Bah, it seems a speed bump has come up already that may delay my campaign for a while.
Well in the meantime, does anyone have any cool stories about their tabletop experiences?

My campaign is still going pretty strong, though numerous players have come and gone since it started. But you sort of expect that with a resource like Roll20, when it is so easy to find so many potential games, it becomes relatively easy to lose players if they for whatever reason are not enjoying themselves.

Yeah that sort of loyalty doesn't really work in the scenario where you aren't all meeting in person once a month or whatever for a game, stuff done across the internet is impersonal to say the absolute least.

Okay, game appears t be happening though in a slightly modified form.
Game will be happening but via Fantasy Grounds, which will make this an even more novel experience for me.
Does anyone have any experience running games this way?

First session seemed to be a success. Still have to get used to the technology involved in running an online game. But everyone seemed to have fun. The final party selection ended up being a mountain dwarf fighter, a dragonborn sorcerer, a half elf rogue and a half elf cleric. Running the Lost Mine of Phandelver intro module so everyone can get used to the mechanics. Used the standard story hook of the party meeting Gundren Rockseeker in Neverwinter and being hired to bring a cart of supplies to Phandelver. The ambush on the road didn't go as smoothly as I'd hoped, since one of the goblins rolled a natural 1 on a Stealth check (and I failed to note that the battle mat I used was called "goblin ambush" Still managed to drop the rogue in that fight though, and the others had to scramble to rescue him I'm actually impressed that my group is not in fact a bunch of murder hobos. As they cleared the hideout, twice they managed to intimidate lone survivors of a fight into surrendering. The second time bit them in the *ss when said goblin managed to run off and warn the boss. They were not so forgiving the second time they caught him... If all goes well, they'll be back in town next week. This should be interesting. The sorcerer is a sage with an interest in history and the rogue is a con artist and forger. It may end up being a race to see how much information they uncover before getting run out of town

Found that concept very interesting when I first encountered it. The idea that you have to be the "Face" as a Sorcerer is annoying. We'll have to see how things go when the group gets to town. The cleric and rogue both have decent charisma, and the rogue taking the charlatan background means he's trained in the "talky" skills.

Well, the goblin demands were to kill their bugbear boss. Which the party had already done anyway (though these goblins didn't know it yet. So the rogue went back to collect said bugbears head while the others stayed to stabilize the party cleric who had gone down in the fighting. In addition to cutting off the bugbear's head, he also took the heads of all the goblin minions as well, just to make a point how they weren't to be trifled with. Goblins, however, aren't too bright. So they tried to shake the party down for whatever money they had on them as well. THIS, for some reason was GOING TOO FAR! Hilarity ensued They did save the hostage, however. The fighter made a rather cinematic charge (taking an opportunity attack from one of the other goblins) and managed to grab the hostage before the goblin boss could throw him off a ledge to near-certain death.

This week my players have a good chance at encountering a nothic: an insane telepathic monster that was once a wizard before being corrupted by its power. It has since struck a bargain with the local bad guy, but is not above betraying him for the right price.
I'm thinking of playing it rather Gollum-like, but speaking directly into their minds (I don't think it can even speak Common anyway), and trying to screw with them with any info it can dig up there.

Ya, its the usual result of when someone tries to become a Lich and the usual result happens and it fails utterly. ._. That's why Liches are scary, they actually survived the process of becoming undead, retaining their minds, sense of self and their ambition. So unlike the poor poor Nothic, the Lich retains their power, and it can only grow stronger from there.

Must be kind of a letdown to aspire to be an apex level undead with phenomenal cosmic powers and all the time in the world to amass more. The end-boss of a high level campaign... ...only to become a CR 2 miniboss in an early chapter of a low level module

Sure, for you it gives you a place to actually put down the roots of the introduction of the "Superior" or "Dragon". For example you find the Nothic within the ruins of this long abandoned stronghold, and amid the wreckage and rot, you find journals and notes, indicating that whomever the Nothic was prior to their transformation, they were just some apprentice, or second tier Magi(which is a great introduction for a potential call back at higher levels). Because if the Nothic was once a 9th tier caster himself, then who taught him what he tried here? He gave him that level of instruction? How was this Magi not some country known or world famous spellcaster? Because they started out as just some trivial servant to a greater power, and throughout the decades of their service they amassed more until they were ready to take their own place within the collective. This is how I have introduced more then one "Black School" into past campaigns.

Okay, they DID meet the nothic, and he and the rogue ended up being BFFs.
The party found a secret passage that let them bypass about half the dungeon (seriously, they picked up a clue that there was a hidden door that I totally did NOT notice!
I played up how cool the cavern was, the smell of decay, and the voice in their head asking them questions. I had them half-convinced they were about to be jumped by undead, when I had the nothic ask the rogue if he had any food (the nothic's boss, I decided, was kinda neglectful of the nothic, only feeding it intermittently, so it could potentially be convinced to betray him) The rogue too some rations and tossed it out in front of him. He saw a clawed, three-fingered arm reach up from a crevasse, snatch the jerky, and pull it back.
Then the nothic asked for something "fresher" Then the light bulb went off in the rogue's head. He went back to the previous room, where the party had just killed four ruffians (then posed them in the bunks in the barracks to look like they were sleeping. They're weird like that). He dragged one of the ruffian bodies over and dumped it in front of the crevasse. The nothic was delighted with such a fresh kill and immediately tore into it while answering questions telepathically. He was able to tell them what kind of creatures were in the dungeon, where, in general terms, the boss was, and that there were prisoners in the dungeon. He failed to tell them that the bridge they were going to use to cross the crevasse was rigged to collapse, but after that trove of info they weren't even mad. Heck, the rogue is certain the nothic has loot (he's right) but couldn't bring himself to attack.
Afterwards the party cleric befriended a mistreated goblin servant. The little guy is totally ingratiating himself to the party. THoguh outside of knowing the layout of this specific dungeon, he's going to be pretty much useless to them.
Now the party has captured the bad guy (alive) and is backtracking to rescue the prisoners (with bad guy in tow) I wonder what kind of surprises I can spring on them, given how much they now know?
