I have just discovered this RPG (still in development) and it caught immediately my attention. From the official website: "Disco Elysium is a groundbreaking blend of isometric RPG and hardboiled cop show. Solve a massive, open ended case in a unique urban fantasy setting. Kick in doors, interrogate suspects, or just get lost exploring the gorgeously rendered city of Revachol and unraveling its mysteries. Tough choices need to be made. What kind of cop you are — is up to you."What do you think?

Intriguing concept...
Not sure if it will work in an isometric kind of way, I see this maybe panning out as a L.A Noire/Phoenix Wright sort of narrative.
Could work though...be keeping an eye on this.
Turns out we have some info on it already, used to go under a different name but the artistry in the game is damn impressive.

Always interested in games that allow you to play the hard boiled cop or private detective but they all kind of fall flat, never really about you solving a crime making decisions based on your own interpretation of the evidence but rather following a linear breadcrumb trail left by the developers where the protagonist of the game figures stuff out on their own without player input.
LA Noire was especially disappointing as for all the pretense of getting the player to figure out whether the suspect is lying none of it really matters as it all works out the same in the end, first mission I ever played first thing I did was see how badly I could fuck up the case and whether or not it actually effects anything and sure enough everything turns out the same, Cole finds the perp and solves the case without any help from the player. To make things even more insulting on the missions where you are given a choice between suspects the evidence is so deliberately flimsy that either suspect could theoretically be the perp yet you don't have enough evidence to realistically convict either one of them, then later on a few missions later the game just goes "LOL all the suspects you convicted did not do it, here is the real killer lol" and you can't help but wonder why the game forced you to convict a suspect in the first place?
That said hopefully this game does not suck like LA Noire and actually emphasizes the detective angle.

That said hopefully this game does not suck like LA Noire and actually emphasizes the detective angle. I am quite confident that the game design (isometric old-school-inspired RPG) leaves plenty of room for a lot of freedom. If we add to the mix the open world style, the multiple inventory system and the several skills customization I think we can also hope for a lot of in-game options, not only for our character but also for the story/quests/subquests. urns out we have some info on it already, used to go under a different name but the artistry in the game is damn impressive. Yeah this game was previously known as "No Truce With The Furies" but at some point they changed the title. I like the new one more.

Looks interesting. Definitely gonna keep an eye out for it.
I've played some of those old text-only mystery games where you try to solve a case, and get different endings depending on how well you handled it. Wonder if it'll be anything like that?

This bit of news significantly increased my interest in the game. To recap: - The world is about the size of Planescape: Torment.
- None of these areas reuse assets or look the same like games that are asset-assembled do.
- There are four major weather states — snow, rain, mist, and clear.
- Disco Elysium has about 100 "quests".
- Takes place in one city district divided into five major areas. All four non-underground areas are seamless, isometric open world.
- You have about 100 inventory items to mix and match from, and over 50 thoughts to choose from.
- 40 original pieces of music and some 6 different psychoactive substances to get you high as you do so (not included in the box, I presume).
- There are 24 skills. The least used comes up about 50 times, the most used around 500.
- There are 50 characters, all with partial VO.
- Circa 90 hours of playtime for a completionist, some 30 hours for a rushed playthrough, and 60+ hours on average.
I posted the new trailer on the news thread, but in case you haven't seen it here it is again:

It looks good and right up my alley. But I think I'll wait to hear what people think after playing it. Good trailer, but I always get really skeptical when they list all the things you can do: Ooh consequences, ooh open world. Sure most of these things might be good, but I'll wait to see before I buy it!

Damn, I somehow missed to notice that the companions in this game are your multiple personality traits/skills. How awesome is that?!?! Definitely going to buy now. I just hope my poor memory won't turn all the reading and remembering an ordeal... Could be I like the game's idea more than it's fun to play. Currently playing Tides Of Numenera and I'm not sure it's exactly fun. Lots of very cool conversations but gosh it's exhausting doing nothing but reading for hours...

I saw some video of the first hour and it looks real good. I'm a fan of Bukowski, so playing a washed up alcoholic doesn't bother me and there's a lot of humor in the game it seems. Also disco.
And I saw a couple of pop culture reference, there's a paper called "Trompe le Monde" and it's the title of an album made by the Pixies, album I really enjoy. So yeah...I'm ready for this!
More seriously the gameplay, and it's mostly dialogue based seems real fun...also playing a looser seems fun because you can RP real pathetic at times "Please Luv Me, i'm so alone" style, or you can have the strange sense of being the best thing ever. Gonna enjoy rping a I'm trash but also frankly wonderful playthrough.
Anyway I'm excited!

So, we played this game for 5 hours last night, talking over the headset about our WILDLY different outcomes based on our individual skill sets. We're having a blast with this deadbeat alcoholic! Although I have to say I seem to have chosen a poor combination of skills. Boyfriend chose a highly intelligent but loud smoking macho with delusions of grandeur. His special perk is drama. This seems to be a super fun build! He hits on all women, is so gross and has no shame. But because he's smart he can trip people up in their contradictions, make them really sweat. I chose something very different: 2 intellect 5 psyche 1 physique 3 motorics I didn't want to play the stereotype of a highly intelligent socially inept empath. Nor the sociopath offshoot of that. So I made him emotionally smart but overall quite stupid. I was hoping high psyche would make up for low intelligence but nope! So far all this does for my character is make him aware of who's nervous or sad or scared but I'm unable to make use of that info. Apparently I'm too stupid for that! His conscience tells him all the time not to push touchy subjects, lol. That's not very helpful! My character is this painfully inept suicidal poor sod who just wants to fade away. His psyche skills make him aware of everyone's poor opinion of him but he's too weak and cowardly and stupid to do anything about it. It's... an experience... *g*
Right at the start when he's still unconscious, I went for the suicide answer frequently. He REALLY wanted to died. I'm not sure if you can fail the game right there. I think I snapped out of it at the last moment? Didn't dare go for it one more time at some point. But you can keep going for quite a while... Boyfriend told the voice to fuck off, hahaha.
The idea was to play a character who has cracked under his empathy and the inability to cope with the shitty depressing world around him. So he started drinking himself to death, escaping more and more into a fantasy world until he completely loses touch with reality. The perk makes him see mysteries and conspiracies everywhere. But it's not as fun as I had hoped so far. But maybe this will change.
I don't recommend this build though. It's just painful and not particular fun to take all the mockery without calling people out on it. But let's see if I can make use of all this self pity. Get people to help him because he's such a mess and doesn't seem like a threat.
The reactivity of this game is off the charts and it may be one of the rare games that I replay. Maybe several times. I HIGHLY recommend it to everyone who enjoys a very politically incorrect game roleplaying one of the saddest protagonists I've ever come across. This is something very different from the usual hero trope. We love it!

That said hopefully this game does not suck like LA Noire and actually emphasizes the detective angle. In that case, play Blade Runner. It may be dated but it basically allows exactly what you ask for. It's pretty much the only game I know where there is not pre-determined truth but the truth depends on what you see, how you interpret it and how you react. This goes so far that by the end your own character may turn out to be a replicant, a sympathizer or a cold hearted killer, all depending on how you judged the cases you have to work throughout the game.
It was brilliant.
And it's now supported by ScummVM, so it's easy to play again. Maybe a little hard to find these days but google should help you there.

Finished the game and it was one of the best game I've played in a while. There are some flaws here and there obviously, not a lot of bug at all but I did stumble on one that made the main quest impossible...twas unpleasant. There's a couple of minor design flaws too, but for a first game, it's totally impressive.
It's just the type of game that is an "experience" and depending on type of spe you get you can see the game differently. It's a game that mostly happen in dialogues, although the art style is great and there's some "action" scene that are absolutly hilarious or sad. There's a lot of humor and sadness and there's a lot of mocking current politics system from left to right. I may have turned my detective into a hardcore communist with a Fuck the World jacket on....also may have break stuff screaming Fuck the System and Fuck the Police...good thing you have a npc cop partner who is fabulous in his never raise much of an eyebrow attitude. It's a really well written game overall.
And there's a lot of freedom of rping...from boring sorry cop who want to turn his life around to crazy mofo onto crazy theories who just wants his life to get worse. There's also a lot of under the hood, game checks giving you different options, it all depends on skills and things you did said and perks you take. I tried to restart the game and had a quest to talk to some girl who secretly like a guy you interacted with...first playthrough I picked on that and was able to make a normal matchmaking. Second playthrough I picked on that as well but through some weird 6th sense, didn't told this to the girl, got into my head I was detective "Love", and went to talk to the guy. I thought it would be the same just slightly different way to get the mini quest. Oh boy. What the "Love" detective got was the girl loved to ride the "c**k carousel" so I ended up calmly explaining to the guy, she was a huge hoe and depressed him. On the bright side he offered me a wine bottle.

Dealing with the corpse after it's down from the tree with high(ish) empathy and inland empire is an experience. I've never had any compunctions with killing in a game, it's whatever, but I don't want to hurt people after that. It's amazing. Lurid, vivid, traumatizing, human.

It is pretentious as fuck and a bit self-indulgent with its writing, but it is a damn good RPG that I recommend.

Caved and bought it...grrrr... But the streamed gameplay looked too interesting and I had time this weekend. So...much...reading...
Started with 5 Int, 4 Psy, 2 Motorics and 1 Phys. And honestly, I put more points in Motorics and Physical thus far than in anything else The Mental options just didn't offer me solutions to progress. Maybe if I pump more at them, I don't know... But even 6+ scores didn't manage to overcome some quest objectives where 3 or 4 Motorics/Phys had no issue. And failing those 93% chances...Xcom PTSD relapse But then succeeding at 14% and feeling like a champ.
I pumped up Perception (hate to miss all the loot!), but that led to so many side notices during dialogues stating "you see a cat, you hear a baby... look, a seagull!!!". "Empathy" is such a bully, always fighting with the other senses Not sure if Logic is any useful, I pumped it to 8, but see no benefits yet, except that it likes to chime in and state "Well, what this guy says is...logical." "Logic"? More like "Obvious". And dammit, "Drama", stop making me look like an idiot I failed that karaoke even with 95% chance, screw you!
I feel great replay value in here. Maybe next one will be maxed Phys/Motorics, just to bulldoze through everything
Oh, and I didn't quite get the "Mind palace" mechanics at first, so I screwed up a bit. "Encyclopedia" dropped to 3 as a result. Which actually might be an improvement to be honest. It stopped dominating everything in a conversation
