How do you choose your 'canon' or favorite world state across all three games? Assuming, of course, that you have one. Do you pick your class based purely on what you enjoy playing? Do you choose your romance based on how much you like the character, or how plot-relevant their romance seems to be? Do you like all your protagonists to be the same race/gender/class/sexuality, or do you like to switch it up and have every hero be very different? What kind of character do you suspect you'll want to play in DA4?

While I like the concept and idea of all of the saviors of Thedas being women, I've abandoned my female characters since I've realized I enjoy playing men more.
My canon choices are just based around what I like, nothing more than that.
For DAO, I moved from mage to warrior because my DAI warrior experience made me more attracted to that class, but I've always like SnS in DAO.
DA2 is dagger rogue because it is so damn FUN in that game.
For DAI, my first play was a female mage. When I made a male to romance Dorian, the warrior choice was primarily aesthetic at first. I like the way DAI mage plays, but think the human male model looks too bulky as a mage; nothing wrong with a beefier mage, but it's not my ideal (similarly, male mage Hawke is too bulky for me). I dislike DAI rogue, so warrior was the choice for me, which turned out to be wonderful because I love my canon Inquisitor and being a SnS warrior is part of who he is.

I don't have just one world state as canon, because I can't decide between all my protags. With DA Keep, I have three main worldstates and endless permutations of them that are less 'canon'.
Yep! I love playing mages and sometimes ranged rogues, so that's what I tend to select first. The fact that mages have such an interesting and unique role in DA is icing on the cake.
The former. If I like them/want to romance them enough, it doesn't matter if their romance is plot-relevant. On the other hand, if I don't like the character, I don't give a shit how plot-relevant their romance is. (Aka, Solas.)
My protags are all women, but other than that I'll switch it up because why not? If I've played out the game enough, I'll even get to the race/class combos that are less interesting to me, for variety.
A mage in that setting would have a very different experience from what we've seen in the south. So I would have to make my first character a mage, no question. I hope there's a chance to play an altus, laetan or liberati. I also have a keen interest in playing a qunari again.

My canon world state is the one that I play first, because it's the least contaminated by metagaming . I spend all the rest of my runs making different choices on purpose so I can see ALL THE CONTENT but I like to go into a new game with the decisions I made when I didn't know what every choice would lead to. That said, before a new game comes out, I replay my first character so I can do the side content I inevitably missed, and sometimes I change a few things then, but all major plot choices remain the same. I choose class and romance based on what I think will be the the most fun (for certain definitions of 'fun') although I am not always good at guessing. My first character in any new cPRG is always a woman, but I like the other stuff to vary - so far I've played a human archer, a warrior Hawke and a dual-wielding dwarf. First two were straight and the third was bi. Haven't played a lesbian in this world state yet, but I am not ruling it out if one of the female romance options in DA4 looks fun enough to lure me away from the hot dudes. Or if there are no hot dudes. If the option is available, I really want to play a qunari in DA4, because I think it's time this world state had a mage hero and I am not enthusiastic about playing a human or elf to achieve that. (In hindsight, my first Hawke should have been a mage. But in hindsight, my first Warden should have been a dwarf, so what are you going to do?) And if Harding is a romance option, she will be on that like Oghren on beer.

For me, it's a mix of choices I like, choices that make the story flow naturally, choices that work retroactively, and filling in the details based on the framework that provides. The example I always seem to use in these sorts of topics is originally playing and really loving a City Elf Warden as my main Warden in Origins, but that character only felt right to me in a romance with Leliana. Well, DAI came around, and I couldn't really come up with a good justification for how that relationship makes sense in regards to the ongoing story between the games, so she got benched, so to speak.
Then in coming up with a character who could be canon for Origins, I knew I wanted a Rogue, I knew I wanted a character who had a good excuse to exhaust all dialogue options because I'm an extreme completionist, and I knew I wanted an Alistair romance so that I could both have a character with a romance interest but who also would break things off as part of the story, which meant recruiting Loghain. Putting these together, I came up with the idea that a Dalish who was fully dedicated to the Wardens' mission of stopping the Blight would fulfill all those things, but a softhearted one, because I'm okay roleplaying evil, and I'm okay roleplaying ruthless, even but I don't particularly like roleplaying an ass.
I did similar things with my Hawke and my Inquisitor.
I also, though, have this weird sort of "forced randomization" when I think about putting all my heroes together. I don't want them to all be the same race, or all the same class. However, I don't want one of each, either. So when creating Hawke and Inquisitor, I knew that for my "ongoing canon", I wanted one male and one female, but wasn't particular which was which. Similarly, since my Warden was an Elf and Hawke was human, I strongly wanted my Inquisitor to be one of those two (and I'm somewhat partial to humans because they're the most populous in Thedas, so it seems like 'most' heroes should be human by law of averages). If I play, say, a Dwarf Inquisitor later, and decide I want to make that "canon", I'll have to change my Warden. Likewise with class.
DA4, somewhat ironically, could potentially throw that whole balance off, too. After all, since I'll have to repeat a class, presumably at that point, then there wouldn't be anything stopping me from making a Rogue, Warrior, and Mage for Warden, Hawke, and Quizzie respectively (and potentially, the same for race). That all said, all other things being equal, I kind of want to play an Elven Mage in DA4, if the story ends up being very Fen'Harel-y, because smiting the bastard with an Elven Mage just feels like JUSTICE. And if that is how things play out, then it wouldn't really retroactively make a different for my previous canon choices, although the outcomes of other choices might.

Canon: Female Cousland/King Alistair, Male Snarky Mage Hawke/Isabela, Male Lavellan/Cassandra Happy World: Female Amell/Warden Alistair, Male Aggressive Warrior Hawke/Anders (killed Anders), Female Mage Trevelyan/Cullen Yep. I love to play as Mages. Not about to change that. On how much I like the character. I loved all of my canon romances, although the King Alistair choice was plot relevant as well as a general sense of love Well, all my people are straight, although I did switch it up with my manly Male Mage Hawke though. I love me some snarky male Hawke. My Hero's are overall, very different from one another though (even though two of them are human, lol) so I guess I do make them different, even if they share the same sexuality. It depends. I wouldn't play it until I see gameplay and other spoilers. So I know beforehand what I should choice. Though presumably a mage of sorts, again, as we'll be in Tevinter. Choice the romances I like best, and ones that suit well with the given universe, although my choices do come in hand when it comes to it too.

I've always liked playing as a mage. I've never been a close-quarter combat person in any games I've ever played, so playing a warrior just doesn't feel like it's my "thing". I generally pick romances based on the LI's beliefs, opinions of the world around them, or their own personality (usually). So aside from DAO, my canon Hawke and Inquisitor are both mages. I picked a Cousland rogue because I really like the origin story of the human noble path, and picked the rogue because it's a ranged class. Although, when it comes to romance, I paired my Trevelyan up with Cassandra because Cass is the sort of person that appear to be stoic and traditional on the outside, but privately is open to other opinions and huge romantic (although she'd never admit it ). And she just seem to fit my Inquisitor's personality (played as a somewhat devout person yet know some Chantry teachings are wrong or misleading). When I had to pick a Divine in DAI, I initially got Cassandra as Divine on my 1st playthrough going in blind. But then I saw that if Cass is Divine, she'll break up with my Inquisitor...and that was a big no-no. I don't like breaking up my married couples. So 2nd playthrough, I did everything to make Leliana the Divine (were greatly relieved to see that Leliana didn't break up with her Warden). Although, I did like Leliana's policies and reformist approach a lot more than Cass's traditionalist with limited reforms style.

Then I kept seeing that term on the forum and just decided "My first PT is my canon!" but after playing through Inquisition many times, I'm not sure anymore. I kinda feel like I should switch my canon from my first, to my favorite World State. Pro Mage/Pro Elves World State (first (imported) World State) Mage Lovers World State (favorite World State)

How do you choose your 'canon' or favorite world state across all three games? In my head, they all exist simultaneously (and in my fanfiction). In more limited zones, I've settled on 4 canon world states that I would carry, one by one, through DA4 and beyond, if necessary. If I had to choose one, it would be very difficult. My Tabris with Warden Alistair was amazing and was my first. My Surana with Zevran was equally emotional. I had an extemely high amount of fun with my Cousland and King Alistair. I could let my brosca, my mahariel, and my amell behind easily enough. Except I really like the idea of Morrigan with a NON old god baby. Do you pick your class based purely on what you enjoy playing? uh... sort of. Rogue is my default. City elf my preference. So went rogue Tabris, then Rogue Hawke, and then... ah yes. I googled what would give me the best story for DAI for my first play through. literally everyone was screaming female mage dalish. Except at the time, I was pretty "eh" about the Dalish, so I met in the middle with a female human mage. But I hate DAI mages so much. I love their rogue, second only to DA2 rogue. I have exactly 2 warrior characters, a Hawke for Isabella, and a Templar for Dorian. I hate the warrior mechanics so much for Hawke that I let AI play it and play Isabella instead. So... mostly yes? on a first PT, I cater to narratively interesting on repeats. Do you choose your romance based on how much you like the character, or how plot-relevant their romance seems to be? How much I like the Character. Although every game with romance, I pretty much flirt with everyone to a point. Alistair was only coincidentally plot relevant AND adorable. Anders tricked me. and now I'm Fenris all the way. Cullen is not very plot relevant, not like King Alistiar, Prince Sebastion and Anders the Terroist, and Morrigan future inheritor of flemyth's soul. Oh yeah, and murder pope. Somehow in spite of her plot relevance (or, at least, involvement in all three games) she doesn't register as that relavant to me. I actually played Origins never knowing of her existence the first time I played. She's DLC content in 2 so yeah. not that relevant hehe Do you like all your protagonists to be the same race/gender/class/sexuality, or do you like to switch it up and have every hero be very different? I was trying to recall how I did manage to organize my four canon world states. It's not based on any of the things you listed. I organized them narratively. Random selection of factors: Only Isabella's Hawke is allowed to die in the Fade. <- which means that Warden Alistair can finally have his Cameo in DAI. I want the Warden who romanced Lel to be in the world state where Lel is Divine. I want my Surana/Zevran world state to also have a DAI Cullen/Elven mage Inquisitor. Because I liked thinking about him talking about... the last beautiful world saving elf he'd fallen for with the current one. So once I got all those desires out of the way, I plugged in the rest of my favorites that didn't have such high standards and I had my four canon world states. What kind of character do you suspect you'll want to play in DA4? A elven slave who's never left the city (definitely NOT DALISH) who leads a rebellion against the Tevinter Imperium successfully. S/he will then lead the new government against the Qunari and win, before somehow having to resolve Solas in some fashion with their newly met friend, the Inquisitor.

Canon's usually oriented around plot relevance and pathos for me. I like that if I zoom out it feels like my characters are all contributing to a broader, overarching narrative and having a background that seems more tightly woven or making decisions that leave ripples helps with that. And pathos because I like angst.
EDIT:
Oh yeah, for DA4 I'm predisposed to a rise to power kind of situation. Which means almost definitely a mage and from the most marginalized position possible. I'm not interested in playing a bleeding heart, if they're a slave they'll have an attitude of "I got mine" there's always the possibility of evolution on that front though. Ambitious, vindictive, wants recognition. A "Bow down bitches" kind of character.

I meta-game the hell out of the series to get the happiest endings possible.
Or i used to anyway.
Now I just try to tell myself the story I enjoy the most. A lot of my choices are based on who is an available romance option. Morrigan and Leliana dont do much for me, so Warden Indwen is a female elf who romances Alister. I adore Merrill, so Ebon Hawke is a bloodmage (head-canon is that she taught him).
I can't really decide for Inquisition. None of the options really spoke to me in that game.

I don't choose the canon, the canon choose me. My first playthrough always ends up canon, it just gets refined with less fail. I have trouble playing anything else, I still have just one Inquisitor.

I don't have "canon" but my main choices are similar. Perhaps the best is until this time: Aedan Cousland/Wilhelm Hawke/Issaar AdaarAedan Cousland (dual wield Reaver/Champion/Templar warrior) romance: Zevran, still together as lovers, while Aedan married Anora for the throne, killed Connor accidentally, supported the Mages, cured the Werewolves, destroyed the Anvil, performed the Dark Ritual, killed the Architect. Wilhelm Hawke (sarcastic Elemental/Blood specced mage) romance: Fenris (rivalry), Carver became a Templar – rivalry, duelled Arishok for Isabela, fully supported Anders and the freedom, reunited with Fenris in Weisshaupt. Issaar Adaar (Knight Enchanter specced mage) romanced: The Iron Bull, stayed together, allied with the mages, Celene rules alone, inspired Leliana is the Divine. Not perfect, because, for example, I would prefer the Public Truce – maybe once I have enough patience for it (I hate this quest more and more), and there something I would do better, but fair enough. There are some promising started games to fix the minor mistakes. So: my "canon" is the world that is closest to the perfection in my viewpoint.

Originally my canon world state (which was my first playthrough on DAI) was going to be Warden as male elf mage romancing Leliana, male dual wielding Hawke romancing Fenris and female mage Lavellan romancing Solas. Due to my dissatisfaction with the way the latter romance turned out (even before Trespasser) and the outcome of the various choices made by her, that Inquisitor and her world state has now dropped to 1st reserve.
Now my canon state has my female city elf Warden dual wielding rogue romancing Zevran, female mage Hawke romancing Fenris and male hunter Lavellan (archer) romancing Dorian.
I like to keep a bit of variety between characters from one story to the next. So I would never use all three of my mage characters together or all three of my gay characters because it does seem a rather unlikely coincidence for them to be the heroes in each story.
As against that aversion to repeating myself, I have to admit that I do favour elf protagonists. DA2 being restricted to playing a human saved me from having a run of elves. If I have the option in DA4 then I will want to play an elf again. I'm not sure about the class until I know how we are to be introduced to the story. I would very much like to be a rebel against the system so am unlikely to be a mage if it is set in Tevinter because of how a mage automatically is a step up on a non-mage (although Calpernia's story did highlight that mages can still be slaves so I'd probably be happy to go with mage if we start off as a slave).
If they have cured the clunky way in which the class performs in Frostbite, I'd really like to go back to playing a dual wielding rogue as I had a lot of fun with that in the games prior to DAI. Alternatively, depending on the specialisms offered, I might actually go with a warrior elf who hero worships Shartan and has based himself on him. We ought to get at least one new specialism for the Warrior class in the next game as Templars don't even exist up in Tevinter. I'm rather hopeful they may reintroduce the Spirit Warrior as I would like to try playing an updated version of that.

I don't have a canon world state per se, but at the moment, I have the following uploaded into the keep:
- casteless female dwarf rogue Lia, romanced Zevran, they are still together and she is practical, but not cruel. She tries to help if she can. - Sarcastic Alighiera Hawke, dw rogue, romanced Isabella and sided with the mages (because: sister). She can make hard decisions, if necessary. She didn't help Tallis, because she was a bit sick of QUnari plots after the Arishok incident, she didn't execute Anders, but didn't help him to finish his quest in act 3 and sent him away. And she refused to give Merrill the arulin'holm, because she thought, what Merrill tried to do was stupid and dangerous. - Riya Lavellan, mage, romanced Iron Bull (Chargers saved of course)
I normally play the classes, I like most (generally rogues or mages, never warriors) and choose the romances from the pool of characters, I like. I did it different two times, with Alistair, which was the most boring playthrough, I had so far in DAO, and with Solas and I didn't finish that playthrough. About choices: I'm deciding beforehand, what kind of character I will play and make the decisions accordingly. For example: Ali Hawke is a mage supporter, but she is also very paranoid, so letting Anders build something, that sound suspiciously like a bomb and letting Merrill experiment with a darkspawn infested mirror are not likely choices, she would support. She likes both though, so she would never kill Anders or letr any harm come to Merrill.

First of all; I only pick humans as canon which makes it easier.
Warden has got to be a warrior to wear Warden-Commander armor and for it to make sense. I generally shift between Morrigan and Leliana but pick Leliana most of the time because I like Morrigan when she is on her own with Keiran.
Hawke is a mage, there is no argument here and a female because FemHawke-Isabela ship is my favourite.
This leaves Inquisitor to be a rogue and conveniently archer rogue is the most fun to play in DAI. To be fair none of the female romance options has clicked for me in Inquisition so I went with Cassandra because it's more plot related.

Wow, thank you for all the great contributions to this thread. 😍 I'd quote people individually but that'd be an enooooormous wall of text so suffice to say I think your reasons are fascinating and they've given me a lot to think about. For me, choosing my canon is a mix between just doing what I like (my favorite class, my favorite romance, etc.) and wanting what I feel is a cohesive world state (so... the protagonists are different enough from each other that they feel "different" to me but all three stories are kind of harmonious and feel like they could exist in the same world? It's weird and doesn't make much sense, but there you go!) I like my protagonists to be different in the sense that they have wildly different backgrounds, family histories, etc. Given the opportunity I prefer to play dwarves and qunari. I have the hardest time in DAO because I prefer the Warden to be a dwarf, Zevran is by far my favorite romance from a feels perspective, then Morrigan, but I like Leliana's romance from a narrative perspective (esp. if she becomes Divine, which she always does in my playthroughs). SO CONFLICTED. I also generally prefer same-sex relationships for my protags so it's like...... no DAO playthrough feels 100% perfect to me because these things don't necessarily line up LOL. DA2 is easier but I'm still a little conflicted. One thing is certain, Hawke is always a mage and I prefer the default appearances/names for both female Hawke and male Hawke. I am so torn between my Garrett x Fenris playthrough (Warden Carver, executed Anders) and my Marian x Isabela playthrough (Templar Carver, spared Anders)! They're both sooo good! For DAI, love Sera's romance best from a narrative perspective AND a feels perspective. I was initially torn between a qunari or dwarf protag, but settled on qunari for lots of reasons. I love the war table missions with the Valo-Kas, being Vashoth puts an interesting spin on her friendships with Bull and Dorian, I enjoy many of the NPC reactions to a qunari PC and I love Varric's gift in Trespasser (Shokrakar working for Aveline and driving her up the wall gives me life). And ofc, Sera's qunari thirst. I do struggle with the mages vs. templars decision in this game, though, and whether to play as a mage or warrior. For DA4..... for all we know, the protagonist could be human-only and we won't be able to play as a morally grey character, eh.... my first thought is that, given the choice, I'd like to play another "outsider", a female dwarf or qunari. Someone who is quite unlike my Brosca/Aeducan or Adaar. I generally lean toward f/f relationships but it all depends on who's available and where the story goes, so who knows?

My canon worldstate (using DA2 colors for basic personality): DAO - F!Tabris, DW Rogue, Zevran romance, probably red with purple tendencies DA2 - F!Hawke, DW Rogue, Fenris romance, mostly purple and dabbles in the other two DAI - F!Lavellan, mage, Cullen romance, mostly blue How do you choose your 'canon' or favorite world state across all three games? For my canon worldstate, it was the three that just most felt "right". In the case of DAO, it was my second playthrough. (I will admit though, that my first playthough - warrior Queen Cousland - I do like to think of as a "co-Warden" in that Duncan arrived at Ostagar with two recruits instead of one. F!Tabris would still be the main though.) For DA2 and DAI, both happened to be my first full playthrough for each. Decisions and such might get tweaked a tiny bit, especially now that I'm revisiting them all on the PC. Any changes are more a result of diving further in the characters' heads since I originally played them on the PS3 than for metagame reasons. A couple of the major decisions that I know I want to still carry over into the next games, such as Ferelden's monarch and the Divine, are still set in stone and won't change. Do you pick your class based purely on what you enjoy playing? What I enjoy playing. I'm most comfortable playing rogue/thief type characters in these type of games, so that's what I tend to end up playing as with my first character in each. Inquisition was an outlier for me. I started with a DW rogue, and for once it just didn't feel right. Switched to a mage and it just "clicked". Do you choose your romance based on how much you like the character, or how plot-relevant their romance seems to be? How much I like the character. Zevran is arguably the least plot-relevant of the Origins romances, but he is by far my favorite. Same with Fenris. Inquisition I was initially torn on Cullen and Dorian, so I actually very happy with Dorian's "reveal". He ended up my canon Inquisitor's BFF, and my next Inquisitor I made a male so I could romance him on that playthrough. Sometimes it's even who the character decides she/he likes the most instead of who I like even. My F!Mage Adaar was supposed to romance Sera... she apparently had other ideas and ended up starting with Blackwall and ending up with Josephine after his reveal (Sera ended up being her BFF and partner-in-crime). That was the same character that was planned to be sarcastic from the start, but actually started out a bit serious at the beginning and "lighting up" / getting more sarcastic as the game went one - I think it was Sera's increasing influence. Love when they get a mind of their own and go completely off script Do you like all your protagonists to be the same race/gender/class/sexuality, or do you like to switch it up and have every hero be very different? - My canons are all straight female, probably because I myself am a straight female. Even if it's not a conscious attempt, there's probably a bit of self-insertion in the canon playthroughs (at least mine). I do have some male and homosexual/bisexual characters on subsequent playthroughs for each game. - Two of my three canons are elves, but I don't know how much of it was choosing the race and how much was choosing the backstory in general. - Class covered above - but tend to be rogue, however for Inquisition the mage just felt more right/natural to play. - Personality-wise, each one had a different personality from the other two. Didn't particularly plan on making them all different, it's just how the characters developed. What kind of character do you suspect you'll want to play in DA4? Honestly, can't answer this until I see what the choices are. Elf could be interesting with the implied Fen'Harel storyline, but human mage could also be interesting with the suspected Tevinter setting...

Warden has got to be a warrior to wear Warden-Commander armor and for it to make sense. That was one thing that always annoyed me - I love playing a rogue, but there was no way I was going to stick a rogue in massive armor. I did find two pieces of modded armor that I like to use for my rogue Warden Commander and mage Warden Commander. They look a little "fancier" than the rank-and-file Warden outfits, but are still class friendly. Rogue: "Armor of the Grey", found at Nexus mods - RLs Fashion Bazaar Mage: "Robes of the Weisshaupt Warden", found at Nexus mods - Warden's Trading Post Redux

How do you choose your 'canon' or favorite world state across all three games? I've been using the same world state since January 2015. I used a couple others, before that, so that I could leave Alistair in the fade and leave male Hawke in the fade while Loghain survived. excellent. I enjoy mage the most. So, yes. Depends. Over half of my DAI playthroughs, I never romanced anyone. If I was to choose one, it would be Josephine. Why? The duel. I like dueling with Lord what's-his-face. I've played a dwarf, qunari and human. My favorite is a female human voiced by AWR. So, no Someone like a sarcastic Hawke.

It really just depends how I see the narrative going. I like to have each protagonist's personality sort of respond to the last, especially since the way Bioware writes Dragon Age, they are usually cleaning up the mess of the last hero. So for example The Warden was sheltered but book smart (since she was a mage who grew up in the Circle). Hawke was snarky, street smart, and thrived in battle. Inquisitor was serious, diplomatic, and didn't like war. And so far they have been alternating genders, female, male, female, then possibly male again for DA4. But they were all mages. That really wasn't on purpose, though. The Inquisitor was supposed to be non mage, but since I wanted to play an elf, I thought it made more sense if she was her clan's First, given her diplomatic skills and ease with humans. I pick romances based on narrative too, and who works best with the protagonist's personality.

Do you like all your protagonists to be the same race/gender/class/sexuality, or do you like to switch it up and have every hero be very different? What kind of character do you suspect you'll want to play in DA4? Up until last year, I only ever had a canon world state. After I ceased lurking, and began joining some of the conversations, a kernel of tempatation and inspiration infected my brain. Thus, I played a trilogy alternate last year with most of the outcomes altered, and lots of opposites in personalities, parties, etc. Otherwise, I sift through all the choices, and create my favorite combinations. Some of this gets tweaked during the actual experience, and then everything is fine-tuned into my own personal, printable game guides. I don't mind spoilers, since I still have fun in the journey, so I craft the story I want to experience. However, that doesn't always mean happy endings or outcomes. Finally, all of this gets filtered through my personal desire for variety (and let me tell you, that desire is strong. I have a list that counts genders, races, classes, equipment, sexual orientation, physical attributes, and personalities). Then, voila! Admittedly, I was afflicted with revisionism for awhile, but recently cured myself by creating a list of some brainstorming parameters. I even have a list of potential characters for further installments of the series, so I am officially hoping to play a male, qunari, support mage romancing either a dwarf or qunari. If no qunari are available, I will hope for a dwarven "Enchanter" class... EDIT: I missed the news and just found out that Pillars of Eternity 2 is coming to consoles, and will include romance! I am going to play a Templar or Herald dwarf there, so I can afford to put off my dwarf warrior for another potential qunari.
