivations being a major aspect of explaining what happened.

Lem is basically impossible to put on screen. Pilot Pirx? Ye, the short stories maybe? But I never really bothered looking for a red plotline through all these. It'd be more like sketches.

Enough to make a season or two of short umconnected stories in a show similar to Mandalorian. Wait a minute. There already is a popular mainstream sci-fi show. The feaking Mandalorian! Thats it, question answered, close this thread.
