Discussion thread for the Gears series, and hype for Gears 4. Gears of War has been my favorite shooter on the Xbox ever since the original in 2006 (even if I was terrible at it when it was new). Starting with the release of Gears of War 2, I've pre-ordered the collector's editions of each game in the series sans Judgment. Truly, I think it is one of the best game series I have ever played, again sans Judgment. Gears 4 is shaping up to be incredible just based on the pre-release gameplay footage, the multiplayer beta, and the trailers. I've always enjoyed the storylines for Gears. It gets wrongly labeled as a super macho bro-dude game, but it could not be farther from the truth. There are a lot of legitimately mature themes in the series (both in the games and the expanded universe novels and comics) and it can be highly emotional in spite of the heavily stylized and action-packed gameplay. The scene where Dom finds his wife is one of the most powerful moments I've ever seen in a video game, and that happened all the way in 2008 with Gears 2.
Anyway, that's just what I think.

I love Gears, it has one of the funniest lines in gaming history.
I remember when I first heard this I didn't laugh immediately, but after five minutes and pondering it over I started cracking up hysterically.

Also, GoW4 is 'Play Anywhere', so us mustards can play it (on Win 10 PCs). Even though it most certainly requires XB controller and active XBL account for multiplayer, so most of us are disqualified right there, it's step in the right direction.

I just hope its PC launch is smoother than that for Gears of War Ultimate Edition.

I remember picking the original GoW1 for PC alongside the Crysis expansion (remember they were called expansions back in the day). I ended up really liking the game, of course it was a pain in the ass with that stupid Games for Windows account and all that BS, but the game was pretty fun and gorey. And then they decided the franchise was too good to be on PC. Heard horrendous things about the Ultimate Edition on PC, and now they are shoveling GoW 4 on PC "Win10 exclusive" because lols. And then there's the fact that Gows 2,3 and Judgement are nowhere to be found on PC so... MS really needs to put their shit together. If you're gonna put the franchise back on PC then put the entire franchise, not half of it .

G2 is 8 years old and is pretty much dead even on console, and Judgment was stillborn on release, averaging 500 or less players less than 1 week after it came out, it's that bad of a game. So that's 2 of 4 games that would be a waste of time to port over. They could do Gears 3, but they're already busy with Gears 4, which will have cross-platform play and once you buy it for platform A, you also own it for platform B

They did remaster the first one aka Ultimate ed. after all (as terrible of a port as it was). I appreciate the fact that they are trying to bring the franchise back on PC, but it makes little sense story wise imho. Ofc if the premise is "just enjoy the graphics 4k and/or the multiplayer and don't mind the story" then it works just fine I guess.

They remastered the first one because the first one was literally the game that put the series on the map for people, not to mention it already had existing PC code unlike 2/3/Judgment. It's both iconic and had a pre-existing PC base. Also, Gears of War 4 has playable prologue sections that provide backstory coupled with narrative exposition.

Speaking of the story, what's the general premise for Gears 4? I haven't really been following the series since the end of GoW 3 so I guess you could say that I'm a little out of the loop. Apart from the odd trailer that I saw as an ad for a video I was watching I know next to nothing about the time period of the new game nor how the factions go.
I did see the protagonist fighting something that looked an awful lot like the Locust, but I thought they were all wiped out in Gears 3. Or are these the "new" Not-Locust bad guys?

Or are these the "new" Not-Locust bad guys? 4 takes place 25 years after 3, and the Imulsion Countermeasure developed by Adam Fenix fucks up Sera's ecosystems, causing incredibly bad weather storms known as windflares (tornadoes charged with fire and lightning). You play as Marcus' son JD Fenix, who joins the rebuilt COG as a Gear but goes AWOL for reasons not revealed. JD and his buddy Del are doing.... Something, I dont know what leads to it, but they join up with a group of people who live outside the COG, basically Stranded. According to the launch trailer, the Swarm (the new enemy) kill and kidnap the villagers who live with JD, and it seems the COG doesn't know about the Swarm, since JD and co. are the ones who officially discover them. Whether the Swarm are related to Locust or not, I have no idea. The whole campaign takes place over a single 24-hour day, with the exception of the prologue, which is a combination of segments taken from Sera's past (namely the Pendulum Wars, E-Day, and the siege of Anvil Gate during Gears 3)

I literally have no idea who any of those people are... The only Fenix I recognize is Marcus from the first game. What happened to the Locust? I know we (spoilers about GoW 1 ending) killed their general at the end of the first game This creatures look an awful lot like Locust to me. They're called "swarm" now? Wikipedia is definitely going to be my ally if I ever decide to play GoW 4 on PC...

Wikipedia is definitely going to be my ally if I ever decide to play GoW 4 on PC... The Locust as we know them from Gears 1-3 are all dead, killed by Adam Fenix's Imulsion Countermeasure machine. Adam Fenix is Marcus' dad, and the one who created the Hammer of Dawn for the COG after the blueprints were stolen by the United Independent Republics during the battle of Aspho Fields (Carmine references the battle in Gears 1, Marcus and Dom both fought there) in the Pendulum Wars. Before E-Day, Adam made contact with the Locust queen, Myrrah, and promised to aid them in surviving the Lambent invasion of the Hollows where the Locust live. If you remember from Gears 1, theLambent are creatures infected by Imulsion, which is shown in Gears 3 to be a parasitic lifeform. People infected by Imulsion poisoning contract a disease known as Rustlung (coughing up blood and mucus, becoming physically weak, then turning Lambent), and this was happening to the Locust, so Myrrah reached out to Adam Fenix for help. Adam ultimately failed to come up with anything, and in this time Myrrah was aware of what humanity was doing to themselves during the Pendulum Wars. Her awareness, coupled with desperation to save her people from the Lambent, made her decide to invade the surface, AKA E-Day. Shortly after E-Day, Adam Fenix was working at his estate at East Barricade Academy and the area became under siege by the Locust, and Marcus was tasked with rescuing his father. Marcus fails, gets court marshaled and sent to prison, and Adam is presumed to be dead. In reality, Adam did not die, he was kidnapped by the Onyx Guard (the COG's elite personal guard who watch over the COG's chairman) and brought to the island of Azura, which was fortified by Chairman Prescott to be a safe haven for the COG elite after the Locust invaded. Here at Azura, Adam developed his Imulsion Countermeasure after he discovered that the Imulsion was the reason why the Locust were lashing out. During the events of Gears 3, both human and Locust society is in complete collapse, with Jacinto being sunk into the ocean and the Locust hollows completely flooded. As well, the Lambent have risen up and are now actively fighting both the humans and the Locust. Marcus and Delta are given a data disk by Prescott that contains a message from Adam Fenix, and over the course of the game find where he is and meet with him on Azura. Marcus and co. arrive to find Azura under siege from the Locust with most of the COG personnel dead, as the Locust intend to make Azura their new home since the Hollows are flooded and the Lambent control pretty much everywhere else on the surface. Marcus and Delta manage to rescued Adam Fenix, and during their battle with Queen Myrrah, Adam deploys his Imulsion Countermeasure machine, which encircles the planet of Sera with energy pulses that destroy Imulsion, both found normally throughout the world and in infected cell tissue, killing off the Lambent, the Locust (who are all latently infected because they all lived underground near raw Imulsion deposits) except for Queen Myrrah, and himself (he injected himself with Imulsion to test its effects on living tissue, and was thus infected). Marcus and the rest of Delta and the non-infected humans survive and begin to rebuild. Between the time of Gears 3 and 4, Marcus marries Anya, starts a farm, and has a son, JD, who is the main playable character in Gears 4. The COG re-rises to power and becomes the predominant form of human government. Meanwhile, the Swarm, who may or may not be related to the Locust, but I'm guessing they are since they seem so similar, begin killing and kidnapping humans from villages outside COG territory, and so begins Gears 4. There's much, much more, but this is the best TLDR version that I could come up with. I know a LOT about the Gears lore and universe.

I've always had questions about them, but the games never seemed to answer anything. For instance: Why does the Locust Queen look human? Were the Locust the native intelligent species on Sera before humanity arrived and forced them underground? Are the Locust a hive mind, and if not why aren't there any separate factions, specifically Locust that would be willing to try and negotiate with humanity? Etc.

Etc. The Locust are an anomaly to me. There are a LOT of questions (yours are actually quite common), but surprisingly few concrete answers. There's no hard reason for why the queen looks human. Some theories, but no confirmation. There is one common theory about the Locust, that they were engineered in secret by humans (specifically the COG) and forced underground, where they built their civilization in the depths of the Hollows. Tbh I don't buy into this theory because that would make the Locust, collectively, less than a century old and does not even remotely explain how they could have built up such a vast infrastructure of buildings, supply lines, and even a religion during such a short time. I think the Locust are another native Seran species who just lived underground and, before Myrrah, didn't make contact with humans. Whether or not the Llcust are a hive mind is tough to say. The Queen is undisputedly the ruler and leader and all Locust serve her unerringly and will die for her, but Locust who are cut off from the queen go feral and become little more than savage animals (there's a schism between the loyalist Locust and the savage Locust in Gears 3, you fight them both). As well, there are individuals within the Locust horde who have defined personality traits and names, like General RAAM, Skorge, and General Karn, while the standard drones are unintelligent when not led by somebody and only ever seem to act like violent animals. So... I dunno.

[...] There's much, much more, but this is the best TLDR version that I could come up with. I know a LOT about the Gears lore and universe. Thanks. I barely remember some things about Gears 1, and they didn't explained a ton in the first game anyways. And, it was a long time since I last played, even when I played the game quite a lot actually, I think I never fully understood the story. For instance, I knew Marcus faced court, but I didn't know why. And I most definitely didn't know they had contact with the Locust queen. Don't know anything about the war/s previous to the Locust either. Was that explained in the fist game or just mentioned?

Don't know anything about the war/s previous to the Locust either. Was that explained in the fist game or just mentioned? Yeah, the first game AFAIK wasn't expected to be as successful as it was, so they didn't do a lot of world building beyond what was necessary just for that game, which explains the lack of backstory in Gears 1. "Officially", E-Day was the first time humanity made contact with the Locust. Off the record, Adam Fenix was approached by Myrrah and offered to help the Locust like how I described up above. Also, Marcus' mother Elaine Fenix happened upon them too, completely by accident. Elaine was a renowned biologist and was studying small subterranean animals known as rock shrews, and her studies led her to a cave opening that she ventured into, and she never came back. She died in the Hollows at the hands of the Locust, and neither Adam nor Marcus ever knew about it. Also, there are fairy tales told by parents on Sera to their children about boogeymen who come from beneath the ground and snatch away unruly children, implied to be the Locust. So the people of Sera have history with the Locust, they just didn't know that they were Locust. Prior to the war with the Locust, humanity had been fighting the Pendulum Wars. Prior to that, humanity had been suffering a crisis because of a shortage of traditional fossil fuels, and the discovery of Imulsion led to it being refined and used as an alternative. Thus, countries more rich with Imulsion (like those in the COG) became more powerful and influential than those who lacked it, and the countries with little Imulsion came together to form the United Independent Republics, or UIR. The UIR declared war on the countries who would be come the COG, which marked the beginning of the Pendulum Wars. The whole war would last 79 years in a stalemate up until the battle of Aspho Fields, where the COG stole blueprints for the Hammer of Dawn from a UIR research center. There was around a month of relative peace and stability from the end of the Pendulum Wars and E-Day, so all in all humanity has been more or less in never ending conflict for 96 years.

i still have first game, but i'm curious. should i play it? I would say yes, doubly so if you have the remastered Ultimate Edition. The gameplay is super solid and holds up nicely after 10 years, but there are some bugs and glitches that can make the multiplayer frustrating and since it is a 10-year old game by this point, the gameplay does show its age and it's lacking some of the refinements and polish that the later games have. The game is VERY violent and gory, and loaded to the brim with swear words, if those things bother you. It's one of the game that helped to popularize the third-person shooter of the modern era in gaming, if that helps to give an idea of how it might be. Gears of War 2 and 3 are better than the first, but the first is by no means bad, I would give it 8/10. There's not much in the way of story or plot though, that all came about with Gears of War 2 and the expanded universe that released with 2.

I guess the first Gears of War appealed to me but I never really got into the series at the same time.

If you're playing on consoles, most definitely. The remastered version is scaled up to 1080p and given a graphical overhaul, and the campaign includes a bonus level that was formerly PC-exclusive. The multiplayer is similarly scaled up and runs at 60 frames per second, making the MP very responsive and smooth. The campaign is locked to 30 FPS. Visually, I'd say it's one of the best looking games on the XB1.
