Replaying DA2 again, I think the game holds up pretty well, but the boss fights.... not so much. The ARW, in particular, strikes me as a distillation of everything I don't like in CRPG combat -- kiting, micromanagement, strafing, timing moves against animations, and so on.
How do the rest of you feel?

At the time I first played DA2 I had more experience with the more action style of combat than with the more classic rpg style that Origins was trying to emulate. So I didn't really mind it.

The Rock Wraith I can handle, but the profanes it summons can be a pain.

I came to DA2 many years ago as a "general" (J)RPG player. My only experience with anything more fluid than that was KOTOR (which did an excellent job of hiding the turnbased system of it), and whilst you COULD argue that the DA system is just an evolution (less turn-based, more real-time) of that used in KOTOR, I'd have to disagree, the core mechanics are fundamentally different. What I liked about the system: Tactics, my god, I spent so long on this screen writing convoluted setups for Anders, Merril, and Aveline (The rest were pretty straight-foreward) for all my friends, this is actually what got me into the game in the first place. A playable rogue-type that didn't suck, but also wasn't mandatory to get the "full" benefit of the game, a squadmember rogue can do most of the same things. Mage-tanks being a thing. Mages aren't all glass-cannons, some stand in the middle of the maelstrom, controlling the chaos around them. A conversation system that lets me snark, sarcasm, and joke my way through EVERYTHING. What I didn't like: I tended to find the bosses tedious, and often emphasising parts of the mechanics I didn't like. In my mind, a boss fight should be about A) Knowing your enemy, Knowing you party's roles, and C) How to use your strength against the enemy's weakness. Not "I died 5 times when it used this attack, at what time must I dodge or use a potion?" That one locked chest during the prologue. This irked me enough to be included in a discussion about combat. The reputation system. Whilst this may seem out of place, it often forced you to pre-plan your party (and thus, combat style/capabilities) if you didn't want to piss off the wrong partymember. I did not like feeling forced to leave my favourites behind. TL;DR Tactics good, bosses suck.

I thought this would be a discussion about how the rock wraith fits into the lore, not about the mechanics of the fight. Color me disappointed.

I was thinking that, as of now, it doesn't fit smoothly into the lore from my understanding of it, but doesn't smack of "they lost their train of thought" either.

I feel good about the ancient rock wraith. It has a very good spot lamp in its head. It can be useful.

The first time I fought it my game crashed to desktop just when I was dealing the final blow. From that moment I have always hated it.

I'm surprised you didn't mention this gem: But, yeah - I'm not quite sure what an honest role-play reaction to that would be - hide and observe it long enough to plan some strategy? For the player to have to learn how to defeat it by repetition defeats role-play.

But Aveline? I thought her tactics were the most straightforward, at least the way I built her. She had mostly sustained and passive abilities if you built her like a tank, no?

First time I ever did the fight I really hated it. Seemed very gimmicky and convoluted, not to mention stressful. It was basically an MMO boss battle shoehorned into a single player game. Took me about a million years to down the damned thing because basically I was still learning the game and my party build absolutely sucked with Mages running out of mana reduced to staff attacks, and a stupid glass canon Rogue with no cunning, who died again and again and again. I won mainly through pure attrition and bloody mindedness.
Nowadays I find it to be a pretty easy, but also pretty tedious and repetitive. The main danger is boredom.
