Just in on Twitter right now. He's having his final day at Beamdog after, apparently, floundering as creative director for 2 years. I was wondering why news were getting stale so I suppose they just aren't ready for anything except ports and remasters.
Here's hoping he's yet another BioWare oldie that returns home.

Well, that's rather unfortunate for him. I assume he went there expecting more creativity from this studio. Hope he finds what hes looking for.

At 46 years of age he might just be looking for a place where he can tell the stories he wants to tell? This is just an unfounded hypothesis.

At 46 years of age he might just be looking for a place where he can tell the stories he wants to tell? This is just an unfounded hypothesis. I won't put words in his mouth or his thoughts, but considering he's leaving and he was basically a top-member of the team it seems to me like it wasn't going fast enough for him and it certainly has been a while since any news of original creations has been talked about by Beamdog. Also, he complained occasionally on Twitter over his teammates either working from home out of "sickness" or not being professional about the review-process of their various creative tasks. It gave me the impression that Gaider is far more organized than the rest of Beamdog and in that light, I can guess maybe he left because he wanted something more up to his skill. Beamdog probably also didn't pay super well.

Huh, that's kind of sad. Hope Mr. G. can find somewhere where he can what he does best.
I've watched a few of the Beamdog live streams and the two that do it don't exactly come across as being overly professional about it.

I saw back when Chris Avellone guested as well and that Trent Oster guy seemed very err... grumpy and nonchalant about it all.

When he retired from DA, I thought rather than video games, he might be going into writing novels freelance, since he did a fair amount of supplemental material to DA, and Inquisition itself was pretty text heavy. I was pretty surprised when he turned up at another video game studio after all. Now I'm wondering again if that'll be his next move this time.

Huh. I haven't heard word one about anything Beamdog has done. So far they've just made "Enhanced Editions" of old Infinity Engine games: Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment. They are currently working on Neverwinter Nights, but no release date has been revealed yet. I for one think it's awesome that they are updating these games for modern systems without needing a laundry list of mods to run. And I'm kinda sad that whatever Gaider was working on doesn't seem out be working out. I always respected him, even if I didn't always agree with his story choices. Hope he lands on his feet.

There's a likely chance he's moved away from the company while knowing what's next already. We'll see. He could be looking for a hiatus as well or maybe Mike Laidlaw wants to start something with him.

To be honest I have never been a huge fan of Gaider's writing or the Dragon Age series in general, most of his characters tend to fall into the same predictable archetypes and a lot of the "humour" in the Dragon Age series is the type of thing that would go down well on a LOLcats forum. Still with other Bioware veterans returning to the studio there is a chance he might as well, to be honest I don't know why he left or would have been cast out in the first place? Huh. I haven't heard word one about anything Beamdog has done. So far they've just made "Enhanced Editions" of old Infinity Engine games: Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment. So are they giving the game a graphical overhaul or they just doing minor tweaks like what they did in the infinity engine games with increasing the resolution and a few minor visual tweaks like colour coding the character selection circles and stuff? Technically there wasn't as much that needed upgrading visually in the infinity engine games as the 2D backgrounds already looked quite good, all there really was to do was increase the resolution and not much really, with Neverwinter Nights however it was made with an early model of 3D graphics and graphically hasn't aged too well, if they really want to remaster the game then they really need to do a graphical overhaul otherwise there isnt really much point.

I haven't gotten around to playing it yet but I think a lot of the hate came from Beamdog injecting a lot of SJW talking points into the game and attacks on Gamergate, while I can't say I agree with their politics I do feel when creating your own original content developers should be able to express themselves however they see fit (not sure how I feel about them using already established characters they did not create and piggybacking off a successful and beloved game in order to do so but I guess that is a bit more of a grey area), however one thing I do take issue was Gaider expressing the desire to re-write the Baldur's Gate series to eliminate some of the "sexist and misogynist" things within the series like Jaheira being the "nagging wife" even though it was clear she was the dominant one in that relationship.

Both. The game is getting a graphics overhaul as well as resolution boosts and such like we've seen before. In addition, they've said that modules and saves from the original game will be backwards-compatible with the Enhanced Edition. There's also a rather mysterious phrase in their announcement: Original developers have teamed with key members of the Neverwinter Nights community to curate important fan-requested improvements to support players, storytellers, and modders.

That's certainly part of it. The GamerGate comment was totally uncalled for and I'm glad they patched it out. But the rest of the stuff was buried deep enough that it didn't bother me much. Much of what ended up bothering me was twofold: 1) The rather OOC attitude of some of the returning characters and 2) the classic "Ninjamance" being back. At one point I checked my flags and found that I was in a romance with Safana, Neera, Glint AND Schael all at once! I think the only reason I wasn't in romances with Viconia and Dorn as well was because I wasn't running with an evil party!

Still with other Bioware veterans returning to the studio there is a chance he might as well, to be honest I don't know why he left or would have been cast out in the first place? Writers have different strengths and weaknesses. Gaider's characterizations are archetypal often to the point of feeling trite, and his sense of humor seems to start and end with "hurhurhurCHEEESE", but he's quite talented as a builder of worlds. Looking at the 3 DA games, with him in the lead chair, we saw series of games where the conflict always felt meaningful, even without a major antagonist to drive it at times (something I, personally, rarely find works), and when there was a major antagonist, they were effectively compelling even when they weren't always deep. There's a rich setting and an interplay of forces. Some of that's assuming that he had a hand in certain specific things, but that's where his strengths seem to lie. Of course, I'm not sure that gives him a place at BW at the moment to best play to that strength, even if he did come back to them.

Clearly the work he did on Baldur's Gate and DA:O was great, but I have only to be exposed to 12 seconds of Dorian to know I am simply not interested. It's just ....yeesh.

That's certainly part of it. The GamerGate comment was totally uncalled for and I'm glad they patched it out. But the rest of the stuff was buried deep enough that it didn't bother me much. The point is, they certainly made a statement with that, and many people didn't like said statement - hence backlash. I mean, that's what PR is all about, isn't it? You can remain politically neutral and sell your game to everyone, OR you can decide to make some snooty comments that will piss off a bunch of people, and then potentially suffer the consequences. Eh, I don't care about them either way. Oh, I certainly don't disagree. Which is why I'm glad they responded to the backlash and removed it. But I suppose being exposed to game producers that REALLY wear their politics on their sleeves, like Bioware, has desensitized me. I mean, compared to MEA, looking at Siege of Dragonspear was comparatively mild.

I don't care, they got some awful writing for that expansion in general because so many writers who have zero investment in storytelling but instead message-fiction about modern political sway are joining the industry over all the dumb political correctness obsessions in the west. Anyway that stuff was made before Gaider had left BioWare and the writers behind siege of dragonspear left anyway. Beamdog is different today.

I've always pondered: what is the point to hire a great writer like DG when all they are going to do are just overhauls of older games where they are not even barely touching the story? (especially after what happened the only time they tried)
