My canon is: Warden Mahariel - Warrior - Romance Morrigan + had Old God baby with her - Recruited Loghain into Wardens - Made Alistair King with Anora - Annulled Circle of Magi and killed Wynne - Sided with the Dalish Elves, killed Werewolves - Desecrated the Urn of Sacred Ashes, and killed Leliana - Returned Sten's sword - Made Bhelen King, and kept Anvil of the Void. Also, sided with Branka. - Accepted Caladrius' offer - Actually stayed to defend Redcliffe, but had Isolde sacrifice herself in a blood magic ritual. Let Jowan free. - Killed Shale in Deep Roads when he sided with Branka. Hawke - Rogue - Sided with Meredith Stannard - Gave Isabela to the Arishok - Returned Fenris to Danarius. - Merril's clan is actually alive - Killed Feynriel in the Fade and made him Tranquil - Sided with Janeka - Betrayed Bethany multiple times - Red / Aggressive personality - Rival-manced Anders Everything about this hurts. 😂

He was angry and hated all shems at the beginning so he went on a bit of a killing spree as far as they were concerned. He kind of improved after he became a Warden, although he did let Avernus continue with his experiments, spared the Architect and burned Amaranthine. He had his own reasons. I am attached to that Warden, although I was rather new at the game at the time... also he looks uncannily like Justin Trudeau.

So... just like I did when DAI was announced, I've been revising my canon in preparation for DA4. What kind of story do I want to tell? Who'll be influential in that story, and what sort of broad themes do I want each world state to convey? 🤔 I put way too much thought into these things, but it's fun so I don't mind. I'm currently working off two "canon" world states if you can call them that.
WS1
DAO • Lazy-but-gifted Circle mage Warden romances Morrigan and has an Old God Baby with her. He embraces blood magic and chooses a lot of the more morally grey options in the series (like desecrating Andraste's ashes for power, sacrificing Isolde in a blood magic ritual, etc.) but also isn't a total douchebag, as he does come to Redcliffe's assistance in their time of need and he's not out there slaughtering the Dalish for the lulz. He spares Zevran and recruits Loghain into the Wardens. I haven't taken him through Awakening yet but he strikes me as the kind of guy who is pro-Avernus and pro-Architect. (Basically if there's dubious magic involved, he's all over that shit. He and his happy little maleficar family.) Has a healthy respect for Sten. Puts Bhelen on the throne of Orzammar and Anora on the throne of Ferelden. He takes the Blood Mage spec.
DA2 • Snarky mage Hawke takes a moderate stance on all this mage vs. Templar stuff, mostly wants to keep his head down and live a "normal" life and not get caught up in anyone's revolution. Falls for Fenris, Carver becomes a Grey Warden like their (in)famous HoF cousin, this dude loves Merrill and Anders but doesn't approve of blood magic or blowing up Chantries (and has a falling out with Anders over it). Thinks Sebastian is kind of a nob. Is besties with Varric and Isabela and Aveline. Survives the Fade at Adamant and settles down in his home-sweet-hell of Kirkwall. He takes the Force Mage spec.
DAI • Adaar thinks her being Inquisitor "sounds fake, but ok", never asked for an evil hand or a fancy title, thanks, but uses her newfound magical and political power to help people all the same. She's very much a woman of the people, values her soldiers' lives above the mission, romances and marries Sera. She's wary of Bull at first but manages to become good friends with him, Dorian, and Blackwall. Puts Celene on the throne with Briala as Ambassador. Reluctantly allies with the mages at Redcliffe, because their leadership may have made bad, desperate choices but having been raised by Tal-Vashoth parents, Adaar has a healthy admiration for wanting to be free. She takes the Rift Mage spec.
WS2
DAO • Cranky-but-earnest city elf cuts a guy's head off and becomes a Warden, escaping the life of domestic bliss and poverty her father had planned for her. Falls for Zevran, aka the assassin who fell in love with the mark. Has a bit of a contentious relationship with Alistair, Leliana, and Wynne because she finds them preachy and moralizing and just finds their lives too far removed from her own. Struggles to find common ground with most people. Is scared of the spooky swamp witch but becomes friends with her eventually. Hates Loghain with the fiery passion of a thousand burning suns but doesn't publically execute him because she's wary of the consequences - for the alienage, for herself, and she doesn't want to make Loghain a martyr. Is low-key Andrastian, would never defile the Sacred Ashes or side with the Architect. Puts Bhelen and Anora + Alistair on their respective thrones (hey, somebody got arranged-married after all!). Takes the Assassin spec and shoots people with arrows.
DA2 • Snarky mage Hawke (I am predictable) is more extreme than her male counterpart, isn't particularly appalled by Anders' actions and spares his life. She romances fellow freedom-lover Isabela, her brother joins the Templars, and she maintains friendships with most of her gang (except that sweet sweet rivalry with Aveline, which is all grudging respect and getting punched in the face). Survives Adamant to go sailing with Isabela once again. Ostensibly takes the Force Mage spec but let's be real, probably a blood mage.
DAI • The same as the other world state, only she disbands the Templars and puts Briala + puppet Gaspard on the Orlesian throne.

My (current) canon world state "I'm only human after all" (could also be called "magical girls unite" ) it's currently a work in progress, but I have already made the tapestry in the Keep for easy reference I generally tend to try to finish any and all side quests I come across, both for story sake and 'cause they tend to be fun (the more time I can spend in this game World the better) As to how I choose...I just go with the choices that I like and hope they turn out well over the course of the games
--
My Warden is Minerva 'Mina' Amell Human female mage (Shapeshifter+Keeper) Romance: none (Nathaniel in head canon) Minerva's key personality is mostly being nice to people who deserve it, but will throw shade and sarcasm whenever she can she has a weak spot for children as well as the common man and the underdogs (hence why she supported Bhelen due to his reforms for the Casteless) Will do whatever she can for the good of her country, even though she knows that as a mage she'll never truly be accepted.
Major choices
Recruited the Circle of Magi, rescued Connor from the demon (intimidated it into leaving) didn't defile the Sacred Ashes, saved Redcliffe from the undead made the Elves and werewolves get along by curing the werewolves Bhelen Aeducan rules Orzammar, the Anvil of the Void was destroyed Loghain was spared and made a Grey Warden Alistair and Anora rule Ferelden Dark ritual was performed by Loghain Both Amaranthine and Vigil's Keep were saved, spared the Architect Didn't complete Golems of Amgarrak (seeing as it apparently has no real impact on any of the other games whatsoever)
Morrigan was allowed to travel through the eluvian alone
Minor choices All companions recruited and did their companion quests
Spared Avernus and allowed him to do ethical research
Dagna left to study at the Circle 'killed' Flemeth ---
My Champion is Sinéad Hawke female mage (Spirit Healer) Romance: Fenris (friendship) Sinéad's main personality is diplomatic/helpful mixed with dashes of sarcastic and bluntness when the situation requires it She's mainly helpful to others, looking out for her friends and family (being very protective of them at times) Varric's nickname Waffles came as a surprise to her but turned out to be quite fitting (warm, soft and sweet)
She's supportive of the Templar's point of view, but would never actively support people like Meredith
Major choices Carver became a Grey Warden Fought the Arishok in single combat, didn't allow Isabela to be taken (also didn't support Petrice in her little crusade)
Sided with the Mages, Anders was not supported but he is still alive
Minor choices All companions recruited, their quests were completed Nathaniel Howe was saved from the Deep Roads, Zevran was found but not turned over to the Crows
Gamlen and Charade were reunited Feynriel was sent to the Circle in Act 1, but rescued by Hawke in Act 2 to which he escaped and left for Tevinter Aveline married Donnic, Varric did not keep the lyrium idol, Merrill's clan is still alive and her mirror was not broken --- My Inquisitor is Tylaera Lavellan
Elven female mage (Rift Mage) Romance: Cullen Tylaera is feisty and dislikes the fact people keep telling her she's the Herald of Andraste (she thinks it's a lot of hogwash thank you very much) Thinks becoming the Herald of Andraste is a joke made by the Maker, and firmly agrees that he would never send a mage to do his work ('cause why lock us up if we're so damn helpful eh?)
Major Choices firmly and harshly denies being the Herald Recruited and allied with the Mages Inquisition declared for Order Wardens were pardoned, Stroud was left in the Fade Celene and Briala rule Orlais (Florianne is also alive) The Inquisitor drank from the Well of Sorrows, the Sentinels were not angered
Leliana was made Divine Ameridan was found and the truth about him was revealed The Inquisition was disbanded and will attempt to redeem Solas
Minor choices All companions recruited, quests completed Iron Bull saved the Chargers, Cole was made more human (dubbing on this choice 'cause I also want Krem to be happy ) Inquisitor was a merciful judge Sutherland's company was successful Cullen was told not to take lyrium, Leliana was softened, Leliana's assassins took care of Josephine's problem with the du Paraquettes Samson's armor was destroyed (really wish I could have Calpernia as an enemy though, but I just can't do the Templar quest again 'cause of Envy ) Pretty sure I could type out my entire tapestry (which I have in a Word file) but eh *shrugs* this is what I can think of that I find important about my world state most of my world states tend to be the same anyway, with some minor choices in characters (races, genders, classes etc.) and some other choices (such as rulers and other things)
though one thing to note is that I tend to side with the Mages, always (if not always) have Alistair as King, and generally spare the Architect

In my case I just have the character in my head, with a LI in mind and then roleplay the best I can. I always roleplay with some self-insertion because I'm boring this way lol (sarcastic goodie brats? that's me). When I played DA2 first time I did a female lesbian Hawke that romanced Isabela to roleplay better but my thirst for gay rep has been going bigger over time so now I have a gay male run worldstate, I even have made a stupid character sheet with info about my characters XD and I would like to do another run for lesbian playable characters with my first Hawke as canon. Main problem? TIME fuck you real life I have a problem with this kind of game that I'm always playing the same characters over and over again trying to make a perfect playthrough but I guess that's impossible...

DA:O
City Elf female rogue (Syaries Tabris) who cured the werewolves, saved Redcliffe with all lives, let Isolde blood magic herself and saved Connor, sided with the mages, killed Caridin then convinced Branka to commit suicide. She held no hatred of shems, her mother taught her better than that.
DA2
Percival Hawke was a sarcastic Blood Mage who sided with the Templars until Meredith went utterly hatstand, so sided with mages in the finale, had a brother who joined the Gray Wardens. Romanced Merrill, but kept all companions alive except for Anders, who was put down like the dog he was.
DAI
Vitellus Cadash was a Dwarven warrior with a sword and shield who sided with the templars, with Grand Duke Gaspard, and didn't trust Abelas. Romanced Cassandra and completed quests, hating the Qun and declaring Solas to be beyond redemption and must be killed.

My canon is usually my first playthrough character, which means it`s always a diplomatic female human (i`m boring i know ) and usually a mage (except in DAO where i have two canons, one that is a warrior and the other one is a mage), for romances i always chose the ones i liked the most and not based on plot relevance.

I too have been considering my current canon after DA4's announcement. There's a lot that's going to stay up in the air for Inquisition until I know more about DA4's protagonist (inquisitor or new protagonist, race selection available or not). All I can say for certain about my inquisitor is that they'll be non human, and most likely female. That said, I'm fairly comfortable with my current warden and Hawke.
My warden is Durin Aeducan, a lawful neutral warrior who uses his time with the wardens to atone for murdering his brother. As such in general he makes all the "good" choices, like convincing Zathrian to cure the werewolves and arranging a political marriage between Alistair and Anora for the sake of preventing civil war. He does name Bhelen king despite his betrayal, believing Bhelen to be best for Orzammar despite his ruthlessness. There's a tad bit of self loathing that prevents him from acknowledging Bhelen's part in Trian's death as well. At the final battle Durin does the ultimate sacrifice, fulfilling his original sentence to kill darkspawn until they kill him, and able to return to his homeland and the Stone for burial.
For Awakening I headcanon Stroud to be the Orlesian warden just to give the guy a little more relevance and since the Orlesian warden isn't recognized by the games anyway. He recruits all possible companions and leaves the Architect alive, also able to save both Amaranthine and the Keep.
Marian Hawke (default appearance) is a neutral good snarky mage. She's moderate conservative in regard to the circle system. To her it's necessary as an educational institution as well as a safe haven for mages coming from magic-fearing towns and families. That said, she does view Kirkwall's templars as out of control, especially by the end of the game, and stands with the mages against them. If Hawke was the Inquisitor she'd likely support Cassandra for Divine. She hates the Qun, but still tries to keep the peace between the Qunari and the rest of Kirkwall. Isabela was her LI. Carver became a grey warden. She's on good terms with all companions, though she ended up killing Anders. She'll survive Inquisition and return to Kirkwall and her merry band of misfits.

After going for an ultimate sacrifice playthrough myself I decided to adopt it into my own game.

I'm looking forward to defiling the Ashes as my current "canon" Warden - I think it makes the events of DAI even more interesting. Alistair (in PTs where he's a Warden) says that a Warden who went through with Morrigan's ritual "walks a dark path"... and ofc, if the Warden deliberately tainted Andraste's mortal remains for power!!1, did the Maker send Corypheus and co. to the Conclave, and Divine Justinia and thousands of others to their deaths, as some form of divine retribution? Does Leliana know? (After all, to avoid killing her you can lie to her about the Ashes. But I wouldn't be surprised if she found out anyway and blames him). He's also going to sacrifice Isolde to save Connor - he's going to save Connor and not let the demon have him, as he's a big believer in freedom and seizing your destiny, not being controlled by hungry desire demons. JUICY, JUICY DRAMA. (Plus I think he'll be a nice contrast to my Hawke and Adaar, who are wholly unmotivated by personal power or magical experimentation.) copper did you recently change your canon Hawke or am I imagining things?

vertigomez yeah I switched things up with my Hawke. Previously my canon was a snarky male mage who romances Fenris. I still like that character and his dynamic with Fenris, but I'm coming to appreciate female Hawke's voice acting more and more. And out of the DA2 romance options, Isabela is who would appeal to me personally the most. Who knows though, by the time DA4 comes out I may decide to change things up again.

I bought this print of female Hawke to hang on my wall, and ever since then Marian (and Isabela) have been vying for top spot over my Garrett/Fenris playthrough! It doesn't help that I think Isabela/Hawke is one of the best f/f romances in gaming, or that I appreciate Isabela's connection to the Qunari (in her past and the events of DA2). And I just love default female Hawke's design. 😍

I may be finally choosing my DAI canon character. At the moment I'm thinking of my Melisandre character. She's the first character in any game that I've played more than once with, this is the second play through with her. We'll see how this current play through goes.

She's a Dalish mage elf who's people are a faction that believes in the Maker, who they call, the Lord of Light. She's a religious zealot who loves fire and likes to play the game of politics. In my first game with her, she was borderline crazy, but this game, we'll see.

I love your character's design though, I wonder...wouldn't Sylaise's vallaslin make more sense for her? given the whole 'taught the Elves how to use fire' thing? (unless of course you think the Sylaise vallaslin is ugly, in that case, disregard my comment )

(unless of course you think the Sylaise vallaslin is ugly, in that case, disregard my comment ) I never gave it much thought. I chose Falon'Di's vallaslin because I seldom used it in my other elf characters. The full Sylaise vallasin doesn't look bad.

ah I see I suppose Falon'din's vallaslin also makes sense, given Mellisandre's (GoT version anyway) raising people from the dead thing (I've personally never watched Game of Thrones, so I'm not very familiar with the characters aside from the things I've read across the internet, and the sparingly parts I've watched on youtube)

Yeah Felon'din is the god of death and Mel has no problem killing especially if its death or sacrifice by fire.

The night is dark and full of terrors, old man, but the fire burns them all away.I'll probably have her chose the Necromancer specialization in my current game. Last game was a Rift Mage.
Had to go look up one of my old posts in What you Did Today in DA? This is what a religious nut she is.
"My clan, being devote Andrastians, you may think we would hold a grudge against the Imperium for what they did to Andraste? Not at all. It had to happen. The Maker is a being of purity, the Light. If He is to have a bride, she would have to be pure as well. Mortals are unclean, physically, mentally and spiritually, full of sin. The best form of purification is fire. It burns away the filth and sin from the body, making the soul pure to be in the Maker's presence. When the Imperium sent Andraste to the flame, it made her pure, thus she was worthy to be the Maker's bride."
Images of my first play through with Mel. Wish that elven armor mod was compatible with Trespasser, it looks so awesome with the reds and oranges.

With the recent announcement, I came by to check out the refreshed thread. I posted earlier this year, but some things have changed in my plans.
The basic choice and construction process remains the same: race interactions, romances, particular roleplay scenarios, class synergies, story beats, and sometimes the popularity or lack thereof of something, all inform how I develop my canon characters and world state. So, without further ado...
DA:O Kind-hearted and somewhat naive, my exiled dwarf princess feels abandoned by the Stone. The little goody two-shoes helps everyone and is quick to offer mercy and second chances. With her growing relationship with Leliana, and the wondrous things she witnesses and experiences on the Quest for the Sacred Ashes, Aeducan converts to Andrastianism. So yes, she helps Brother Burkel. She is an archer rogue, primarily focusing on her interest in animal companions (Great Bear, ultimately).
DA2 My confrontational and direct Hawke feels the crushing weight of hardship. Above all else, he is brutally dedicated to protecting his family. He finds common ground (and some romance) with Fenris early on, but they drift apart as time goes on. While a self-proclaimed Atheist, he takes Merrill under his wing in the second act, and doesn't disrespect her beliefs. Hawke even forms a lasting relationship with her (Rivalry romance). Act Three finds Hawke zealously looking out for his Grey Warden sister (hey, she still appears in 3 or 4 of my main quests), his Guard-Captain best friend, and his Dalish lover. He mostly uses daggers, but sometimes a bow in a melee-heavy party, as a dedicated Shadow rogue.
DA:I My witty and charming, but under-handed, Carta member cannot believe the Inquisition wants her as their leader and figurehead. My Cadash has no regrets with her past life, and certainly makes no claim to this Herald nonsense, but she prefers order, and she enjoys the influence she gains. This Carta dwarf is a superb saleswoman, but if any clients or their employees try to use violent negotiating tactics, she has a two-handed battleaxe to answer them (I know, how cliche. I did have an archer first though). She felt drawn to rugged and bearded Blackwall, but gave up on his "unworthiness" after finding the badge. Which is fine, because then she gets to Ride the Bull off into the sunset. Cadash and Bull make a great couple. While Templar is my favorite, Cadash's lack of faith steered me away from that path. So, she tanks as a Magical Champion instead.
EDIT: For proofreading. And I just noticed that all but one of my Bioware characters has multiple romances in their games (Shepard goes Kaidan to Garrus, and my Ryder is polyamorous). The stories they tell are just fine, but I may decide to drop Blackwall in the end to offset this trend.
